The Tom Kay Top 100

...OF THE YEAR 2011

Welcome to my chart of the year 2011! This is the first time that I've actually got it tgether to post my own chart of the year before (though I did compile one last year, and as a special bonus I will post it at the end of this run down). It's been an amazing year, and even more amazingly I've actually published almost a whole year's charts. I did lose it a bit around August/September to apologies to songs that were hits around that time, they may underperform a little bit here... I'll be running down ten at a time up until the top 40, at which point they will all appear individually. Anyway let's do it!

KEY:

We start off with a couple of artists that still have songs in the chart, and may well have had bigger songs through the year, but Call It What You Want and Lego House are both great songs with excellent videos and being still in the charts at this time of year means that they may well have some legs in the chart. At #97 is the first appearance of a BJSC song in my chart, my entry to XXXIX, which despite underperforming is still a song I'm quite proud of, in that it was my first asian pop entry in the contest. Speaking of at #96 is this year's first appearance of Girls' Generation, my favourite k-pop group, who were #12 in my chart of 2010 with Gee and released a stunning Japanese album this year (along with a less stunning Korean one) and this was one of the MAX TRACKS within. At #95 is another Numayanian smash that despite not being sent to BJSC was a bit of a summer anthem and despite the low peak had a great run... Clare Maguire had a big year with me at least, and we may well see more of her later. Agnes made a great comeback a few months ago but since has gone a little bit quiet, if only she was in Melodifestivalen... #92 is a fabulous song from the ex singer of British indie group Mattafix, that has been a smash hit in Germany, has just re-entered my chart and hopefully will hit the UK charts in the next couple of months. Rounding off at #91, one of the less likely chart hits of the year, but following up on the Gaga collaboration, and sampling one of my favourite 80s tunes, Buzzin was always going to have a place in my ©heart, even if I never bought it because I couldn't find a version without 50 Cent...

90-81 includes some of the biggest UK sales hits of the year mixed up with international hits and total flops! Ke$ha, Adele, DJ Fresh and Example were all UK #1s and resultingly had hits here, even if they underperformed a little (or in Adele's case A LOT, but I got bored of it really quickly). That's not to say that we've seen the last of her though... Natteravn was entered in BJSC and I liked it, but it wasn't until the English version was released that it really clicked with me, and it became a long runner despite it's low peak. I had almost forgotten about the existence of Rachel Adedeji, listening again for the first time in ages, it's very Rihanna-lite, even down to the video. Girls' Generation are back with their biggest hit in Japan, and Martin/Kele recently got a leg up from Iceland (the shop not the country) but at least Pavel's happy. Shakira was another big artist who underperformed this year, not so much internationally or in my chart, but in the UK :(

80-71 is bookended by songs whose glories are either ahead or behind them. Despite Rihanna Feat. Drake lasting 9 weeks in total with What's My Name, only 7 of those were in 2011. Meanwhile Avicii is this week's new number 1 and one that I think will keep filling the dancefloor in my head well into 2012 (the Flo Rida track it's sampled on has not charted at all as yet). My favourite current J-pop group Perfume make an appearance with a song that like Avicii has just reached it's peak in my chart this week, and thanks to getting the superb album for Christmas is likely to stick around a while longer :D At 72 is Patrick Wolf's song which I discovered in BJSC, although I bought Lupercalia on the back of The City I had initally overlooked Together, and the Cherry B edit of the Garcon Garcon remix of the track opened my eyes to it. Its' longevity however is due to the release of the video and the Brumalia EP where it rightfully takes pride of place. Nicole, Coldplay and LMFAO fill the UK smash hit quota, whereas Hurts make their first appearance in this year's top 100 with a song overlooked for UK release, but which gave them their third top 40 hit in Germany, and they are again my favourite band of the year  And get the hell on with it and release #75 next summer Gaga :arrr:

