May 4, 201213 yr I understand your point but sales are just one factor of a song being a hit... If the sales climate is healthy, a song can achieve 3 million downloads without being a hit that everyone will remember. There have been songs that were never released as commercial singles at the time but are still career-defining hits. (Nelly's Dilemma for example) GYC will probably remain bigger airplay success than WMYB but which one will be better remembered? Too early to tell. Edited May 4, 201213 yr by SKOB
May 4, 201213 yr Crew Love is just high on downloads and streaming really. I think he should certainly promote it after HYFR. Airplay hasn't been "amplified" has it? I agree about the streaming though, it's certainly going to make the chart even slower than it was before!! That's probably the most annoying thing about it for me, even though I do like that it boosts all of Drake and Lil Wayne's songs 10 places in the chart each week. Yeah, airplay share has become a lot higher since the new Billboard chart rules.... And the most annoying thing about the new chart rules is the current flow of Drake and Lil Wayne songs tbh....

I didn't say that WMYB is a hit, I just think that WMYB will have more sales than GYC. Of course I understand your point of view, but imho fact that 1D will achieve it with much less airplay than TW is even more impressive. And considering album sale 1D will be better remembered .
May 4, 201213 yr Because he's a spammer  Yes I just realised that myself tbh  Back on topic, GYC is definitely bigger than WMYB IMO. Even if GYC was released a little earlier, it's first couple of weeks didn't even sell that much whereas WMYB debuted high.
May 4, 201213 yr What's the point comparing The Wanted with 1D. Both acts have had incredible success in the States. End of!
May 4, 201213 yr Back on topic, GYC is definitely bigger than WMYB IMO. Even if GYC was released a little earlier, it's first couple of weeks didn't even sell that much whereas WMYB debuted high. According to wikipedia GYC was released 18th October, and WMYB was released 14th February, it's 4 month... I think it's obvious for everyone that 1D will sell more than GYC in next 4th month.
May 4, 201213 yr Yeah, airplay share has become a lot higher since the new Billboard chart rules.... The airplay share hasn't risen, it's just that she sales share has fallen, and by a rather small amount too.
May 4, 201213 yr The airplay share hasn't risen, it's just that she sales share has fallen, and by a rather small amount too. Yeah, that's what I thought. Airplay contributes the same as it did before. Its share has been increased in comparison to downloads, but not overall.

GYC didn't even properly kick off until early this year, so you're comparing sales of <10k in GYC's early weeks whereas 1D was a big debut.
May 5, 201213 yr GYC didn't even properly kick off until early this year, so you're comparing sales of <10k in GYC's early weeks whereas 1D was a big debut. So you just prove that WMYB sold more copies without any promotion than GYC... For me it's prove that WMYB is better. But if you want we can compare their sale after they start promote it. GYC for the first time was performed on Ellen 10th January, and WMYB for the first time was performed on the Today Show 12nd March. It's 9 weeks. After the promotion has begun WMYB sold around 1.35 mln and GYC 2.15 mln. So WMYB have to sale 0.8 mln in 9 weeks, they shouldn't have any problem with that. Since 10th January we have 17 weeks, so TW sold 126 k per week, since 12nd March we have 8 weeks, so 1D sold 168. k per week, in all their weeks of sale 1D sold 158 k per week. Biggest week: 1D 294k TW 209 k. Sorry but there's no chance to prove that GYC has a better sale. Edited May 5, 201213 yr by Tommy

If you want to do from when a song is promoted, the best time to look is when they started getting significant radio airplay. A one off performance doesn't really mean anything, just a temporary boost for like a day.

A one off performance doesn't really mean anything, just a temporary boost for like a day. How many airplays you have to have to get ,,significant radio airplays'' ? 1D are in TOP 20 since 20th April, and TW since 1st March TW had 10 mln 19th January, 19th February they had 42 mln, 19th march 94 mln 19 th april 147 mln 1D had 10 mln 9th March, 9 th April they had 52 mln, and judging on fact that they had 85 mln yesterday, they have a chance to have more than 94 mln at 9 th May.
May 5, 201213 yr They've both been big hits. That's all that needs to be said... getting technical about dates and which band achieved what more quickly is a bit... whatever. Lol.
May 5, 201213 yr GYC was clearly more successful on the radio; One Direction are obviously more successful overall.

I don't know what "significant radio airplays" is really. I just meant pick a value (e.g. 10 million), and count from then if we want to exclude trickle sales from before. I do agree with you about which one has been "bigger" though. Just I think going from the first time they performed it live is a bit strange. Many big hits never have high profile live performances, or only get their first live performance after they've already peaked.
