This was the historic week when Bryan Adams spent his record breaking sixteenth consecutive week at the top. The highest new entry was from Vic Reeves and the Stourbridge rock band The Wonder Stuff (who up until this point had only a few moderate hits, the biggest "The Size Of A Cow" climbing to #5 back in March of this year). Many they would be a cert to climb to #1 the following week, but in the end they were usurped by what is easily U2's best single of the 1990s, "The Fly" and had to wait a fortnight to get the #1.

M People make their chart debut at 61 with "How Can I Love You More" which went on to become their first Top 40 hit (#29 in December) and eventually a Top 10 hit (#8) on re-release in early '93.

And, oh look - at #14 - it's Dannii Minogue with a terrible cover!

Oh but how gorgeous was that House of Love track.

Just goes to show that the charts never ever meant jack shit.

I've never understood how House Of Love were not massive. With songs like Christine, Shine On and Beatles and the Stones they should have been hugely successful.

But we're talking about a musical climate where Bryan Adams was celebrating 16 weeks at #1 so I'm not surprised at all.

I mean look at that Top 10. It is crap which ever way you look at it.

The Stuffies with a crappy cover being their biggest hit was the only high point.

  • 2 weeks later...

Have to take issue with you suggesting the Stuffies had only had moderate hits until then - for an indie band to hit the top 10, as they did with 'Size of a Cow', back in 1991 was massive. Just because 'indie' went mainstream in the late 90s and the top 10 became clogged up with Britpop, it doesn't mean this wasn't a huge achievement.

1991 was a golden year for indie music, I've always said so...and look at the following in the Top 75 - nice!

06. (NE) DIZZY Vic Reeves And The Wonder Stuff

Ok, so the Stuffies may not have gone any higher had it not been for the vocals of Mr Reeves but wasn't it great to have a novelty hit that was actually pretty good - and a cover that really beefed up the original.

16. (NE) AFTER THE WATERSHED Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine

I'm pretty sure this chart comes from the infamous day when Carter guitarist Fruitbat rugby-tackled Pip Schofield live on BBC. This was Carter's breakthrough single after their re-released classic 'Sheriff Fatman' had snaked around the top 30 for a few weeks in the summer. It almost went on to reach the top 10, a feat they'd achieve with 'The Only Living Boy in New Cross' the following year.

I shall be watching them live again in less than 3 weeks!

58. (NE) GIRL WITH THE LONELIEST EYES House Of Love

Guy Chadwick and co. always seemed to be also-rans - I much prefer 'Shine On' and (especially) 'Destroy the Heart' but this is good too.

65. (NE) SEASON STREAM Thousand Yard Stare

Thousand Yard Stare are very much a forgotten band from this era. It's funny that. They'd also go on to record a top 40 hit with 'Comeuppance' shortly after this.

67. (49) OH NO WON'T DO Cud (2 wks)

Great record from Carl Puttnam and co. who would finally hit the top 40 after years of trying in 1992 with the excellent 'Rich and Strange'.

75. (43) NOTHING NATURAL Lush (2 wks)

Brilliant song from a brilliant band who deserve much better than being remembered exclusively for a trio of bubblegum Britpop records some years later. Their early stuff was so much better.

Elsewhere, there's still much love for the following:

11. (26) GO Moby (2 wks)

17. (09) LOVE TO HATE YOU Erasure (6 wks)

25. (16) SUCH A FEELING Bizarre Inc. (7 wks)

26. (NE) 40 MILES Congress

30. (23) I WANT YOU FOREVER DJ Carl Cox (5 wks)

33. (36) NOCTURNE T99 (2 wks)

38. (24) SUCH A GOOD FEELING Brothers In Rhythm (7 wks)

42. (28) I THINK I LOVE YOU Voice Of The Beehive (5 wks)

43. (29) WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR ME Utah Saints (10 wks)

56. (45) JUST GET UP & DANCE Africka Bambaattaa (3 wks)

63. (57) DOMINATOR Human Resource (7 wks)

66. (NE) INSSOMNIAK DJPC

70. (53) CHARLY Prodigy (10 wks)

63 & 66 were both huge rave hits of the time. I used to include them in loads of wee mix tapes at the time, along with the likes of Blockbuster (Ivory) by Skin Up.

Happy days.

NE for Queen at 19 - was that off an new album in 91? End up at no1 when freddie died a few weeks later.

Why are slade and Don McLean top 40?

"THe Show Must Go On" was actually from Innuendo but released as promotion for 'Greatest Hits II'. It climbed to 16, then quickly dropped out - only to re-enter the chart at 34 the week after Freddie's death.

Not sure about Slade, and for some reason "American Pie" was released in late 1991 and made the Top 20 for Don - it was even on NOW 20.

'Radio Wall of Sound' wasn't a re-release, Slade were still going in 1991 and that was a new record by them. I think it featured Mike Read doing the voice of a cheesy radio personality jock on it.

I can't remember why Don MacLean was back out again - it might have been an advert at the time? I do remember hearing it on the top 40 for a few weeks at the time.

I thought Maroon 5 and Christina Aguleria spending a 16th week top 10 was a big overstay... then I remembered Bryan Adams
