July 22, 201212 yr The combination of Moan winning BJSC and the latest CDSWAP has made me dig out my old Progression playlist from ChC, I think it's my favourite one I've ever entered. Dreamy late night beats and my first proper attempt at mixing the playlist into a seamless whole - sort of my own version of a Late Night Tales compilation that were so reasonably popular at the time. First time I've listened for a couple of years, happy memories and I'm still loving it now. ^_^ 01 : Trentemøller : Take Me Into Your Skin 06:26 02 : Djuma Soundsystem : Les Djinns 04:12 03 : Trentemøller / Ane Trolle : Moan / Vocal 06:10 04 : The Raveonettes / Trentemøller : Lust / Lost 04:34 05 : Shpongle : Dorset Perception 06:21 06 : M83 : Couleurs 05:49 07 : UNKLE / Petter : These Days / What Are You To Me 05:41 08 : Kirsty Hawkshaw / Holden : Fine Day / Fine Beats 05:52 09 : Doves / Sasha : Jetstream / Jetdreams 06:18 10 : Delerium / Space Manouevres / UNKLE : Silence / Stage One / Preliminary State 09:05 11 : UNKLE / Graham Gouldman : In a State 07:47 12 : Sasha / Maria : Be As One 10:09 Although darn you whoever received it as they hated it and I was absolutely gutted at the time (can't recall who it was now, don't think they made the switch over and were permanently lost in the ChC meltdown... serves them right!) Perhaps we could have a general chit chat about favourite playlists etc while we're waiting for more reviews?!!!
July 22, 201212 yr Of the 6(?) I've received the one my favourite is probably this one I'm yet to review. No idea about sent though, I've no idea what my best sent would be, can't remember anything that I put on any of them! I shall be posting my review of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik later in the week, it comes with the instruction that it's best listened to at night so I have been but not had much chance recently, only in work two days this week though so shall get more chance.
July 23, 201212 yr Author Oh and Ben I am LOVING your disc. A few I already knew but they all work so well together.[/playlistenvy] I'm glad!! I've downloaded yours and can't wait to listen. I just need to review the CD I actually have first. Such a bad host.

July 23, 201212 yr That looks really good. Do you use itunes? If so, happy to send you over a copy - I do think you'd probably like it actually.
July 23, 201212 yr What is this 'Jetdreams' remix thing? I've never heard of it before, 'Jetstream' is one of my favourite Doves songs.
July 23, 201212 yr It's a remix of it... more like a Chemical Brothers track. Works really well in my opinion (although I would say that I guess)
July 23, 201212 yr OK, this seems to work. I'll post it in two halfs, Please delete the three posts above, I'm not spamming, something went wrong there! 'Horizons' - A Review Blurb: "I called this playlist 'Horizons', which is the name of the building in the artwork (I took the photo myself), and it is considered a 'landmark' in the city I used to live in. I called it this because the photo was taken on a long walk in the rain to the city centre one evening with a few mates a couple of days before we all went our separate ways and I think this is reflected in the 'mood' on this playlist. I think there are some songs that you'll already know, but I hope you enjoy this anyway. It's been fun making this and has brought back some good memories. Enjoy! =) " I'm not sure what this person intended with the music, but to me, the music formed a sort of story about the emotions going through when leaving home/loved ones and actually fitted together really well. I'll describe it as I go (please note, I'm sure you didn't have the same intention, so when I describe 'the protagonist', I by no means am referring to you!) Track 1: So for a start we have a piano instrumental, and that's it. Its almost like the opening for Someone Like You, but does sound a lot darker (and quite obviously isn't that!), it starts to speed up halfway through and generally gets faster and faster, until a sort of siren like noise can be heard at the end, before coming to an abrupt finish. I almost imagine it to be the opening of this film, in which no dialogue is really needed, its quite dark and sets the tone well. 7/10 Track 2: More piano, this is far more sinister and has soft violins in the background, there is no vocals but a faint sound of a vocal sample and humming of a female, I like it much more than the intro and think at this stage in the story, we would be getting an insight into the protagonists mind, possibly when walking through the rain, reflecting doubt. 