Eric the UK is certainly not irrelevant, just look at Lana Del Ray for one recent example first week sales 117,000 in UK, 76,000 in US.

UK is a very important market for all artists, a lot of money can be made here.

I think you are over exaggerating here, Britney has had millions of hits and #1's. A song that got to #3 in the US, helped massively by a remix with Nicki Minaj & Kesha along with rather average chart positions in most other countries it charted in, is certainly not one of her biggest hits. It wasn't a flop internationally, but you are certainly increasing the songs achievements here.

It wasn't helped "massively" by the Nicki/Ke$ha remix at all. The remix was only in the charts for like 2 weeks, whilst Till the World Ends was in the top 20 almost 4 months after its release. It was like the Britney remix of S&M in the UK, it just gave the song a boost from a couple of weeks, and then promptly free-fell out of the top 1000. And the peak positions can be mis-leading, as we all know from our own chart. Till the World Ends "only" got to #3 but was a much bigger hit than Hold It Against Me, which got to #1. Infact, even I Wanna Go, which peaked at #6 or something like that was a bigger hit than Hold It Against Me. Some songs have lower peaks but really longer chart runs. If you ask people from countries other than the UK to name the biggest pop songs of 2011, a lot of them will probably mention Till the World Ends, along with Fireowrk, Born This Way, We Found Love, etc.

Turn Me On FINALLY in the top 10!! Now it's a case of whether it can climb to #8 before the Emeli Sande and DJ Fresh get in the top 10 tommorrow.

Boo at 'Turn Me On' going top 10. Please don't let this take away all of Titanium's steam -_-

It's not only sales, a lot of worldwide music markets follow the UK trends of music. Russia is definitely very influenced by the UK. Not to the scale I'd like it to be but still.

The UK clearly does have some impact on the rest of the worlds charts. For example how Someone Like You was selling well in many other countries before being a single there (most countries got Set Fire to the Rain 2nd). The only reason I can think of for that is because of the hype from the UK over the Internet.

And you see Make You Feel My Love high on other countries iTunes aswell sometimes. Again, since Adele hasn't really promoted it as far as I'm aware, I think its popularity here over the past couple of years has helped it sell elsewhere again.

I can't believe how many good songs there are in the charts atm. It's amazing scrolling down the top 100 and seeing songs like Promiscuous, The Motto, I Got 5 On It, Niggas in Paris, Rack City, and many others in there. I seriously LOVE whoever is deciding all these discounts aswell.

I don't see why people like turn me on, its easily the worst thing david guetta has done :/
Japan seems to have strange buying-habits though. It seems they spend a whole year having a different song at #1 almost every week. I wonder if they hold songs back like the UK, or if their public is just more musically aware, so they don't take 6 months to discover a good song.

Japan has a Hot 100 just like the US, doesn't it?

For what it's worth, I'm sure the top 5 music markets are:

1. Japan

2. US

3. UK

4. Germany

5. France

But as Bre said, I have a feeling Germany might have overtaken the UK now.

Yeah, Japan has a Hot 100. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hot_1...of_2011_(Japan)

And also an Oricon chart (there's a poster named after it here :D), which I think they use as the official one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Orico...singles_of_2010

It's funny seeing all thoes Japanses songs getting to #1 and then Born This Way randomly thrown in.

France??

The OZAP report is always commenting on how dead their music market is...

France??

Well France was in the top 5 last time I checked, which was around 4 years ago now I believe.

Btw, great to see "Guettaj" in the top 10 now. :kink: Hopefully TMO climbs before the two major new releases inevitably knock #9 and #10 out.

France used to only include physical sales in their official chart until like a year ago, so their sales were really, really, really low at one point. But now they include downloads in their official chart, so the sales could be higher now, but their #1 last week (that weird Michel Telo song) sold 16,000 apparently. Obviously that's much lower than the UK, etc. But I don't know how that compares to everywhere else.

As far as I know France is the 5th biggest market in the world but I am 99% sure that Bré's rank was right. It goes:

USA

Japan

Germany

UK

In terms of cultural impact the UK is #2 I'd imagine. I can't think of any non-US country that exports as many artists. But at the same time I agree with Eric Blob that in terms of "was this single a success?" in the world of an international artist, the UK is irrelevant. Even if it's a big market, it's one country. "No1curr" essentially. One non-US country doesn't make any real difference.

Also I missed the discussion about UK acts going to the US. :( I have faith in Cher anyway.

Whats with taio cruz at 53 with troublemaker he was in top 10 few weeks ago???So now turn me on is in top 10 will it get number 1???I realy hope so!!!!!
I'm almost certain it is:

1 US

2 Japan

3 Germany

4 UK

I remember reading an article not long ago which said that the UK had dropped to 4th behind Germany, I may be wrong about the order of the top 2 though.

I'm sure you're wrong, I read exactly the opposite in the German version of Musicweek plus illegal downloads are very high in Germany.

Although what I can think of is, in Germany there are still higher sales for the physical singles than in the UK. You might have mixed this info with the overall sales. In Germany almost every single get a physical release still, although the question is how long because sales are terrible there.

I read also, a year ago or so, that a song can be number 1 in Germany with 30k too and that's the general sales for a number 1 there. Overall sales in the UK are almost double of what is in Germany.

He was ridic frontloaded. Once he lost the top 10 he started bombing down.

Surprising given their population is 25% bigger than ours - I'd expect a #1 to be selling 100k most weeks really. It interests me how population relates to sales in different countries - for instance, the US' population is about 5x that of the UK but the sales threshold for a platinum album is only 3.3x ours. Album sales full stop are horrendously down on those in the UK, probably because a far lower percentage of their population buys "contemporary" or "popular" music.

The UK/US comparisons are muddled up though. Gold in the US is 5 times Gold in the UK. You could use that just as much as you could use Platinum..
