I'm sorry, could you explain to me how this chart works?

It just looks like the highest selling songs of 2011 in the order of their chart position.

^ It's all the top 10 hits of the year (sad to see only 138, just shows how slow moving the chart has been yet again this year...) in order of chart position, then arranged by number of week at the peak.

138 top 10 hits is quite a significant downturn from 2010 when there were 152. To put it another way, the average number of weeks top 10 for a top 10 hit in 2010 was 3.42 weeks, while in 2011 it's been 3.77 weeks.

The number of different top 100 hits has also gone down a bit, from 818 to 809. Nowhere near as low as 2009 though (740).

(Top 40 and top 75 hits have also decreased in number this year, from 369 to 341 and from 642 to 621 respectively).

This is a position based year-end chart (as opposed to pure sales) so the songs are ranked according to their peak position and the number of weeks spent at that position, ties are broken by the number of weeks spent in the top 10. Is just a different approach but I think makes for a more accurate reflection of what was popular during a year since december sales are so out of proportion with the rest of the year..

It's not been slow-moving really IMO, not in comparison to 2008 anyway. 2010 was getting a bit silly, 2009 had the balance okay.

Not really, I don't think it can be argued that Nero's 'Promises' was more popular than 'Moves Like Jagger'. Sales is definitely the way to go. (However, I intend to present my new points system chart of 2011 soon - hopefully it won't go on for 10 months this time )

Agree... songs that spent several weeks at 2 are clearly more popular than those that debut at 1 and then took a huge dip, I guess there is not one perfect system

I think there has been too many no1s this year for my liking, its silly when nero, cher lloyd and the like get so high in the charts but are flops overall!!
^ lol. No way were Promises and Swagger Jagger flops. They just sold little in comparison to other #1s.

^This discussion has been done before in here but imo a no1 single that has 5 weeks in the top 40 is a flop - id be surprised if they are top 100 in the year end chart.

They got to no1 because of fanbase not because of the strength of the song!

Exactly. The primary purpose of "Swagger Jagger" was to get Cher Lloyd a number one single and thus to help promote her as an artist and the "Sticks And Stones" album. Job done. The chart run after hitting that position was of little consquence to the record company.

Good to see Murs has two songs in the top 20. Apart from Rihanna it looks like everyone else has struggled to get even two big charting hits this year.

A number 1 for Cher definately gave her the illusion of success that Matt Cardle for instance could have done with for his public perception, job done really.

While it may look as if the charts have slowed down this year, 70% of hits in the Top 75 are hitting their peak position in their first week on chart. This is a couple of percent down on 2010, but up on each of 07/08/09, about the same as 06 and a lot less than 05.
