How do you feel about some of them being filmed in monochrome?

Personally, it irritates me. I mean - come on, this isn't the 1950's!

No preference, really. If it's used, it's used, it can have effect.

Which videos are you talking about, specifically? Because right now, I can't think of a single monochromatic video, except for You Da One, which hardly counts as a prominent example, does it?

OH WAIT... I forgot about 212. Now that's a video that benefits hugely from its monochromatism. It's an amazing video but monochrome makes it really simple to play around with, which combined with good camera angles, makes for a stunning video and the BEST one (and I'm not even hyperboling here) I've seen in the last 6 months. It also gives Azealia a very iconic image and presence in the video.

2nd choice. I don't mind monochrome for effect (like 'Blue Jeans' and '212' for example). To be honest though, I don't know or remember a video that I wish it was coloured instead or think the monochrome was not needed.

Not really a preference really, colour is better but i don't mind monochrome. I suppose it gives the video a more arty look.

Well, the video that prompted the question was RiRi's 'Where Have You Been' (and yes, before you mention it, I know there are short sections in colour), but I was also thinking of Lana's 'Blue Jeans', and Robbie's 'Angels'.

To me though, 'arty' just means 'too tight to fork out for colour film'. :P

I wouldn't have said anything further, but pretty much the whole damn video's in colour there (aside from one of the many sub-themes that's done in sepia). Short sections of monochrome, more than anything. Again, that's used for effect to bridge the more elaborate colour scenes. And I think a LOT was spent on that particular video.

Blue Jeans is a much better example. But still, that looks like it was filmed in 2012, not 1952, so I don't have a problem here.

Videos aren't filmed on film strips any more, I'd imagine...

I went for the second option. Adele's "Someone Like You" would be nowhere near as good in colour, and the videos for Beyoncé I Am... Sasha Fierce album all worked well together as a collection in black and white.

If it's for artistic merit, why the hell not. Same as black and white photography or feature films.
Would you have liked The Artist better if it was in colour?
I don't mind monochrome ('212' is the example of GREAT using of it) but it is often used in teary hyped up (and often generic) ballads full of pathos. It's really uninspired and non-existent.

I didn't even know what that *was*, offhand!

Perhaps a better question might be - would any of the b/w videos have been less effective in selling their songs, if they had been in colour?

IMO, no.
