May 18, 201213 yr Would it be ungrateful to ask him why it took his so long to come to this decision? Has he not had gay friends in the past? Has he really just started supporting it - in his own mind - or is this just the first time he was courageous enough to speak about it. He previously showed support for it in 1996 when he was running for the US Senate. In 1998 he changed his view so that he favoured civil partnerships, not full marriage. In his Audacity of Hope book in 2006, he said that he thought marriage was between a marriage between a man and a woman, and continued to affirm so throughout his Presidential campaign. There's a great article on his changing views on the wonderful Politifact website that goes into it in more detail.

June 8, 201213 yr I'm glad obama finally openly supports this. But it was a pretty strategic timing, he's just trying to pick up votes Considering what just happened in Wisconsin the other night, this is a slightly more ethical and legitimate way of picking up votes than what amounted to basically buying the election with torrents of completely negative propaganda and lies masquerading as campaign ads and "info-mercials"...
