The stars who have bagged the biggest pay cheques

On the cover of her new single 'Triumphant', Mariah Carey is depicted in golden hues as if she's radiating the precious shimmering element from her very being.

That image, as well as the track title, are nice, aptly timed metaphors for the singer's recent good fortune, having signed an eye-watering deal to be the new judge on the reality talent show 'American Idol'.

'Idol' boss Simon Cowell has agreed to pay the 42-year-old almost $18m (€14m) for one series of the show, making Carey the highest-paid talent-show judge in showbiz -- apart from Cowell himself, of course.

Carey is excited about the deal, as you would be. "It's gonna be so much fun working on American Idol," she tweeted following the announcement.

"As a singer-songwriter, I'm excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM!"

Fittingly enough, one of the interpretations of the acronym at the end of that tweet is 'Love You Millions', a sentiment that Carey may well exclaim the next time she logs in to her online banking.

It's an insane amount of money that even trumps that of Britney Spears, who, earlier this year, signed a deal worth $15m (€12m) to be a judge on the next series of another of Cowell's troubled karaoke behemoths, 'The X Factor USA'.

The two deals are, of course, connected in other more important ways than just the mobile-phone-number-length figures involved.

It's not as if Carey and Spears are at the peak of their careers. Neither one could claim to have had anything approaching a zeitgeist-attuned album or mega-hit single in quite a few years.

They're both established acts, for sure, but if name recognition was the sole criteria for being hired on either show, Cowell could have opted for the likes of Aretha Franklin, who, by all accounts, was positively begging to take over on the 'Idol' panel.

No, what Carey and Spears bring to proceedings is 'colour' -- or, to phrase it rather more indelicately, 'craziness'.

As with most things in the Cowell employment universe, there's an (un)healthy strain of cynicism, voyeurism and exploitation underpinning both job hires.

Carey and Spears both have unpredictable temperaments these days. Both have endured considerable personal and professional problems in their time and, consequently, are now deemed eccentrics in the pop world.

In Carey's case, one need look no further than her car-crash appearance on the American Home Shopping Network last year, in which she struggled to find the right camera, talked randomly -- and at length -- about her pregnancy, barked orders at the crew and failed to muster anything resembling enthusiasm for her own lines of jewellery and fragrances.

Cowell is presumably hoping that both women will bring an erratic edge to two reality shows that, in their previous series, showed very serious signs of diminishing returns -- a particularly worrisome development for 'The X Factor USA' seeing as it was its first season.

Will people tune in especially to see if Carey and Spears throw diva strops, utter streams of bizarre non-sequiturs and adopt ratings-baiting mercurial 'good cop bad cop' attitudes towards the wailing contestants on stage?

That remains to be seen, but clearly Cowell reckons that the gamble is worth tens of millions.

Still, at least Cowell's punt isn't as high risk as the one that record company EMI took on Robbie Williams back in 2002.

At the time, the then 28-year-old Williams landed Britain's biggest ever record deal when he secured an £80m (€100m) contract for four albums.

"I am rich beyond my wildest dreams," he proclaimed at the time, and set off for LA with dreams -- specific contractual dreams at that -- of breaking the difficult US market.

It's believed that the deal included £10m (€12m) upfront, £15m (€19m) on completion of the first record, and £55m (€70m) for the remaining three albums.

The massive payout seemed like a no-brainer a decade ago. Williams was the biggest pop star in Britain, and had sold more than 10 million albums as a solo singer. There was no reason to believe that Williams would be anything but a licence to print money for years to come.

The signs initially looked good: the first album released under the deal, 'Escapology', sold more than two million copies in this part of the world, but, crucially, failed to gain traction in America.

Indeed, Williams wasn't to release another album in the US for seven years.

While Williams never experienced a dramatic crash and burn, and his next few albums continued to sell well into their millions, the public interest in, and buzz about him, began to wane around the mid-Noughties.

There was an increased focus on the singer's personal life, fuelled in large part by his often uncomfortably candid interviews with the press.

Increasingly, the image of him as damaged, unhappy and chronically insecure supplanted the existing one of him as a world-class entertainer.

The past few years have seen Williams drifting in and out of his former band Take That and working on further solo material -- and suffering the ignominy of losing the chart battle to 'X Factor' runners-up JLS.

Has all of that been worth £80m? What kind of return did -- could -- EMI ever make on that investment?

We'll likely never really know, as the company experienced severe financial problems in the years following that deal, owing in large part to the global downturn and the flourishing of illegal downloading.

At any rate, why should Williams care? His money was made. Sensing which way the wind was blowing, he switched labels to Universal two years ago for an undisclosed sum.

What Carey, Spears and Williams's careers reveal is that in showbiz, as in sport, there is always potential for a lucky -- or brazen -- celebrity to strike gold in just one deal.

