Does anyone know if Rihanna is giving credit/paying royalties to the writers of the two songs she ripped off/sampled in her last two songs?

SOS - Tainted Love

Unfaithful - Lonely No More

Just wondering because there is a pretty blatant court case if she is not.

of course she'll be giving credit and paying royalties.

heck on the SOS single cover it says ''sample of tainted love'' ! so either her management are really dumb, or she has gave royalties.

Yeah, i was pretty sure she credited the writers of Tainted Love. It was the rip-off of Lonely No More by Rob Thomas I was a bit more unsure about....

She didn't sample Lonely No More for Unfaithful, it just sounds similar.

Sounds similar? Its almost the same chorus with a few words changed!

Still, Shakira didn't have to pay royalties to the Bangles for Underneath Your Clothes a.k.a. Eternal Flame clone

True, I remember being surprised that no-one picked up on The Killers ripping off Ricky Martin for My Brightside!!

I guess totally original tunes are getting scarce. It will always have been "almost" done before.

The Killers ripping off which Ricky Martin song? :o

The intro to Mr Brightside is nicked from Private Emotion by Ricky Martin

Unfaithful piano melody also sounds extremely similar to shakira's 'La Pared' and bits sound like her song 'No'
"shakira's 'La Pared' " which sounds ALOT like the eurythmics sweet dreams... it must be a sample

lot's of people think it samples 'Clocks' by coldplay as well

Underneath Your Clothes had NOTHING to do with Eternal Flame.

I know, but listen to it - the bridge tune is SO ripped off of Eternal Flame

The bridge of UYC sounds nothing like Eternal Flame. Do you mean the bit where she sings "I love you more than all that's on the planet..." ? The only bit of UYC that sounds like Eternal Flame is the first verse.

As for Unfaithful, the opeing piano riff does sound a lot like La Pared, but then again, the opening of the La Pared Album version does sound like Sweet Dreams. Sometimes things are a rip off, sometimes they are unintentional, sometimes they are samples and sometimes they are hommage.

Rip-offs don't count. And they happen all the time. Even U2 ripped off their intro for Vertigo from an early Feeder track. Only direct samples and covers need royalties.

the act of ripping off (plagiarim) can be taken to court though, George Harrison famously got sued for "My Sweet Lord" sounding like "He's So Fine" by the Chiffons

Well, quite a lot of UYC sounds like an 'Eternal Flame' rip-off to me, I'm not sure about anyone else though :)