70-61 is my highest concentration of BJSC entries throughout the chart, my entries from XXV, XXVII and my debut DNQ in XXXIV are found here, however my only BJSC #1 of the year, The YOUNG PROFESSIONALS - D.I.S.C.O. spent only 5 weeks on and as such landed at #133. Ronika at #64 was very close to being a BJSC entry in the same month as Alcazar, would it have done better, no way of telling, but it's funny to see the two together. Also (nearly) together are this years' two entries from one of my favourite bands of all time, The Feeling, who I finally saw live just before Christmas and they didn't let me down  They're seperated by another of my favourite artists, Christophe Willem, whose Prismorphonic is one of my albums of the year :)

Not very high for The Feeling. They failed to reach my top 50 altogether though "Leave Me Out Of It" would've done a few weeks ago :(

Hi Rob, thanks :) Yes you're right about The Feeling, but I think two songs in the top 70 is good enough, the fact that they have had virutally no success this year though in the sales charts is probably their failing :(

60-51 starts off with three song contest entries, the second of this year's Eurovision hits after Kati Wolf from Hungary is Lena whose Taken By A Stranger comes a long way from matching the #20 she acheived with Satelite in 2010's chart. Followed up with two of my favourite BJSC entries of the year from XXXII (though I'm ashamed to say I never saw Yelle's video until now!) and XXXVIII. The rest of this section is made up of the usual selection of UK chart hits from The Wanted, Leona Lewis/Avicii, Florence + The Machine and Ed Sheeran (though the latter took AGES to take off from me, hence the short run), along with a couple of (so far) flops from David Guetta and Cee-Lo Green, which I hope both take off big in 2012, given that they're easily the best songs of their artist's eras!

More song contest action in this last part of the top 100 before we get into the exciting top 40. And there's more song contest action, with #50, #49 and #47 all being from Eurovision. For some reason I was adamant at various points that Serbia and Albania would win the contest this year, but I never dreamed how close Raphael would come, despite how much I loved it. As for #48 it was a Melodifestivalen star with one of the hottest videos of the year, which again was mysteriously pulled from release :/ Caro Emerald's biggest song in my chart this year is at #46 but expect her to score many hits in the future. And at #44 is another entry from Hurts my favourite band of 2010-2011 (Wonderful Life was in fact my #1 song of last year) with a song that really should have been the second single, or at least had a proper vidio made for it...

Hi Martin :)

Yep  It was in BJSC, don't you remember? Actually he does sing a bit on the chorus. And I have no interest in your sordid fantasies, unless you want to know what I'd like to do to Olly Murs :kink:

40. Alexis JORDAN Good Girl (Peak: 8, Weeks: 10, Points: 485)

A big hit for me at the start of the year, the button-cute Ms Jordan sets off my top 40 with a boom like an 808.

Other hits in 2011:

Happiness 7** 20wks**

Got 2 Luv U (with Sean Paul) 11 5wks

39. Will YOUNG Come On (Peak: 1x1, Weeks:12*, Points: 489)

Speaking of cuties, this man has been a feature of my iPod and my thoughts for a good decade now, I was so pleased to see him come back with a fantastic album, and while this wouldn't have been my first choice for second single, the cute video and great remixes still mean it makes my year end top 40. But where will Jealousy be? Wait and see...

Other hits in 2011:

38. BROWN EYED GIRLS Sixth Sense (Peak: 11, Weeks: 15, Points: 490)

The first k-pop entry in my chart, sent to BJSC by Daehun, but a hit with be both before and after. If only they would come back to Japan, I like the Japanese language better than korean and I understand it better than Korean. 凄いですね!

Other hits in 2011:

Cleansing Cream 32, 2wks

37. MARINA And The DIAMONDS Radioactive (Peak: 5, Weeks: 11, Points: 501)

Poor Marina :( While Florence's comeback was to fanfare and huge international sales, Marina comeback with a storming dance track, completely different from her old material and flops miserably. Maybe she can pull it off woth the album, but I have my doubts. Either way, Radioactive is a CHOOON, and she fully deserved the top 5 hit in my chart.

