Basically, it seems to favour 'Radio 2' artists over 'Radio 1' ones?

Coldplay and Ed Sheeran (and to a lesser extent the other three as well) are Radio 1 favourites

That puzzles me - I would have thought Kylie's pop would be far closer to R1's remit than Coldplay's AOR?

Those artists are mainly Radio 1 artists aswell though.

It does favour "album artists" you could say, because every song you listen to from an album on most streaming sites I think counts individually to the song chart.

I agree here, but Radio 1 try and even out the genres in their playlist, and there's so many artists doing Kylie-esque music at the moment really, and Radio 1 can't playlist all of them. Since they seem to want to attract a younger audience, they'd rather use artists like Usher and Tulisa for their pop songs than Kylie I guess. Whilst Coldplay are in more of a niche at the moment, so don't have as many established artists to compete with for the playlist spots.

But would their value on the song chart be the same as listening to a song that was specifically released as a single?

I think so. Like on Spotify you just click on an album or EP and it opens then you click on the song you want to play, and that play gets counted.

Although songs released as singles still have a slight advantage in that they have EPs, which will probably get them more streams if there's good remixes on there.

a sign of things to come?

For some artists, streaming royalties > download royalties and physical CD royalties

Musicians getting 'more than half of royalty income from online streaming'

Many musicians now receive more than half of their royalty income from online services such as Spotify and Deezer, the founder of Adele’s record label has claimed.

Martin Mills, chairman of Beggars Group, said that streaming services have changed the way people listen to music, because the “friction-less” experience makes users much more likely to experiment with sampling new artists or delve into musicians’ back catalogues, and that they had given artists with substantial bodies of work a major financial boost as a result.

“Some of our catalogue artists earn more from streams than downloads of individual tracks [or] any other format,” he said.

probably the same but instead of $ it's £

It's $5 or $10 a month for USA.

£5 or £10 a month for the UK.

Around 1 million paying subscribers added in 6 months. Good news?

Spotify rise in popularity correlates with the rise in popularity of smartphone.

In Sweden, Spotify generate around 9 times more revenue than Itunes.

Well not everyone likes or buys the best-selling singles...and it kind of misses the point that people who purchase Spotify are unlikely to be buying music anyway, as well as that those are worldwide figures!
