It’s a shame that we have so many legendary artists who are under-certified because much of their sales pre 1994 aren’t recognised.

They are rounded to the nearest 10k, so they could still be a few thousand off, but still. :P

Hung Up has sold ~16,000 in 9 months (was on 584,000 in May 2012 when the best sellers of the Noughties was revealed) which means ~21,000 per year, ~1,800 per month and ~400 per week.

Have they overtaken songs in her best sellers chart ?

Hung Up hasn't as Papa Don't Preach is still way ahead of it, although I now only have a 5k gap between 4 Minutes and Vogue. However the Vogue sales figure is from 3 years ago so will have sold quite a lot more than that by now. Maybe be on 520k.

Yeah I guessed that the figures were rounded up. I'm really happy with 4 Minutes sales tho.

As for Papa Don't Preach I can't see Hung Up overtaking it anytime soon because its always beening played on radio or tv.

I'm thrilled to get precise sales! I've worked out 4 Minutes has sold at least 3k since February when its sales were given as 490k +/- 5k.
Hung would have sold a million if sold in download era, it frustrates me that Kylie, celine, Whitney, cher , Mariah (minutes away), gaga etc have all achieved this !

That's really good actually and in the last month or so it's always been on the iTunes pop singles chart.

I know so annoying, she will get there at some point.

I guess Justin Timberlake's recent success has helped 4 Minutes lots. I would love if Madonna could get a million seller, but I think it would only be with a recent single.

She actually isn't even that close to a million , into the groove is like 180,000 sales away I think ! But we all know all her sales added up put her at number 1 :)

She was also really unlucky that single sales also took a dip when like a prayer and vogue were originally released !!

And with Hung Up (and 4 Minutes too but I don't think it would have passed one million). Coulda, shoulda, woulda

Just checked out the sales vault on this forum, into the groove is the 189th best selling single in the uk with sales of 870,000

I suppose it will be out of the Top 200 in a year or two. Someone needs to perform this on a TV talent show to get it past 900k!

From the OCC Report on Justin Timberlake's Best Selling Singles:

While his album output might be a little on the scarce side, he’s been popping up all over the place on the Official Singles Chart as a featured artist. Some of his biggest successes have been as a guest star, with his best-performing outing being the 2008 smash 4 Minutes with the mighty Madonna, notching up almost 500,000 copies in the UK and hitting the Number 1 spot all over the world. So far, 4 Minutes is Madonna’s biggest-selling digital download.

BPI sales certification to be automated

by Tina Hart

Friday July 19 2013

The BPI’s Certified Awards Scheme is to include auto-updated sales data for the first time.

The scheme forms the official recognition of artist achievement in respect of UK sales of albums, singles and music DVDs/Blu-rays, and the basis on which the industry’s Silver, Gold and Platinum/Multi-Platinum discs are presented.

Previously, BPI waited for official notification from its label members of a title’s sales performance based on shipment deliveries, but from today (Friday, July 19) the awards will automatically recognise the popularity of artist releases as soon as they go past relevant sales thresholds, in-line with Official Charts Company data.

This new approach aims to improve the integrity of the awards scheme, making it instantly more up-to-date and accurate across all formats. BPI members will, however, retain the option of notifying the trade body’s Rob Crutchley of their new release shipment deliveries, thus ensuring the scheme remains a flexible one that enables the success of titles to be recognised at the earliest possible opportunity if required.

Also, Non-BPI members will now be able to participate in the Awards Scheme for the first time.

As part of this ‘auto-updating’ process, which is based on data stretching back to 1994 when the Official Charts Company was established, sales certifications for a number of titles have been retrospectively updated:

Included in the list of newly-certified albums are the likes of Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon, Rita Ora’s Rita Ora and Little Mix’s DNA – which are recognised for achieving over 300,000 sales to attain Platinum status, while Susan Boyle’s 2010 smash The Gift is acknowledged as going Double Platinum for its 600,000-plus sales.

A number of albums, such as Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox and Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, have been given an updated category certification – moving from Gold (100,000 copies) to Double Platinum (600,000 copies) status.

In relation to singles, releases that are certified for the first time include the world’s best-selling title of 2012 – Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe, which has its Double Platinum status (1.2 million-plus sales) confirmed.

Among the Music DVDs/Blu-rays being acknowledged with a certification is the record-breaking 2009 video release Take That Presents: The Circus Live, which is recognised for going x11 Platinum (550,000-plus sales).

These changes form part of a wider and ongoing review of how artist achievements in sales should be acknowledged and celebrated going forward, and further announcements will made in due course.

That's very good news! '4 Minutes' and 'Hung Up' are in particular in need of receiving Gold and Platinum certifications respectively. I'm not sure if this means her songs from the 80s will be updated with the certifications used today (so that 'Into the Groove' will be Platinum, which would mean 1m+ sales at the time.)

Every interesting I can't wait to see what this does for her back catalogue.

According to British Phonographic Industry (BPI), Madonna is the most certified artist of all time in United Kingdom, with 45 awards
