December 6, 201113 yr haha... really hope leonas version is epic... people on twitter have been blowing things way out of proportion... would make my day if people one day think of it as a leona song!!! :-P
December 6, 201113 yr I'm just gonna stick this here: http://scorpiusdiamond.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/78/ I'm sorry, but are you serious? The last line in the blog takes away any respect it may have garnered from me. So nobody can sing that song unless they've overdosed on heroin now? What a load of pretentious nonsense. What's wrong with liking the damn song, and wanting to reinterpret it to reach an audience that may not have been aware of it before? I for one love the song, it's poignant and painful, but I certainly haven't come close to dying from drugs. Also, I certainly wouldn't let that stop me from singing it in front of people if I so bloody well wanted to. If the song's so precious, and shouldn't be ruined by anyone else, it shouldn't be in the public domain, it should remain private. Instead, by releasing it, Reznor immediately allowed anyone to listen, understand and take from it different things. I sincerely hope that Leona does a fantastic job with this, as it has the potential to be quite beautiful, but those kinds of posts and mindless backlash are nothing short of predictable narrow mindedness.
December 6, 201113 yr ^ Pretty much agree with what you said. LMAO @ the last line of that blog. Did you write that, Chris?
December 7, 201113 yr Wow very interesting choice, is it confirmed to be the Nine Inch Nails 'Hurt'? Leona's voice and that song is going to be so epic. 'Colourblind' is going to be so beautiful too, and i'm most familiar with 'Iris' so looking forward to that. :D Is it up for pre-order on iTunes yet? - Hurt Lyrics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtkABtgVUZI - Colourblind lyrics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8UeeIAJ0a0 - Iris lyrics I'm intrigued which one i'll like the best, the first two are really emotional, i think its going to be such a powerful EP. Edited December 7, 201113 yr by Karma
December 7, 201113 yr EUGH. I despise music snobbery and that blog smacks of it. Anyone can sing any song and put in a decent attempt at an original version. No one needs to go through what the writer of the song did. The implication is ridiculous since a large portion of the music industry sings other people's songs and most people don't even realise. I am looking forward to hearing her versions of these songs - although I'll admit, the songs themselves don't excite me much and they aren't exactly inspired covers.

Music snobbery - that's exactly what it is, I just couldn't find those exact words at the time I wrote my post. I absolutely agree with you. Her covering this is no different to anyone else covering any song in the history of music. Why is this song so sacred? It will be interesting. No matter what she does with it, it's going to raise some harsh criticism (regardless of how good her version might be). Iris should also be good, but it has been covered too many times now. Although, as it's still "out there" thanks to X Factor, it's definitely her best shot at a chart placing. However, I'm particularly looking forward to hearing Colorblind, as there's something about that song that just really resonates with me. It's not an arms aloft stadium anthem, so I'm sure her version will remain pretty low key, but I hope it's going to be beautiful. That piano riff needs to be remain 100% intact in my opinion, it's just too good to change. Edited December 7, 201113 yr by PaulM1983
December 8, 201113 yr So is this out tomorrow or Sunday? and thats my favourite thing i've seen Slick say, i absolutely hate music snobbery! Plus i hate the fact people are so stubborn and narrow minded that they are so closed minded when coming to listen to covers and immediately say 'No-one should sing it, that artist shouldnt sing it etc'. Fair enough if you dont like that specific version but nobody has 'ruined' anything, if anything they have just shown a different interpretation which some may love and some may not, but what different versions of the same songs brings is exposure to more people so if you really liked the song, you'd be happy it wa touching and reaching more and more people. Thats what i love about radio1's live lounge, you get to listen to new interpretations of songs. Edited December 8, 201113 yr by Karma

Well Trent released it upon the request of a highly respected producer to be performed by JOHNNY (f***ING) CASH, I think that is a bit of a massive difference in the song being covered by someone that hasn't an inch if the talent Rubin and Cash have, a musician who has been through an incredible amount aswell as being one of the greatest songwriters of all time, bit different having someone that legendary cover you than someone who's career only exists because of a TV show. If you seriously think Leona Lewis is in the same leauge as Johnny Cash then you clearly have some sort of mental disorder (I'm assuming you don't though, you seem an intelligent enough person). I think the point is not having been close to dying from drugs to cover the song, theres nothing wrong with reinterpretations, but Reznor and Cash have bith been through an incredible amount of shit, just listen to the pure raw emotion in both of their versions, the NIN version literally puts chills down my spine, the Cash version puts tears in my eyes, what has Leona Lewis exactly been through to make Hurt so personal and emotional that she can even come close to matching the other versions? Because if she can't out true emotion into Hurt and make it her own there is no real point in her covering it. ^ Pretty much agree with what you said. LMAO @ the last line of that blog. Thats what i love about radio1's live lounge, you get to listen to new interpretations of songs. Obviously different people have different opinions. I love covers personally, for some of the same reasons you do, especially hearing songs in different styles (people who cover songs exactly the same as the original get on my tits so much, don't they have any of their own artistic talent?), but with Hurt it's different, it's not just any other song. It's special, it's personal, it's emotional, it's beautiful, it's one of the greatest songs ever ruined, if it's not done right, it is easily ruined, a cover of a song like Hurt will not be doing it justice except in exceptional circumstances (such as Johnny Cash covering it). Some songs are best kept untouched.
December 9, 201113 yr Author Now available to buy on Irish iTunes. Loving the sound of Iris from the previews.

Because if she can't out true emotion into Hurt and make it her own there is no real point in her covering it. First of all, I'm glad you added that part in brackets, as not once did I mention that Leona Lewis is comparable in any way, shape or form to Johnny Cash, so the insinuation I may have any kind of disorder was a bit random. I'm a massive fan of Leona, but only a complete moron would try to compare the two. That said, I still disagree with the stance in their being "no real point" in her covering the song. Why not? Isn't it possible that, like us, she finds the song moving and dark, and beautiful, and simply wants to pay tribute to it (while raising money for a charity I believe)? Actually, why does there have to be a point? She's a singer. She likes to sing songs. She obviously likes this song. What's to stop her? I just don't understand. Oh, and I just cannot fathom this notion that a cover version can "ruin" the original song. How is that possible? The original is still there, it's not damaged. In fact, usually a cover version works wonders for the original, regardless of the quality, as people naturally go looking for the original to compare them. I'd imagine it'll be the same with this song, as it's not a typically well known song. Edited December 9, 201113 yr by PaulM1983
December 9, 201113 yr All 3 songs are on YouTube. All of them are absolutely fantastic!!! Can't decide on a favourite yet. Can't wait for Saturday night to buy them - will have them on repeat  Edited December 9, 201113 yr by Mikeyjosh
December 9, 201113 yr Hurt  Colourblind  Iris :o Very different! Love it. Is it released Sunday in the UK?? Edited December 9, 201113 yr by Karma
December 9, 201113 yr Her cover of "Hurt" is beyond bland IMO. I really don't like it. It's going to be get absolutely slaughtered once she sings it on X Factor. I know all the Leona fans will love it, but all the original emotion and anger out of the track have been taken away. Quite frankly it's over produced to the absolute maximum. Would be much better if it was stripped back.
December 9, 201113 yr Not feeling it. These are basically singing lessons she's released. She doesn't seem to personally connect with the material. On Colourblind especially she is flat. None of them really compare to the originals. Edited December 9, 201113 yr by Paramore
