Moyes certainly seems to be the clear favourite at the moment. Just as long as that doesn't mean Laudrup goes to Everton and Swansea start knocking on Gus Poyet's door.

Yep it seems likely to be Moyes now

Interested to see how he'll deal with no longer being the "underdog", which he seems to have thrived on over the years

I guess it makes sense though since Fergie will still be at the club as a director. They'd want someone like Moyes, who could be moulded rather than Mourinho who would want full control

I could see Everton going for Martinez

Moyes is one of the best managers in the premiership, he deserves a job as high up as Man United, it's unbelievable how he's managed to change Everton from a relegation team into a team that are constantly fighting for top 4 off an incredibly limited budget.

David Moyes 1/3

Jose Mourinho 11/4

Jurgen Klopp 16/1

Ole Gunner Solskjaer 25/1

Robertino Martinez 25/1

Ryan Giggs 25/1

Martinez was another name who sprung to mind for Everton. At least Wigan - particularly if they are relegated and Brighton win the play-offs - would be a less attractive prospect for Poyet than a team playing in the Europa League next season.

Brilliant manager, but I could have sworn that he mentioned another 3 years recently? Perhaps the need for the hip surgery became more pressing.
Watch this space, david moyes and phil neville to work together at man u. Know a kid whos dad did an interview with fergie for the newspaper.
If Moyes does take over then Rooney's just gonna LOVE that! He'll be off like it or not

Ignoring that Wigan will as well :P

Such short odds on Moyes - I'd call him the favourite but if I were the Glazers I'd be buttering up Klopp. Stuck to the United policy of bringing youngsters through and has taken them to the biggest stage possible.

I'm assuming that the next time both this and the England job become vacant Gary Neville will be the favourite.

Im gonna miss Sir Alex Ferguson so much, he's been the manager of Man Utd for my whole life and it will be weird to see someone else in charge. He changed the way football is played in Britain and the rest of the world and will never be forgotten. I wish him good luck for the future and thanks for all the memories.

I think the need for major surgery and the fact that Manchester United have just won the title again off their neighbors means he'll go out on a high. The guy rightly has a massive ego, and it's a good way for his career to end.

Very influential domestically, but his European record is shocking. Massive loss to Manchester United.

Moyes looks set to be manager. I'll be interested to see how this works out. There's no doubt he's done well at Everton, although they're nowhere near as skint and poor as Everton, and the media will have you believe. I'm not sure he's Manchester United material though. The guy is a grade A bottlejab. His record against the big teams is atrocious. It will be interesting to see whether he abandons his morals and goes for the wins, instead of settling for draws.

I fully expect Fellaini to be Manchester United player next season, and Wayne Rooney to be out of sight.

Am I alone in wondering whether Ferguson told Moyes some time ago that he was expecting to retire at the end of the season? That would explain why he hasn't signed a new contract.

It looks like this year's SPOTY Lifetime Achievement Award has now been decided.

I'm pretty sure there's a gentleman's agreement between the two. It explains the reluctance for Moyes to sign a new contract, and Moyes has always been the preferred choice by Fergie. This is an Alex Ferguson decision, not one made by the board.

It's certainly one with the long-term in mind. Mourinho wouldn't have been a brilliant appointment. However I'm yet to be convinced by Moyes. Not sure the Manchester United fans know what they're getting. Certainly not a tactical genius, nor a great attacking flair coach. I think he'll do alright, but I'm already expecting Man Utd to not retain the title next season, just on gut instinct.

I don't think this appointment makes us 2nd or 3rd favourites next year for the title. We will rightly be favourites and I believe whoever takes over (be it Moyes, who I don't rate) we will win the league again.

Rooney will stay, despite his spat with Moyes.

Mate if you play how Moyes usually plays, you've no chance of winning the league. There'll be too many draws. He's an utter bottlejab.

Will be an interesting summer as always!

Four CL finals says different, not many who can claim that.

I'm yet to be convinced by Moyes, Klopp would have been perfect - I'd take Kuba and Gundogan over Fellaini any day.

In 26 years. In the period where Man Utd and Arsenal dominated football in England their record in European football was terrible. England dominated European football from 2005-2010, so no surprise he racked up final appearances then, as did Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Got a feeling Klopp will stay at Dortumund a little while longer yet. Guess he might take over one of the Spanish sides, or maybe Arsenal eventually.

It's still a formidable record compared to any European manager of the era and any domestic manager ever.

That period you mentioned included three finals, one won against the (other) best team in Europe at the time and the other two lost to possibly the best club side ever.

By your standards pretty much everyone would have an abysmal European record.

It's only formidable because if memory serves me correct, Arsene Wenger aside, at any of the big clubs no manager has stayed there for much longer then 5 years. Both times against Barcelona, Manchester United were utterly outclassed. There's no shame in losing to Barcelona.

But 4 in 26 years, and since they've pretty much dominated English football for the past 20 years, 4 finals is a good return, but it should be much better. In 26 years he's had as many diabolical campaigns in Europe as he has good ones. Most people seem to blank these from their memory.
