Are these official figures dave? Will we move the pogues up to the top 5 and mariah up to near 900k? Slade will have overtaken Band Aid 20 and Belafonte this week anyhow. The chart will change dramatically in the next few years!!

Would Mumford and Sons - Winter Winds be on there?

Also how much has Dean Martin - Let it Snow sold?

The figures provided by Dave Taylor are from the MRIB- is that correct?

They had a different sample base in the 80s to Gallup (the official chart compilers of the time) and did not (to the best of my knowledge) have access to some chains that only provided sales info to Gallup (for example woolworths) but i'm sure Dave can explain that further.

Correct! Although they did not sample Woolworths, it wasn't such a bad thing (on some points). For instance: It was only the Woolworths tally that pushed St Winifred's School Choir to the #1 spot & previously in 1978, the same went for Brian & Michael's "Matchstick Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs"...with that other St Winifred's connection.

Mike can only take figures up to 2008, because mrib no longer exist. The other figures have been culled from OCC comps.

Ah thanks for clarifying. Whilst I take on board your points re St Winifred's :D the problem is that Woolworths was one of the largest retailers for record consumption certainly pre 90s so that's quite a sizeable omission from the MRIB database.

I only know this kinda rubbish as I've been researching for an 80s thread recently so I needed to know all this crap! :)

As I posted I think there are some issues with the chart which I trust Zeus will take up in due course (I have raised further points on Haven).

The first example of the differences in the sales you posted were for "When You Come Back To Me" which you have at 200k, yet Gallup stated that the record sold about 270K in 1989 alone, I mention this just because posters who are asking "are those official sales" will presumably asking are these sales the OCC use? and as the OCC will probably be going from the Gallup faigures (if they access at all) so they need to know what the difference is :)

I'm not trying to rubbish the figures you put on or cause any offence, it's always good to add what we can, I just thought it may help to clarify sources and what that, in effect, means.

:D

I believe the reason that Jason Donovan is missing the Sunday 31st Dec week, when MRIB always missed the last chart of the year, as their offices always shut. Elsewhere, Jason is quoted as 250. So, I would say you're right. :D I've sorted out David Essex now, & it should be 205.

So are we going with Alna JOnes MW sales for The Pogues and Mariah Carey?

I asked Mike to take it back to the start i.e. 1987 & 1994 & the totals are what he come up with. So, didn't bother AJ.

So the totals for all the songs in the list are for the pre-download era? If so we could add the download totals and find official figures!!

No Steve. Mike's already included them. He took all the physicals from MRIB, then added in the downloads from the last 5 years from Milward Brown.

Yes. They are. So, the million is not happening at the moment.

Well, it already has according to MW so someone must be wrong here.

Thats what im trying to clear up....i personally dont think the pogues have hit a million yet - they are nearer to mariah imo, next december!!

I wouldn't trust any figures from the MRIB - they claimed Cliff Richard's Mistletoe & Wine was the 12th biggest selling record of the 80s with sales of over 1 million.
do we have any updated total figures for the perennials after coming into the charts this year?