8/10 Track 3: Now we come to our first vocal track - its a female, it starts out quiet and then erupts into a hushed but dramatic vocal about how far away she is going and something about 'bonfires', It reminds me of someone, but I'm not sure who. Its very angry, confused & sad, and possibly reflects the fears of the protagonist while the rain still pours down harder, there's also a solo after her chorus that sounds like a saxophone accompanied by thrashing guitars & sad violins, I really like it. 8/10 Track 4: This has got a slightly mad feel to it, a lot going on, the female's vocals sound slightly drawn out and mysterious, she seems to be singing about selfish love and how no one's there to hold her hand. I think it would further delve deep into the character's mind, maybe he thinks he's being selfish and blocking out all aspirations. The rain still pounding down. it wasn't one of my favourites, but its still very good. 7/10 Track 5: This is a lot calmer, its held by a constant 'na na na na' hook, but it sounds very Laura Marling-esque. The lyrics are quite dark, talking about a monster on the...something, can't tell what she's saying. she says about how you shouldn't 'let them get you' so maybe this is a call to the world and how its moving them in places they don't want to go, I sense the rain has calmed down a little bit. As for my opinion, I have listened to Laura Marling's album and liked it, this reminds me of her so I like it quite a bit. 8/10 Track 6: This is a rap song, sung by a female rapper and it ain't Nicki Minaj! its a very bluesy affair, saxophone solo's occuring after every chorus line. Its not normally my sort of thing, but I like this, brilliant mood going on throughout the track. It may be Speech Debelle, although I haven't heard any of her music, it sounds like a call out to independence and how they will always keep going on to me. The lyrics 'the sun will rise without fail...even if you only get a little bit, work with it'. it has a positive message ringing out and I think the character is slowly coming to terms with moving, like a talk with his conscience. 8/10 Track 7: The most active track yet! lot of techno/synthesizers going on around another female vocalist, the key lyric here is 'but if you don't let me go, its harder to go', it seems like another call to independence like the last track, just a different genre. It seems like the character is now coming to terms quicker hence the very fast sound of this track. Another solid if not amazing track. 7/10 Track 8: I'm guessing this song is called 'Half The World Away' as that seems to be the most prominent line. Again, a lot going on here, quite a lot of different instruments at a fast pace, swinging violins and has a slightly sadder feel than the other two tracks, I guess again reflecting the daunting possibility that they could be half the world away from each other, we seem to be going on a bit of a rollercoaster ride here! 8/10 Edited July 23, 201212 yr by C.W
July 23, 201212 yr and part 2: Track 9: Ooh I love this! I think its clear that this is shifting to a different perspective or it could be a girlfriend of the character, she is lamenting over the loss of presumably a loved one. She uses various metaphors and there's even a plane noise in here somewhere. It then quiets down completely to a capella and ends with a creepy and sad instrumental. Its amazing if mainly for the second part and Its my favourite on the CD  9/10 Track 10: And now we have quite fast paced instrumental track, plucking guitars, flashy synths and sirens all around! to me, it sounds like it would be quite good in a club, and that to me signals that the character and friends have found the club and are starting to lose their minds & have a good time. Its quite happy in that sense, as for myself, I love a good dance instrumental :D 8/10 Track 11: Another fast paced dubstep-like track, with a woman saying what sounds like 'I don't want the stony dagger, exactomo' This probably just adds to the happy mood built up in the last track, maybe they're now all at the bar and drinking like there's no tomorrow, not much else to say, the vocals can get annoying, but the instrumental's very good 8/10 Track 12: And now we come to a track bursting with positivity! the vocal lines consist of 'Ooh! I love you so, don't know why I love you, I'll never know and then a chipmunk repeating it, this vocal loop is repeated constantly. You can almost this being played while he's dancing round in a dazed, drunken circle, perhaps in this context, it works as a statement to life, there are times when you love life, but don't know why as you can hate it the next, I'd guess the character is still highly drunk at this stage, so more club ridden joy really, I love music like this, so this floats my boat very well. 9/10 Track 13: The hangover kicks in instantly, a very melancholy piano led lament, I think the character is passed out at this point and the alcohol in his system is making him have strange visionaries and the doubt kicks back in, just like the rain outside. Its a nice track that reminds me again of Laura Marling or PJ Harvey, quite understated. 