Everybody was Madonna's very first single released nearly 30 years ago on October 6th 1982, Madonna had recorded a demo of the song with Steve Bray. She asked DJ Mark Kamins, to play it at Danceteria (a club she hung out at in New York). He was impressed by the song and took her to Sire Records, who signed her for a two song deal. Madonna was ultimately signed for two 12 inch singles by the President of Sire, Seymour Stein (who was in hospital at the time when he signed her). Madonna got $5,000 in advance and $10,000 per song for each song she wrote.

Everybody went to make #3 on the Hot Dance Club Play Chart, #8 in Brazil and #107 in America.

The song helped Madonna get her first ever magazine cover. It was on December's Dance Music Report. The video had a $1,500 budget. Madonna was performing in a club with 2 back up dancers, with lights in the background. The video helped people recognise who Madonna was as she wasn't pictured on the single artwork.

Madonna has performed Everybody on the Virgin Tour in 1985, it was used as the introduction the line used was "Dance and sing, get up and do your thing" just before Express Yourself on the Blonde Ambition Tour in 1990. It was the final song on the Girlie Show tour in 93 and Madonna did it again 12 years on the Confessions Promo tour in 2005/6. It was originally planned to be on the Confessions Tour in 2006 as the second last song but got replaced by Lucky Star and on November 22, 2008, Madonna performed Everybody as the audience request song at Atlantic City on the Sticky & Sweet Tour.

Everybody was the song that made me think what a great album "Madonna" is.

For a few years it was my favourite song from the album.

Her live performances have all been great, my favourite is the Girlie Show who wouldn't wanna dance and sing to that!.

She was originally thought to be a black singer due, as you say, to her not appearing on the single sleeve, a few people got a shock when they saw her in that video!
Everybody used to get lots of play in r&b stations so people assumed she must be black lol. So madonna's debut single is an "R&B" song if it was releasd today it'll be considered an pop song.

I love the sleeve and its story! Its actully one of my fav vinyls that i have!

I was so pleased she included it on the 'Celebration' album! I have also read that the 'seymour signing her when he was in hospital' isnt actually true?

I love all the live perofrmances of this track, shame it was taken off the confessions tour!!
