Posted November 23, 201113 yr Hey, I'm doing a university assignment on fandom and have chosen to do my study on Pete Doherty, Babyshambles and The Libertines Fans. I was just wondering if any fans would be interested in answering a couple of questions? This would really help me with my assignment and I would be so grateful! :)
November 23, 201113 yr Haha, there used to be a Libertines forum here which I was the moderator for! I'll happily do it!
November 23, 201113 yr Author Oh thats cool! :D Thank you so much for offering to help me I really appreciate this! The questions I'd like to ask are: How long have you been of fan of Pete Doherty? How did you become interested in him? Do you prefer him as a solo artist, or do you prefer him in babyshambles or the libertines? or do you just like all of his music? Whats your favourite Libertines album? Whats your favourite Babyshambles album? Did you like Pete's solo album? Have you ever seen Pete live? (with libertines or babyshambles) if so how was this experience? and how many times have you seen him? Have you ever meet Pete? if so how did this make you feel? Has becoming a fan of Pete changed your life at all? (for example. made friends with other fans through forums or at gigs) How do you feel about his lyrics? Do you think he's a great song writer? Are you in a band? or aspire to be a musician? if so has Pete's music been an impact on this? Thanks so much! :D
November 23, 201113 yr How long have you been of fan of Pete Doherty? Since I became a fan of The Libertines in 2004, I think around the release of 'What Became of The Likely Lads' single, I was only about 12 at the time so hadn't discovered the band before that as was out of the loop. How did you become interested in him? Through The Libertines. Do you prefer him as a solo artist, or do you prefer him in babyshambles or the libertines? or do you just like all of his music? I like all of his music but The Libertines is by far my favourite. Whats your favourite Libertines album? Up The Bracket Whats your favourite Babyshambles album? Down in Albion Did you like Pete's solo album? erm he has only had one offical one so this question seems a bit silly, unless were counting all the unoffical bootlegs, in which case the one generally known as untitled by fans. Have you ever seen Pete live? (with libertines or babyshambles) if so how was this experience? and how many times have you seen him? Only seen him with The Libertines at their reuinion performance at Reading Festival last year, I'd say it was a magical experience, generally amazing to see him and Carl performing together, and so perfect, with a good 70,000 people all singing along in unison. Have you ever meet Pete? if so how did this make you feel? No, this doesn't make me feel anything, I'm sure it would be cool to meet him but I'm not really bothered. Has becoming a fan of Pete changed your life at all? (for example. made friends with other fans through forums or at gigs) I wouldn't say it's changed my life but I guess I became good friends with Grandwicky when we had a Buzzjack Libertines forum, and now I'd consider him a real life friend rather than someone I just know on the internet. How do you feel about his lyrics? Do you think he's a great song writer? I think he is a fantastic songwriter, he has some really creative and beautiful lyrics. Are you in a band? or aspire to be a musician? if so has Pete's music been an impact on this? I'm not in a band, but have been, I suppose The Libertines have had some impact on this, I've learnt some songs on guitar and many times jammed to Libertines songs with friends. But my musical inspirations more lie elsewhere.
November 23, 201113 yr Author Thank you so much for answering the questions :D! And as for the solo album I meant Pete's Grace/Wastelands album he released in 2009 lol
November 23, 201113 yr How long have you been of fan of Pete Doherty? Since the release of 'Don't Look Back Into the Sun' (2003)...so I guess about eight years give or take? How did you become interested in him? Through liking The Libertines as a band Do you prefer him as a solo artist, or do you prefer him in babyshambles or the libertines? or do you just like all of his music? I prefer him in The Libertines, but I've liked mostly all of his other music with Babyshambles and as a solo artist. Whats your favourite Libertines album? Up the Bracket Whats your favourite Babyshambles album? Shotter's Nation Did you like Pete's solo album? Yes, really liked it. Wasn't sure what to expect (although I don't know why really, I'd loved all his music previously) but I think it's a great album. Very underrated imo. Have you ever seen Pete live? (with libertines or babyshambles) if so how was this experience? and how many times have you seen him? I saw him once performing solo at Benicassim (in 2009) and he was incredible. Didn't have that high hopes for him to be honest with all that was going on in his personal life at the time but he really blew me away. Would love the see The Libertines play live at some point. Have you ever meet Pete? if so how did this make you feel? Sadly not! Has becoming a fan of Pete changed your life at all? (for example. made friends with other fans through forums or at gigs) No, I wouldn't say it has changed my life, although it's certainly given me some good music to listen to! I guess through Pete and The Libertines I got to know people on this forum a bit more, which is a bonus. How do you feel about his lyrics? Do you think he's a great song writer? I think he's an absolutely brilliant songwriter, hoping for some more material soon (preferably with The Libertines, but anything would be good). Are you in a band? or aspire to be a musician? if so has Pete's music been an impact on this? N/A
November 23, 201113 yr Thank you so much for answering the questions :D! And as for the solo album I meant Pete's Grace/Wastelands album he released in 2009 lol sorry I just failed to read the question I thought you asked what was the best pete solo album and I got a bit confused. I thought Grace/Wastelands was good but it didn't strike me as too amazing, I definatly don't love it on the same level as The Libertines or babyshambles, I've never really been too bothered to give it many repeat listens but it does have some excellent tracks and I'd support him releasing future solo albums.
