Such is the case with Benh Zeitlin‘s impressive debut feature that takes you on a journey into the Bathtub, a fictionalized bayou backwoods community of Louisiana that serves as parable for living on the edge of the world. Told through the eyes of 6 year old girl Hushpuppy, Quvenzhané Wallis who delivers perhaps the greatest child performance of recent history, the film is a whirlwind of wonder and foreboding doom. Expertly shot cinematography, amazing art direction, energetic music and a fascinating script made Beasts of the Southern Wild the most unique cinematic experience I had at this years Sundance. Full review: http://thefilmstage.com/reviews/sundance-r...-southern-wild/ So Beasts of the Southern Wild is this year's Grand Jury Prize winner (Like Crazy got it in 2011), and it's getting extremely positive reviews at the moment, especially for its heavy use of magical realism in telling the story. It also won the Sundance Institute's Indian Paintbrush Producer's Award and Fox Searchlight have nabbed the U.S distribution rights, with the film planned to be released sometime this year. Hopefully, that means we get it on our fair shores not too long after, as it looks like an amazing piece of cinema. Edited February 22, 201213 yr by Daniel.
February 9, 201312 yr Author I've come back just so I can say what an AMAZING, JOYFUL, FULFILLING, WONDERFULLY TOLD, STUNNING, IMPORTANT film this is. Admittedly I haven't seen Amour, but I don't think I can be swayed into thinking that Quvenzhané Wallis does not deserve the Oscar; she carries the film on her tiny shoulders, and it works because she is utterly believable and heartbreaking. She auditioned for this when she was 5?! 10/10; the directing and storytelling is top notch, a richly told modern day fairy tale that is expertly layered. Also, the score! I want it to SWEEP come February 24th. I was left openly crying and buoyant. Edited February 9, 201312 yr by Daniel.
February 10, 201312 yr Okay, I just saw this. If Quvenzhané doesn't get an Oscar for SUCH a performance then it's going to be the single worst decision they ever made / will ever make. I believe she was about 7 when they shot the movie so that makes the case even more incredible.
February 11, 201312 yr I thought this was a steaming heap of shit I'm afraid. The girl was good, yes, Oscar worthy? absolutely not, but then they always love shit like this/old people being old on screen (hi Amour). The film just made NO SENSE AT ALL to me and just left me utterly cold and indeed I FELL ASLEEP watching it about 70 minutes in.
February 12, 201312 yr You didn't like Amour? Or at least appreciate how bloody incredible Riva's performance was? Wow.
February 12, 201312 yr The phrase "Oscar worthy" doesn't mean much anymore either. Most of the nominations (and winners) are completely undeserving.
February 12, 201312 yr You didn't like Amour? Or at least appreciate how bloody incredible Riva's performance was? Wow. Nah, I thought she was very good actually, that comment was more just my anger at the massive praise for the little girl when all I wanted to do was tell her to shut the f*** up. The film (Amour that is) was an absolute CHORE to sit through, despite liking the sentiment.

The film (Amour that is) was an absolute CHORE to sit through, despite liking the sentiment. I realise this thread isn't at all about Amour, but I absolutely loathed watching it. I was just like "why did I choose this film when I just want to bury my head in the sand like every cheerful 18 year old should do". I guess that was the whole point of the film, but I'm still stubborn. Edited February 15, 201312 yr by Harve
