However how many of the last three had climbed back up to the #2/#3 because of a performance on the X-Factor Final? Definitely Gaga and probably Beyonce, not too sure about Rihanna but I know she did perform on it.

Interesting to see what would have been the Christmas Number 1 since 2005 in a parallel, X-Factor-less universe:

 

2005: THE JCB SONG, Nizlopi

2006: PATIENCE, Take That

2007: WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, Eva Cassidy / Katie Melua

2008: IF I WERE A BOY, Beyonce

2009: BAD ROMANCE, Lady Gaga

2010: WHAT'S MY NAME, Rihanna / Drake

 

You can't assume a universe without X Factor would have exactly the same charts minus XF-related entries. There are many other factors in play.

pretty sure without X Factor none of last years top 3 would've been there except maybe Rihanna, Surfin Bird certainly wouldn't have been there

I don't mind the song but honestly, this is the third year running and I think they should just GIVE IT UP. Oh boo hoo, The X Factor winner has the Christmas #1 again - is it really that big a deal to the haters? I don't really get why they care so much. We can't exactly like every #1. Doubt it'll work either, it worked once and I don't see the success ever being repeated again.

Actually, disregard that, it seems like the XF single really IS released the week before Xmas. Apparently they've already booked Wembley Stadium for the final on the 11th of December, so unless the release of the single is delayed by the week... :o

 

So the XF winner will definitely enter the chart at #1, but it shouldn't be TOO hard for Nirvana to beat them for the Christmas slot after all!

That would make more sense, raise sales at a dead time...sales are big in December anyway!

No no2 behind Band Aid in 1984, also Frankie goes to Hollywood - Power of Love was no1 at the start of December, most consider it a xmas classic.

 

Wham - Last Christmas is the biggest selling no2 of all time - i think on first week sales and overall sales for no2 as well - impressive!

I really like Smells Like Teen Spirit, for that reason I'd be pleased if it got to #1 and it would be a nice tribute as well to the legend that was Kurt Cobain.

i would choose 'F*** you' by Lily Allen, she deserves that number 1 hit plus this song is a huge statement and is very anti-establishment....