November 23, 201113 yr How long have you been of fan of Pete Doherty? Don't Look Back Into The Sun was the song that really got me into The Libertines in 2003 (so around eight years) How did you become interested in him? Because of The Libertines Do you prefer him as a solo artist, or do you prefer him in babyshambles or the libertines? or do you just like all of his music? I love all of his music but The Libertines is by far and away the best music he ever did. Whats your favourite Libertines album? Up The Bracket, its my favourite album of all time as well! Whats your favourite Babyshambles album? Down In Albion, however it was full of songs that were meant to be Libertines songs and it was recorded at the height of his ongoing drug problems so it could have been a lot better. Did you like Pete's solo album? I do! I think its better than both Babyshambles albums and it reassured me that he can still write some fantastic lyrics and songs for that matter. However I do still feel that writing songs with Carl Barat did really help with perfecting the songs (Carl really isn't all that on his own mostly, the less said about the second Dirty Pretty Things album the better!) Have you ever seen Pete live? (with libertines or babyshambles) if so how was this experience? and how many times have you seen him? I've seen him twice! Once with Babyshambles at Loughbrough University Student Union in 2006 and I finally got to see The Libertines after they reformed when they played at Reading in 2010. The Babyshambles gig was a suprising experience because there was always the factor that he either might not turn up or he might be completely out of it but he was on good form that night, he played a few Libertines that got a good reaction obviously! When he stood on top of a speaker and thought about jumping, me and my friend were joking how it almost felt that him jumping and breaking our arms would be worth it. The Libertines at Reading was a truly special moment for me as I finally got my wish to my favourite band of all time! The big thing is that I consider The Libertines to be one of the biggest influences on my music taste so if I wasn't a fan of The Libertines I may not have been as enthusiastic about going to the Reading Festival every year. Have you ever meet Pete? if so how did this make you feel? I've never met him but I guess it would nice if I did someday. Has becoming a fan of Pete changed your life at all? (for example. made friends with other fans through forums or at gigs) Well I started talking to Chris. (the poster above me) on here because we were both fans of The Libertines and yeah like he said we become good real life friends from it. I do get it quite often where I talk to new people about music and then The Libertines are mentioned and it strikes a chord so I think they are a very significant band for a lot of people my age. How do you feel about his lyrics? Do you think he's a great song writer? Lyrics are a lot of the time the most important factor into me liking a song or not and Pete's lyrics are the reason I like the Libertines so much. "An ending fitting for the start, you twist and tore our love apart" from Can't Stand Me Now is a big example especially as it highlights the demise of Pete's relationship with Carl which of course led to the demise of the band. :( Are you in a band? or aspire to be a musician? if so has Pete's music been an impact on this? I'm not in a band at the moment but I do play guitar and bass (working on keyboard as well now) and The Libertines are among many people who had an impact on me wanting to learn instruments but I hate the amount of bands I see in pubs that still just want to sound like The Libertines as 1. That whole sound is a bit dated and well you're never gonna beat The Libertines with it and 2. I don't see why you should go into music just to inpersonate someone else. If I ever am in a band then I think the main impact he'll have is in emphasising the importance of the lyrics in a song.
