Posted May 23, 201213 yr Top Of The Pops returns… as live production Source: MW 23 May, 2012 Top Of The Pops is to be resurrected in the form of ‘Top Of The Pops LIVE’ - a theatre production that will embark on an “extensive” UK tour from October 18 this year. BBC Worldwide has signed a licensing deal with Flying Entertainment aiming to “capture the spirit of the iconic TV show” in the production, which premieres at the Congress Theatre in Eastbourne on October 18-20. Produced in association with Derek Nicol and Paul Walden – producers of stage hit Thriller Live – and director/choreographer Gary Lloyd, Top Of The Pops LIVE will feature a cast of singers and dancers backed by a live band along with material from the BBC’s Top Of The Pops TV vaults. Celebrating the greatest hits by the biggest stars in the world of pop from the 70s, 80s and 90s, the show will offer songs from TRex and David Bowie, to Blondie and Adam & The Ants, Duran Duran and Madonna, to Oasis and Blur. During the show, Top of the Pops LIVE will screen vintage Top of the Pops chart footage before hosting a chart rundown covering three decades. Audiences on the night get to pick which song – from a list of list of five classic hits – will feature in the show’s finale. “We are delighted to have signed a licensing deal with Flying Entertainment and look forward to working with them on Top of the Pops LIVE,” said commercial director, Audio & Music BBC Worldwide Dominic Walker. Derek Nicol, producer and joint managing director of Flying Entertainment added: “I am delighted to be working with BBC Worldwide and Director Gary Lloyd on one of the UK’s most iconic brands. “Like most people, I have nothing but fantastic memories of Top of the Pops and I look forward to delivering a great live show to audiences throughout the country, reflecting the great music that, through Top of the Pops, became the soundtrack to many of our lives.” Director/choreographer Gary Lloyd added: “Bringing Top of the Pops to the stage has been an exciting process. With today's technology and using all of the iconic moments Top of the Pops brings, this show will excite audiences old and new. “As a music lover who grew up following the charts with Top of the Pops as the highlight of the week, this is a dream show to work on. I am very much looking forward to getting it out there to all those people who did the same and taking them on a rockin’ journey down memory lane.”
May 23, 201213 yr Just put it back on TV before The Voice already. Don't let it be bogged down by the weekly chart. Do the chart rundown but take a lesson from Radio One and focus on live performances, exclusive cover versions and premieres of new material
May 23, 201213 yr Can they please just bring it back properly already and stop all of this 'return in a different form' nonsense.
May 23, 201213 yr Exactly, there clearly is still demand (it gets rather solid ratings at Christmas/New Years) so I think the time is right to bring it back, any form of promotion is good for the acts and it could well influence the charts come sunday
May 23, 201213 yr Exactly, there clearly is still demand (it gets rather solid ratings at Christmas/New Years) so I think the time is right to bring it back, any form of promotion is good for the acts and it could well influence the charts come sunday I agree with the last two points you made, and the BBC probably agree with that aswell, but I don't think they're going to bring back a TV show because it'll shake up the charts. They'll want ratings, and I don't think many people would watch it tbh.
May 23, 201213 yr I agree with the last two points you made, and the BBC probably agree with that aswell, but I don't think they're going to bring back a TV show because it'll shake up the charts. They'll want ratings, and I don't think many people would watch it tbh. Using that logic then we would have pretty much nothing interesting or new on television. Just endless reality shows as they're "guaranteed" rating winners. It's called taking a risk. However, TOTP will always have to this generation is the power of its name which will always make people curious to check out the relaunch, and if they are significantly impressed with it then who knows how it could take off from there. Obviously it wouldn't do very well if they bought it back exactly like it was before. They have to bring in a unique selling point (some of the things that Paramore could be possibilities) and put some effort in, rather than the low budget, hastily put together affair that the Xmas special comes across as. And find some presenters with good chemistry that people can connect with. Of course, all this would require both forward-thinking and money, and these are the main two reasons why I won't hold my breath for a proper return any time soon.
