Fabio Capello has resigned as England manager, the Football Association has confirmed.

Capello resigned following a meeting with FA chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horne at Wembley Stadium.

An FA statement read: "The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager."

I wish idiots like Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand would stop mouthing off about who should be the next England manager. Complete idiots the both of them.

Yeah I really don't think players should be commenting, although it's obviously going to be Harry. More pressure than ever to get a manager who's English, by far the best English manager around and he's said it would be an honour to manage his country. He'll stay at Spurs until the end of the season, lead them to automatic CL qualification and possibly an FA Cup final, probably as far as he'll be able take them.

I saw Barry Fry's hilarious rant on SSN last night...

And he does make some very good points, he couldn't have phrased them any worse (he's Barry Fry after all!) but for the last 10 years we've had a succession of managers who've inspired zero confidence in the national team, the interest in England as a team is pretty much at an all time low, the public aren't interested and neither are the players, whether that be a foreigner or not I don't really care, although it's likely to have to be an English manager.

WOW Barry Fry... I see the rationale behind having an England manager, but saying Fabio Capello didn't have any commitment? Laughable. The guy is a born winner. We have a very average side. I don't think the players are motivated enough to play for England, especially some of the more alleged professional senior ones. We've not done well in a major tournamenet for 16 years. The best man for the job should be appointed and nothing else. Redknapp fits that criteria, but if he rejects it (which is unlikely) what then? Roy Hodgson? Stewart Pearce? The guys tactics will be found out in no time.

If the FA had any clue they'd appoint one man and one man only - Gus Hiddink. Regardless of whether he's foreign or not, he would get the best out of the group of players we have.

Capello did himself no favours. No we're not on the same level as the top 3 in Europe, but after that there's no reason why we shouldn't be in good contention for 4th, but he ruined all his good work in qualification with possibly the worst squad selection for a major tournament any country has ever made, it tells that for the forthcoming championship there will be a maximum of about 8/9 players that were at the world cup and coupled that with some of the worst tactical decisions too, he should've gone after that really, the players were at fault as much but it was completely abject from a manager. He's got much better over the past year but did anyone really have any confidence in him to do anything inspirational for the Euro 2012? I certainly didn't. I feel for him a bit but the FA made the correct decision re: Terry. The way they went about it was hopelessly wrong of course.

I dunno I see his logic for 2010. Does he take a risk with a bunch of un-proven players, or go for experience? He went for the latter and it failed. He then realised his mistake and started playing some of the brighter players England have got coming through. We didn't play well in 2010. The players weren't up for it, and you could hardly blame them. I think then Capello had lost the dressing room. Yes he should have gone after the 2010 World Cup, but whose fault was it? The FAs of course. I think England stand a better chance of winning the European Championships under Redknapp than Capello. I can see Capello's ideology, he tried to turn us in to a poor man's Spain basically, but our players don't have the technical levels of Spain, let alone most European countries. But with or without Capello we're still light years away from winning a major tournament.

There were too many risks in 2010 though, and a lot weren't proven or particularly experienced internationally. King was too much of a risk. Carragher, Upson and Wright-Phillps were always going to be dreadful selections, Cole hadn't played well since his injury, Heskey I could understand as he played well in qualification but looked totally abject in South Africa. His selection policy WAS awful.

Pearce confirmed for Holland in 3 weeks.

Bernstein's comments are quite interesting. I think the whole thing was handled very poorly by the FA.

But the main point was their preference is for an English/BRITISH manager, and they can't just have one target because it makes it too hard for negotiations. Redknapp aside I don't want anyone English touching the job.

Well, naturally. They wouldn't be the FA otherwise.

Under Capello England went from 14th in the FIFA rankings to fifth so his tenure wasn't the abject failure many people seem to think. We had failed to qualify for Euro 2006 under McClown. Under Capello we qualified for the World Cup and Euro 2010 without much difficulty. The great unknown about his time in the job is what would have happened if that linesman had been awake when Lampard scored against Germany. How would Germany have coped with losing their 2-0 lead in the space of a couple minutes?

It's basically saying "We want Harry Redknapp and if we can't get him we want Martin O'Neill". They can't really say it any other way though...

Stuart Pearce as manager for the Holland friendly LOL

Did anyone at the FA even watch the Under 21 tournament? The fact that he's seen as this great manager is laughable. He had a group of players consisting of Sturridge, Welbeck, Jones, Walker etc.., who are now all involved in the senior set up and yet he still couldn't qualify for the knock out stages with his awful tactics

I have sympathy for Capello. Yes he made a few mistakes and the World cup campaign was a bit of a disaster, but I think he did a good enough job with the players available. Unfortunately the media have always been out to get him mainly because he's foreign

The only English manager I'd see as a good replacement is Redknapp, but would he really want to leave Spurs? Roy Hodgson shouldn't even be an option. Personally I think someone like Rafa Benitez would be perfect with his cup competition experience, but once again the media will be out to get him from the very start

You say that but Capello is a proven 'World Class' manager and his tactics at the World Cup were no better, is it fair to judge someone on one tournament or a whole reign? He's had one campaign that ended badly, and two he did very well in....

Odds for next England manager with Coral:

Harry Redknapp 2-7f

Stuart Pearce 5-1

Guus Hiddink 10-1

Jose Mourinho 10-1

Roy Hodgson 16-1

Rafa Benitez 25-1

Arsene Wenger 33-1

Gareth Southgate 33-1

Martin O'Neill 33-1

Alan Pardew 50-1

Brendan Rodgers 50-1

Carlo Ancelotti 50-1

Sam Allarydce 50-1

Alan Shearer 66-1

David Moyes 66-1

Glenn Hoddle 66-1

Alan Curbishley 80-1

Ian Holloway 80-1

Mark Hughes 80-1

Steve Bruce 80-1

The policy of wanting a British manager is a far more understandable one now, when we've just had a manager who can barely speak English, than it was back in 2006 with Sven. Back then there was no good reason to rule out foreign candidates, particularly when there was no candidate as strong as Redknapp is now. I'll reserve my judgement on the guy until after the Euros but given at one time or another he'll have managed a bigger proportion of the potential squad than anyone else out there I think he is the best candidate, particularly at such short notice.

10/1 Gus Hiddink? Brilliant odds!

I thought that. I'd be happy with him or Mourinho, hell I'd take Wenger like a shot compared to any of the other Brits on the list.

Mourinho would be ok, and I think he'd take it, but he'd be wanting silly money. Money which I don't think the FA are going to want to spend after the last few financial disasters they've had. Hinnink would be excellent. He's tactically astute, and has proven it on a world level. I thinm Wenger is a very good manager, but as England manager? I'm not sure. I think he's tactically weak. Look at his Champions League record. 15 concecutive years in it, and one flukely final appearance. Personally I think his tactics would be found out in weeks rather than months.

But if the odds and papers are to be believed, we'll be going from someone who can't speak English to someone who can't write English. Or fax English. Or e-mail English. Or text English.