Other hits in 2011:

Starring Role 54, 2wks

36. SUGABABES Freedom (Peak: 6, Weeks: 15, Points: 507)

At the start of this year it looked like Heidi, Amelle and Jade (JAAAAADE ) were going to have a pretty big 2011. Unfortunately it all turned to shit quickly thereafter, facing massive release delays, losing a Britain's Got Talent performance to some 13 year old opera singer and eventually facing the indignation of releasing this single for free as a "present to fans". Shame, because it deserved much, much more than that. Let's hope 2012 has better things on the horizon for the girls...

35. Dino MERLIN Love In Rewind (Peak: 2x1, Weeks: 10, Points: 514)

The first Eurovision entry in the top 40, and this was one that probably meant the most to me personally this year, a beautiful melody and lyric. I entered a competition to win tickets to the contest in Berlin by writing a French or German lyric to this, went for the former, but they never announced the winners, or recorded the foreign versions :( Here's the lyric anyway, in case any of you want to read it :kink:

Deux-mille onze, c'est l'année d'amour

Et plus que j'en pense, plus qu'ils m'entourent

Mes angoises, mon cafard

Et quelque chose me manque, est-ce bizarre

Oh, c'est si simple

Si raisonable

C'est déja fait

Par contre j'tremble

Au fond de l'âme

Au bord de pleurer

C'est plus belle que toute c'que j'ai revé

Cette vie qui m'aurait tout donné

Si j'avais pas appris à faire

Tous les faux pas du terre

L'amour, l'amour à l'envers

J'aurais bien préferé faire

Des chansons qui liberent

Et pas l'amour à l'envers

Aussitôt, oh

Aussitôt, oh

Aussitôt, oh

Aussitôt

Oh

L'amour, l'amour à l'envers

J'aurais bien préferé faire

Des chansons qui liberent

A cet amour...

(Aussitôt qu'on prenne la vie pour la peser)

(On verra que les grands joies pesent plus que des petits regrets)

If Only You wasn't pulled from release, it just flopped hard - I saw it in the top 300 on iTunes at one point iirc!

P.s, I am reading, but I'll reply at the end :D

34. Lana DEL REY Video Games (Peak: 4*, Weeks: 11*, Points: 516)

A bit of an odd one at #34. This song didn't clickw ith me AT ALL when it was sent to BJSC, but the more popular it became, the more it grew on me. Lana herself is an odd character, part of me feels that she's the indie Lady Gaga and is a completely manufactured, but it's no reason to ignore this superb song, which is still in my chart at the same time as her new one. What 2012 has in store for her, time will tell...

Other hits in 2011:

Born To Die 55 1wks

33. Nicola ROBERTS Lucky Day (Peak: 2x1, Weeks: 11, Points: 521)

Another odd one for different reasons, despite being a huge Girls Aloud fan, I was never that excited about Nicola's solo project and let's just say Beat Of My Drum initially lived up to my expectations, but I then saw her live, and her vocals were stellar :o So BOMD was a belated hit, and this track with it's post-GA electropop vibe and super-cute video flew to #1. Her new single may be a slightly duff choice, but I still think she has a big year ahead of her, in my chart at least, and roll on the GA reunion :kink:

Yo-Yo 47 3wks

Oh OK :o I swear I could never find it on iTunes...

Thanks :D I'm planning to comment on yours when I'm done too :)

Hey Tom :D

Just scrolled down your 100-33 so far and noticed...

85. ADELE Someone Like You 1x1 7 311

...which seems really low for a chart topper. Did it only spend 7 weeks in total in your chart?

Does that mean this chart is based on a points system (like my Chart of 2011 will be? :D )

Anyways, I'll post some proper comments once the countdown has been completed.
