Yep, on the 02 March 1998, Ray of Light (album) was first put on the shelves. The album was a huge success worldwide, reaching number one in Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK, and Top 10 in Austria, Ireland, US, and Japan - just to name a few! It has gone on to sell almost 20 million worldwide, and is nearing 2 million in the UK and nearing 4 million in the US.

"Frozen" was chosen as the lead single, and was release in the previous month, where it charted at number one and two in the UK and US respectively. It has become one of her best sellers in the UK, selling over half a million here. With the success of "Frozen", it was no surprise that "Ray of Light" was such a success. In the UK, the album was one of 5 new entries to the Top 40 - the others being Savage Garden (#14), The Mavericks (#17), Richie Sambora (#24), and Joe Satriani (#32). There was also a re-entry for Madonna's previous studio album - "Bedtime Stories" - at #27. Elsewhere in the Top 200 albums, Madonna's "The Immaculate Collection" was at #101 and "Something to Remember" at #184. "Ray of Light" sold almost 140k in its first week.

The follow-up to "Frozen" was the album’s title track, which debuted at #2 upon release in the UK in May, behind All Saints' "Under the Bridge/Lady Marmalade". In the US, it peaked at #5, and was certified Gold for sales of over 500k, whereas in the UK, it has sold 275k.

There were three more releases from the album - "Drowned World/Substitute for Love", "Power of Goodbye" and "Nothing Really Matters", and in the UK, they debuted at numbers 10, 06, and 07, and have sold 91k, 180k, and 130k respectively. In the US, "Drowned World" failed to chart, "Power of Goodbye" reached #11, and "Nothing Really Matters" only just made it to #93.

"Ray of Light" is probably my second favourite Madonna album. So calm and relaxing! I think that the singles released from it are fantastic! "Ray of Light" and "Power of Goodbye" are my favourite releases from the album, the latter I find extremely under-rated, although plenty of us here love it! :D And I am infact going to play the album right now to celebrate!

So what are your views on the album? What are your favourite songs? What would you have chosen for singles and what order would you put them in? Perhaps rank/rate the tracks if you like! :D Below are the 5 singles released, so you can reminisce and remember how great the album was!

Frozen

Ray of Light

Drowned World/Substitute for Love

Power of Goodbye

Nothing Really Matters

Was I really only 5 when it came out? I can remember Frozen so clearly from my childhood.
I was still being breast-fed! :P

I'm really hoping that you were a baby and not like, 7

Haha! I was actually expecting you to say something like that! Although I thought you would say "So was I!" :P

It's a pretty flawless album with a pretty flawless campaign to boot. I would have liked a 'Skin' release because it's pretty amazing but I can't complain with the singles they chose. I was never a fan of 'Power of Goodbye' but it did well so I wouldn't change that being a single.

I agree, that one is my favourite non-single from the album.

Drowned World didn't chart in the US because it wasn't serviced to radio there!

Fabulous album, it's pop music meets art. The run of the first nine songs is pretty unbelievably and the only two I wouldn't cherry pick are To Have And Not To Hold and Mer Girl. Everything else is heaven.

can still remember going straight from school to go and buy the album!!

sky fits heaven and mer girl are my fav tracks but i love them all, initially i loved swim to death too!

Lyrically Madonna has never been better then this , her and patrick leonard need to reunite!!!

Shanti/Ashtangi is a bit shit.

I love Shanti/Ashtangi. It lodges into your head. Like tapeworm.

My favourite to least favourite:

01. Power of Goodbye

02. Skin

03. Ray of Light

04. Frozen

05. Nothing Really Matters

06. Sky Fits Heaven

07. Drowned World/Substitute for Love

08. Swim

09. To Have and Not to Hold

10. Little Star

11. Candy Perfume Girl

12. Mer Girl

13. Shanti/Ashtangi

The Top 9 are absolutely fantastic! It was quite hard to rank these ones, as they are all brilliant in their own way! I think that Drowned World was the perfect song to be track 1, it’s probably the most calm and relaxing song on the album. With this song along with Power of Goodbye and Nothing Really Matters, I wish Madonna would perform them more on tour, as they deserve more recognition and are forgotten classics! Although for them all to reach the Top 10 from such a massive album is great! Shanti/Ashtangi is my least favourite on the album, although with most songs I don’t really like, they do get annoyingly stuck in my head!)

I remember going into HMV on my lunch break the day it was released to buy it. Agree with some of the other posters that "Skin" is a fantastic track. Always had a soft spot for "Sky Fits Heaven" too.

AMAZING album, her best for me with ease. I adore 'Sky Fits Heaven', I'd rather that was a single over 'Drowned World'.

The album is flawless aside from 'Mer Girl' and 'Shanti/Ashtangi', maybe also 'Little Star' if I'm not in the right mood.