Some Hollywood stars have been particularly blessed in this regard. There were certainly no flies on Jack Nicholson when he was negotiating his contract to play the Joker in Tim Burton's 'Batman' back in the late 1980s. In addition to his salary -- which would have been around $5m-$6m (€4m-€5m) -- Nicholson demanded a cut of the film's profits.

So when 'Batman' then became one of the highest-grossing films of the decade, Nicholson walked off with an overall pay cheque of an astounding $60m (€50m), the highest ever at the time.

Johnny Depp then did one better when he climbed aboard the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies in 2003, a franchise that, to date, has grossed some $3.7bn (€3bn) worldwide.

Having been paid $35m (€29m) upfront for the sequel 'On Stranger Tides', it emerged that Depp had also secured rights to a share of the franchise's profits, reportedly boosting his overall earnings from the four movies to a mind-boggling $350m (€287m).

And, providing yet another sign that we truly are living in the 'End of Days', the ghastly Kardashian clan will earn $40m (€33m) for the next three series of their reality show, 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians', not including any additional earnings from product endorsements and cash-cow short-lived marriages -- we're looking at you, Kim.

Still, it might come as some comfort to know that not all entertainers can be as easily bought as others.

At the turn of the millennium, ABBA reportedly turned down a $1bn offer to reunite for a series of concerts.

"We decided it wasn't for us," the band's Benny Andersson said at the time, proving them to be the rare exception to the showbiz rule that it's always about the money, money, money.

Robbie entertains with his sharp new fashion range

Robbie Williams certainly hits the high notes when it comes to his fashion vision for smart young men.

The Take That singer packs sharp tailoring in the style arsenal of his Farrell fashion range, named after his grandfather Jack Farrell, a notable dresser in Williams' hometown of Stoke-on-Trent.

Exclusive to BT2 in Ireland, the Farrell menswear collection was in absolutely no danger of being ignored amid the frock fabulosity of the BT2 autumn/winter fashion preview in Dublin yesterday.

The girlies are well catered for with a huge assortment of dresses and it really was a case of Vive la France as a string of French labels like Eyedoll, Maje, Iro, Etoile Isabel Marant, Sandro and The Kooples commanded attention in the runway show,

However, just like his beguiling voice, Robbie William's Farrell range made a lasting impression, in particular, the well cut navy wool overcoat (€395) with natty black velvet- trimmed collar.

The snazzy spotty scarf (€40) was also the kind of accessory that no girlfriend should ever think twice about borrowing -- on a permanent basis. Same goes for the Farrell collarless grandfather shirts costing €100.

Farrell is one of the nine new menswear brands to BT2's stores in Grafton Street, Dundrum and Blanchardstown.

According to their new menswear buyer Ian Kelly (28), "the brands are a lot more premium and fashion forward in direction."

A dozen dresses priced from €165 upwards vied for the Dress of The Day award. For affordability coupled with impact, the botanical print shift dress from Ted Baker (€165) was a winner while the navy cape dress from Maje (€220) captured elements of Tom Ford's cape dress that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to this year's Oscars.

But it fell to the king of French couture, Karl Lagerfeld to close the show with a dress that sent us all scrambling for details of the price.

Lagerfeld's affordable diffusion collection 'Karl' had mixed reviews last season, but for autumn/ winter, he certainly delivers.

The mohair jumper with tulle sleeves (€230) is high- octane rock chic but the real star was the black dress with a high-low hemline and sunray pleating (€500) -- and you can add a bejeweled collar for €160.

Robbie to play Dublin gig next month??

Reports this morning suggest that pop superstar Robbie Williams is set to play a gig in Dublin next month.

Robbie promised fans after last years Take That concert in Croke Park that he would return to Ireland to play a free gig. It’s believed that the gig won’t actually be ”free” but that all proceeds will go to charity.

It’s rumoured the gig could take place at the O2 in Dublin on Friday September 14th. An announcement either way is expected next week.

Robbie Williams is reportedly set to buy White Rock Island, California, with plans to turn it into a base for spotting UFOs.

The former Take That singer is apparently planning to build a luxury private resort on the 1.3 acre island – which is currently owned by Hollywood movie director Michael Caffrey – so he and his wife Ayda can stay there and spot UFOs, reports Examiner.com.

Williams first visited White Rock Island last year and found it to be a perfect location for UFO spotting, with minimal light pollution and a clear, unobstructed view of the night sky.

The singer has said that he has seen UFOs before, and is reportedly willing to pay $659,000 (£414,778) for White Rock Island.

Meanwhile, Williams is set to release a brand new solo album this autumn. 'Take The Crown' will come out on November 5. His ninth studio LP was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jacknife Lee and will be preceded by the single 'Candy', on October 29.
