Posted May 23, 201213 yr Baz Luhrmann + Leo DiCaprio + Tobey Maguire + Carey Mulligan + Isla Fisher + hot CGI = potential brilliance... TW3MQQcyY6U
May 23, 201213 yr Looks fantastic! I've not read the book, but my friend has (and enjoyed it), so I'm going to make sure I read that before seeing this... Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet is one of my favourite films ever, so I have high hopes for this too!
September 21, 201212 yr Looks absolutely horrible. I don't even care about the book too so this isn't like a "books are sacred and movies cant compare" opinion or w/e I remember first watching the trailer and just genuinely being in shock about how bad it was and then did sum research and found out it was directed by the guy who did Moulin Rouge, and it all made sense I guess there are some okay actors in it so who knows but what a god awful trailer tho like who okayed this trailer :S LOL no church in the wild really???

April 5, 201312 yr Has anyone seen the trailer to this in 3D? Looks absolutely BREATHTAKING. Seriously. I'm really not that big on 3D ('Avatar' made me feel ill), but this just looks mesmerizing. Looking forward to downloading the soundtrack too, I guess. Overrated & overplayed artists, central though! :\
April 23, 201312 yr The Great Gatsby was one of my favorite books. The trailer seems ok...... hopefully it will be better though... No movie can really do any book justice.
May 20, 201312 yr I love the book. I didn't love the movie. It was so over the top and for me destroyed any charming subtlety that the book possessed. Some of the visuals actually reminded me of a Disney movie with their theatrics, especially the fireworks and slow motion when we first meet Gatsby, I was almost cringing. The character of Nick is entirely miscast and the flashbacks to him writing feel weird and disrupt the flow of the movie - they may have worked in the novel but for the cinema I feel as though they could have easily had him just as a narrative voice, with his thoughts, rather than flashing back to his typing. As for the music, that was probably the worst part of this, Jay Z & Kanye West at the party just didn't work at all and felt so out of place and really ruined the atmosphere that they were so trying to convey. It did have some redeeming features, Leonardo was a good Gatsby and it did have poignant moments, although I would expect so when the novel depicts them so greatly, however, overall, for one of my most anticipated movie releases this was an utter disappointing.
May 28, 201312 yr I really enjoyed this! I was slightly worried after I read the book just hours before seeing it, and wondering how the hell they'd make a film out of it, but I think it worked very well - the scenes between Gatsby and Daisy were obvious highlights (especially with the Lana Del Rey song - I really want to hear the full jazz version - in fact, all of the music was great I thought!), and then obviously the ending too. Nick and Tom were miscast I felt, and Myrtle was underused, but apart from that the cast was very strong. Obviously it's designed to be more of a blockbuster than a love story, but I do think it worked well with all the theatrics anyway.
May 30, 201312 yr I think this is one of the best films I've seen in a while. I absolutely love Leo in it and the use of Lana's song is perfect. Makes me tear up every time. Baz's direction is brilliant too. I love the subtlety of the effects and shots he uses. Obviously everything in this was going to be so much more extravagant and over the top, I mean it IS Baz Luhrmann. I've also had the chance to watch it in 2D and 3D and it's the first film I've seen that I actually prefer in 3D. (Life of Pi fans will probably stone me to death but I didn't get the chance to watch it)
June 5, 201312 yr Lets preface this by saying that Ive never read the book. I found Nick entirely sympathetic; he was the only real sympathetic character in the thing, and also the only one to which nothing dramatic really happens, which left me basically not caring at all about the story - the only character I cared about was the narrator, and hes just kind of being there the whole time, not doing anything. Even not having read it, I did get that theyd obviously misplayed Daisys character - she felt like she had no agency at all, and was fairly honest most of the time, so I couldnt understand how one could describe her as responsible for her own destruction. Was Gatsby meant to be a protagonist? Because I disliked him almost as much as, if not more than, I disliked Tom. He was a deluded, obsessive con artist, and seemed like he had possibly even fewer moral qualms than the obviously detestable bad guy. The visuals at the parties were awesome, although I wasnt sure about the anachronistic music and choreography choices. I think Id prefer to have seen it played more straight, with period music, at the very least.
