I assume that everyone will be suprised by this result. And im sure most of you will hate it lol. But the BEPs have it. And they have it by quite a large margin to. Its gonna take a massive song with huge longevity to beat this.

2 - Kings of Leon - Sex on fire - 129,693

1 - Black eyed peas - I got a feeling - 147,171

As far as I was aware, the weekly breakdown of these figures is not available, if you know where I can get it from, please let me know.

Music Week has posted a weekly Top 50 since November 1991, but I think they only started to include the audience and play figures some time in 1995. I have copies of most Music Week magazines from 1998 onwards and some from before that, but I don't know anywhere you can get the figues from online.

Now that's a good result. Out of the top 4, easily the best one. The other 3 are just too overplayed (ha ha!). But IGF is a very worthy winner, although I'm very surprised at the winning margin, it wasn't even close in the end.

Thanks for doing this Dannyboy, very interesting. :D

I do not like this indeed. But the other 2 songs in the top3 are horrific alternatives so I guess it don't matter.

Thanks so much for doing this, was an interesting countdown. I do feel kind of ''sad'' over the amount of recent songs to be so unbelievably high. They certainly do seem to have an advantage.

Interesting list, by the way. Having done the YTD Airplay charts for the last few years, I can't say that I'm that surprised by the top spot.

well, none would've been a surprise winner tbh - I Gotta Feeling and Sex on Fire have really been murdered by overplay, I still like them, but I'd rarely listen to them out of choice these days

Thank you very much for doing this Dannyboy, has been a very interesting read and you clearly put a lot of effort into this :D

Funny how the songs get worse and worse as you get to the top. That said, I Gotta Feeling is pretty good considering.

I know I whine a lot about how certain songs get so overplayed, but it really, really is too much. And judging by this list, the overplaying of boring old-fashioned songs has become worse over time (I assumed it was just me having been a bit more carefree in the past). I think pretty much all the songs in the top 10 could've been released in the 80's. But that said, the songs that are played on the radio do need to appeal to older people as well as younger people.

Also, the longevity in the charts of songs like Sex on Fire and I Gotta Feeling isn't very impressive at all when they get this much promotion. No wonder!

Yuck, don't like the winner anywhere near as much as the #2. The mark of a great song for me is one that survives overexposure and is still enjoyable to listen to years later. "Sex On Fire" manages that far better than "I Gotta Feeling" for me, but I guess I'm in the minority. IGF (along with "Judas" actually) I actually thought was a joke the first time I heard it. It has grown on me, but not much.

But even if their chart longevity isn't 'impressive', their radio longevity still is - the 'impressiveness' is just transferred from one chart to another, it's still just as impressive

Probably should have seen IGF coming. The most overplayed song ever. It was fairly boring to start with but at the peak of its overplay the entertainment value it provided was actually in MINUS FIGURES. (It doesn't sound that bad any more though since radio have stopped playing it so much).

Good to see Sex On Fire in the top 2.

^ I still hear I Gotta Feeling all the time on the radio. :( Although I think it's pretty good compared to all the other overplayed songs (e.g. Chasing Cars, Sex on Fire, etc.). But for a song to be overplayed, it has to be, by definition, uncontroversial and quite generic really, which I think easily describes all the songs in the top 10.

Also, I heard people on here say that earlier on in the decade the charts moved very fast, like you'd get 10 new entries in the top 40 each week. Since a lot of radio stations are a bit influenced by the charts, the fact that they move so slowly now probably means they don't change their playlist that much. Back then, with a dozen "new" songs every week, I think the radio stations would probably be swapping around the songs they rotate a lot more.

'F**k You!' is uncontroversial?

Yes. I bet a lot of the general public don't even know there's an explicit version. I remember at school all the 11 year-old running around going "OMG. Have you heard this song. It's so good. It's called f*** You! Haha! LMAO". It's the perfect release strategy really. Throw in a swear words so all the children buy it, then make the song sound like something from 50 years ago so all the adults like it and the MOR stations (the stations that play the same songs again and again for years) play it.

And, sonically, it's probably one of the least controversial songs of 2010.

I'm surprised at how low Empire State of Mind was.

I already have the update ready for tomorrow at 5pm. This will bring us up to date. Ill will update it every wednesday at 5pm.
I didn't find "Round and Round" by Sugababes..It was No.1 in Uk Music Charts. I saw that "Freak Like Me" is very popular in radio but "Round and Round"..?
