NB. Even Pro Green's 153k was only enough for ~115th YTD.

Notes for YTD Sales Estimates :

1. While I am happy to answer reasonable sales requests for songs/albums, please don't ask me for the same ones week in week out, once they've left the top 100! Also remember to state specifically which you want, and whether YTD and/or total sales (but not weeklies, to avoid upsetting the OCC).

2. In order to stop me being swamped with requests, please don't request more than 6 at once, or a total of 12 in any one week..

3. Remember, I only track singles/albums that debut, or have charted significantly in the current year, with the proviso that they are also in the YTD Top 200 (as I estimate it) .

4. If a song/album debuted before 2009, I won't have lifetime sales for it, so there's no point in asking for them (try the Music Week commentary archive).

5. Once a song or album has left the top 100, please try not to ask me for updates on it every week - once a month should be sufficient (except iro those near major milestones).

6. I reserve the right to grant/deny requests that do not conform to the above.

Regards,

Oh hello "Jar of Hearts"! Forgot that might figure here at some point since sales were so poor when it initially peaked. M5 won't climb any more next week but should be up to #4 in a fortnight given they'll need to do less than 40k twice to do so. The gap between "Give Me Everything" and "Party Rock Anthem"/"Price Tag" looks big but it isn't really when you're selling over 30k a week.

It's my new fav in this T20.

Hmm, Jar Of Hearts could be another 600k seller this year? 107.8k in 9 weeks, just under 12k per week, I think it can manage that. I think Bruno will get there as well now (and Gaga of course). Rihanna/Calvin should also get there and the XF winner. Maybe Pro Green if his sales hold up REALLY well (probably not for Labrinth, I think it might pass 600k but not within the year). Anything else that's already been released will need a rather large sales boost in the next 9 weeks to get there.

Really didn't expect to see 'Jar of Hearts' in the T20 - I've said it again and again, but when it first debuted on the UK chart I thought that was it's peak - it'd never be a hit, but how wrong I was. I guess an Adele dominated year has given rise to other singer/songwriters - notably Christina Perri and Ed Sheeran.

MTV Rocks just counted down the top 20 selling 'rock' singles of the year so far, although I only caught the top 9. No sales were given. MTV genre definitions are quite loose and proves here.

09 Snow Patrol 'Caught Out In The Dark'

08 Coldplay 'Fix You'

07 Snow Patrol 'Chasing Cars'

06 Foster The People 'Pumped Up Kicks'

05 Ed Sheeran 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You'

04 Goo Goo Dolls 'Iris'

03 Coldplay 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'

02 Noah And The Whale 'Life Goes On'

01 Ed Sheeran 'The A Team'

It's repeated tomorrow at 16:00 if anyone wants to catch the rest of it. As is the sorry state of the genre at the moment it'll probably half filled with other old songs; Mr Brightside, Bring Me To Life, Teenage Dirtbag, One Day Like This....

'Iris' has sold more this year than 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' and 'Pumped Up Kicks'? Huh.

The Calling's Wherever You Will Go must be somewhere in the top 20 as well. Possibly #10?

I don't know about that, but it's not in the YTD top 200.

You know that rock is in a crushingly disappointing state when they have to qualify Ed Sheeran to find ten decent-selling songs. There's been some great stuff this year ("Rope", "Bigger Than Us", "Monster", "Up All Night") but it's all underperformed. It's getting to the stage now where the one glaring fact that would face a pop historian were they to look at the singles chart of today would be the lack of rock music there.

Moves like Jagger looks like it has a good chance of hitting 1 million unless sales significantly drop from now to the end of the year. It has 9 weeks to sell 240k while this week it sold 50k, it can easily get 26k a week from now until years end. Could i have the sales for 'One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful' And 'Leona Lewis - Collide' please

Could 2011 see a record number of 500k+ sellers in a single calendar year?

I think that there have been 20 in a couple of years in the late 1990s, when CD singles were at their peak (remember those? ), but this year has the potential for there to be perhaps even more than that?

390.5k

~126.5k

If I had a penny for everyone who's asked that recently... :P

I just wish I knew what the record number *was*?

It's dismal that shite rock songs sell so well on downloads and interesting stuff doesn't. Goes to show the general public who are not too bothered about music dont have any taste for difficult or challenging music.

Difficult or challenging music?

What does that even mean - music just sits there, it doesn't ask that you pass exams...

If you can't work that out I don't think you deserve it explaining to you...

Difficult music asks you to be entertertained and marvel at unusual chord structures, original percussion, harsh sounds, atmosphere, tention, otherworldliness etc rather than emoting or melody.
