I think I can safely say that you were never that 'fat kid' in school, then, Rob?

The utter disgust and ridicule from the other kids (and the teachers) when you're in that changing room.... ugh... I remember it well.

I totally disagree that PE should be on any school curriculum. It divides a class of kids, not unites them. The teachers are only ever interested in the kids who are willing to join the cross country teams or the rugby teams... same as in the Music classes, only kids interested in joining the bloody school orchestra are given the time of day by the teachers.

To polarise a section of kids like PE does - to make overweight kids strip off in changing rooms in front of everyone else is unnecessary, cruel and there's absolutely NO WAY on earth any child of mine would do it if he or she didn't want to.

As I stated, one hour of PE won't make fat kids slim. Some fat kids are just.... fat.

I was.... I ate exactly the same as everyone else, and outside school, ran like a rat with the best of them. But to be FORCED to strip off in communal changing rooms, and to run, swim and do gym, in front of the very kids who make your life a living hell for being fat, is just simply not on. Luckily, I lost all the weight in my teens without dieting, extra exercise... I was one of the lucky ones who didn't suffer the mid to late teenage ears as a fattie, when the abuse and torment is even greater.

of course teachers are only interested in bright pupils, pupils who are gifted in certain areas, i have no problem with teachers nurturing any talent in any area...

we are (thank god) not all the same, we are unique and should be treated as such.

bullying is bullying and shouldnt be allowed, fat, thin, ginger... unacceptable.

i was a skinny kid at school, i was useless at games, i too detested stripping off in front of my classmates as an only boy (3 sisters) i just wasnt used to it. it was easier for boys who had brothers, but what you went through.... so did i. i wasnt in the 'in' crowd, the central clique who liked footy... so like the others, i was a victim.

Ozzy...

as I said, in my experience of PE in schools, far from making the kids work as a 'team', it totally separated the kids.... the ones who 'do' and the ones who 'don't'.

There are far, far more effective ways of teambuilding within the education system.

It's open season for the bullies..... who use the PE lessons as a springboard for their bullying - helped, it has to be said, in many cases by the PE teacher him/herself.

russ.... you didnt need a sports lesson to segrigate the athletic kids from the uninterested kids. we all knew who would be good at games as they were at it in the playground. the sportshall/changing rooms did not emphisise my bullying.

the point of schools surely is to discover every childs talent, those who 'do' sports might not be the same ones who excell at maths... we aint all the same, you cant make kids all the same, we need to develop their own talents.

...and as with all talents, Rob... you've either got it...or you haven't.

A fat kid is never going to excel in gymnastics - so why prolong the agony and MAKE these poor kids do gym when all it does is ensure they're going to be ridiculed in front of the whole class and bullied for their fatness?

PE should NEVER be compulsory in ANY school. It's an excuse for barbarism of the most sickening kind - from both the teachers and the co-pupils.

The changing rooms embarrassment is one that you never, ever forget. The one time, I suppose, that being 'big' when your naked ISN'T a good thing ;)

I loathed school for this very reason and would frequently bunk off when I had PE... for the sole reason I was ashamed to strip off in front of the other lads in my class. And wilst skinny kids had a fair amount of stick - fat kids always got it worse in our school - as I've said, usually from the horrendous array of PE teachers who took no end of joy in belittling me for my size at the time.

a good teacher though could turn it into a pleasant experience, by help, encouragement and understanding that not everyone is athletic, nor should anyone be bullied . a 'fat kid' who fails but makes attempts should get praise.

But that aint the way it works though Rob is it...? You know as well as I do the 'fat kids' and the 'skinny kids' (of which I was one...) are gonna get ridiculed, picked on and certainly in no way 'praised' by the psychotic, drill-sergeant types that I had for PE teachers when I was at school....

PE lessons at school are a form of sadism, it put me off exercising for years..... It's the way that they're taught that's the problem.

I wasn't very athletic in school but I liked doing PE. I think PE should be encluicive of everyone just because you are "fat" doesn't mean you can't join in. I liked cross country when we did it, mainly because I actualy felt it got me better at running. If this is child abuse then science lessons must be!
I've never had to do it. Even though our school was a sport school people actually got to choose I think. I would have just refused because people can't force you to run lol. I hate running anyway. It's not fun.

:o Omg@that. ALSO, in your PE lessons did you ever have to make a dance routine to 'Thriller' by Michael J!?! :o

Haha I well miss cross-country </3. Because my PE teachers were safe and actually either ran along with you or stood at specific points encouraging you and hollering "GOOD PACE THERE LOVE", but more formally obviously <3. FUN.

No. We didn't do dance hardly ever.

My P.E. teacher was Frank Lampards cousin apparantly, but he wasn't very good and we just played charades. Then we had a new one who was always drunk or hungover and told us to wait down on the field but he never turned up. Then he got the sack and a different one came in. He always wore shorts, even in winter. :o
