It's called a tribute.

And this is happening in every country, so you can change that 'typical Brits' to 'typical people'. I Will Always Love You is heading for #1 in the USA.

Well said. I said the same thing when Amy Winehouse died. It's all rather grisly. True Whitney fans will have her music anyway.

It's not just Brits though. 'I Will Always Love You' is currently no.3 on US iTunes.

Are you going to complain about music channels playing Whitney tribute shows as well?

If no one downloaded her songs people would complain that no one cared.

More like typical brits will find anything to moan about -_-

I do think one of her albums will be #1 next Sunday probably the Ultimate Collection, I can't see "I Will Always Love You" repeaking at #1 though, more likely #5 by the end of the week, with DJ Fresh, Emeli, David Guetta and Gotye ahead of her.

No, because that is a general appreciation of her.

Downloading a track that you would never have thought of buying were she still alive, isn't.

Bré, would you do a similar 'My Name Is Not Susan' iTunes watch in the RIP thread in the lounge please?

Why 'My Name Is Not Susan' in particular? Does this song have Des'ree-esque Buzz-notoriety? :o

(In any case it's not top 300 yet :P)

It is general appreciation to want to listen to her music as a tribute to her death, then realise you don't already own the songs and download them, is it not? The only case I'd agree with you in is if people are just downloading her songs for the sake of it without intending to listen to them at all and I doubt there are that many people doing that.

I cannot stand people who are just bitter at a time when a musician dies. As bre said its A TRIBUTE. People clearly cared when she was alive she sold MILLIONS of records and touched millions of people. If you have nothing nice to say dont say it at all at a time like this, Whitney was a great artist and a human being, a mother, daughter, friend etc be more sensitive.

I hope Whitney's music makes a huge impact this week on the chart as she made a great impact on music as a whole.

I'm of the opinion if you cared enough about an artist prior to their death you would already own their songs (at least their signature song which is climbing). The amount of people "liking" Whitney on my Facebook just shows they didn't really care that much to do it before she died. The same happened with Amy and Michael.

It just seems an odd mentality to me that's all. People generally buy music because they like it, do they not? 'I Will Always Love You' is the same track now as it was yesterday, it hasn't got any better. If you didn't want to buy it then, why buy it now?

This has puzzled me ever since the death of John Lennon in 1980, so I doubt I will ever understand it :)

But yea, she'll have a number one album for sure

I wouldn't call it "odd" that people are downloading Whitney's music now. I wouldn't even call it some contrived effort for people to make a tribute to her either as some people are saying as a defense.

I think it's much more simple than that. When an artist dies, naturally you start thinking about their music, and in Whitney's case it really hit home to me last night just how many great songs she had. That will be at the front of people's heads today and naturally they're going to want to download some of them. I know I will be buying her Greatest Hits this week, for no other reason than I've been reminded of her great songs by this tragic turn of events, and want to listen to them.

There are many reasons people buy tracks by recently dead artists - but predominantly it's because just at that moment they really want to hear those songs - that's not cynical or indeed in any way bad - it's just a human reaction. I believe it's known as paying respect. I'm not a huge Huston fan but I may well give her back cat a preview later because for anyone with a talent to die so young in part because of what that talent brought with it is sad and makes one reflect.
Because I locked it :P

PS: now that the new thread is created it doesn't make much sense to make the old one until 50 pages :heehee:

I can see where you are coming from - but I invariably find it leaves a bunch of posts I can't reply to. If we'd reached the end of page 50, then closing it would make more sense.

I don't suppose there's a way of blocking new posts, but allowing ones that only quote from old ones?

Typical that people are only downloading and listening to songs when an artist dies...who gave a shit about her 12 hours ago? She was a laughing stock for the past 5 years and now suddenly a God-like figure (to Twitter)

Let me guess - you work for a newspaper, writing the obituaries column...

Well I don't know about you/other people but I don't legally own that many 'old' (as in pre-2010-ish) songs/albums, even by artists that I care about a lot. I only downloaded Coldplay's first 4 albums legally when they were all reduced massively on iTunes and they're one of my favourite bands/artists ever (already owned them illegally but I thought I might as well download them legally anyway if they're going cheap). I don't have the money to buy every song that I've ever liked or every album by every artist/band that I've ever liked

There wasn't any particular reason to buy her songs yesterday though, she hadn't exactly been in the news recently. An artist dying essentially acts as promotion of their material especially with all the music channels playing her songs and any form of promotion sells music. It may seem a bit morbid but it makes sense.

I can't see her beating Emeli Sandé personally, but who knows, maybe Emeli will be a new La Roux/Florence + The Machine.

Just did an iTunes update, and Whitney now has 55 entries in the T1000 (30 different songs).
What is odd about someone buying it today rather than yesterday? Surely its so simple to understand, her material is all over the TV and Radio. Wow i really dont get some people out there.