7/10 Track 14: The shortest track here, it all sounds very heavenly and dreamy, I'm gonna say the character's having a dream and is maybe having a bit of a 'Christmas Carol' type experience, I can't really say much else as its quite hard to put down in words. On the track itself, its alright but definitely one of the weaker tracks 6/10 Track 15: The first track with male vocals! Its also the longest. I can picture the hungover character waking up after his same dream and walking round his empty house, no one there on the day he leaves. not remembering anything that went on last night until he sees a picture of the Horizon building! (this has given me so much inspiration for a story!), I can picture him just sitting and thinking about what went on, the track gets bigger and bigger until a full blown choir is singing, I can imagine he is slowly building in anger and frustration until he moves out instantly, the world doesn't care, he's moving away now without even saying goodbye. Can't tell who's singing, sounds very James Vincent McMorrow/Ben Howard though, I really like it, the harmonies and the sole sad voice make it really strong. 9/10 Track 16: We finish with two piano instrumental tracks, this is the more negative and very powerful, I really like the emotional strength garnered from just a piano. I can picture the character shrouded with regret and leaving what everyone remembered him for - a wreck who'll never come to anything. That's what I get anyway from this track and the last. (I'm sure you didn't intend for this :P) He sits thinking on the train, I hope it ends happily :( 9/10 Track 17: More piano, and a long one at over six minutes. This to me sounds like he got a text or phonecall from his family/friends saying that they loved him and wished him well and were so sorry they couldn't be there for him. This I think gives some reassurance, and its reflected in the slightly more positive tone in the piano. I can just imagine this being played over the end credits of the film really. Its a really good way to close the CD. 8/10 Overall: 9/10 I guess I've gone totally off on a tangent here but it really did put a story together in my mind, I can genuinely as a short independent film or a proper soundtrack album as they all fit together so well there was no bad tracks on there so this was a truly fantastic discovery and great way to begin with this, thank you, whoever you are :D I guess if you're an indie kid ~ you may already know some of these songs or not find it as good as I did, but I didn't know them so it made it all the better, I would certainly recommend it! (yeah, sorry about that! ) Edited July 23, 201212 yr by C.W
July 23, 201212 yr The mix you've got sounds really interesting! I'd like a link to that as well. I'm writing up my review now. Tirren you're gonna love me :D Edited July 23, 201212 yr by Atonement
July 23, 201212 yr ~ I want to apologize for the next 1,420 words (estimate) in advance. ''The Joy of Svex'' : Review by me. 23-07-12 (the listening experience itself was on the night of the 22nd - a day that has since been pronounced as a national mourning day). When I first read the title 'The Joy of Svex' I thought this should be interesting. I'm always the 'perv' one of the group I hang out with so a couple of dirty songs wouldn't hurt me (I was already expecting my fav gurl Queen B to pop up at this point). Unfortunately I soon realised thanks to the Swedish bra that is the album cover, that ''Svex'' is also a reference to Sweden. I was in for an album full of Swedish songs and if there's one thing I don't really care for it seems to be Scandipop music (imagine the absolute horror - the thought of rewatching 'Insidious' whilst camping in the wild was nothing compared to this). The instructions came and told me I needed to grab a drink for this (which I did (to survive) - although not quite the kopparberg mixed fruits that were instructed (what even is that!?). I thought a martini or two would do just fine). But I want you (and everyone) to know that I really tried listening to this with an open mind. Track #01 : This song has a very, nice upbeat intro that's thankfully not too short. On the whole I do think the song was going on for a bit too long. It's a good song to start things off with and it was quite enjoyable. Track #02 : Sounds like the same singer from the first track and the song is again an uptempo dance track. I don't think this is as good as the first track but it sounds like a great song to fall asleep with (and that's not necessarily a bad thing! Althoug here it is) Track #03 : The third song includes live sounds but isn't live, unfortunately. I like the instrumentation in the chorus which gives that bit oomph to the song that is much needed although it also gives me a bit of faux-rock feeling. Track #04 : This track was very intriguing. Starts off with strings and immediately gets very interesting. I like the singer's voice and the unpredictability of his voice. Chorus is also very strong. First song from the mixtape (and little did I know : last) that I really liked. Too bad that it's very short (around 3 minutes). Makes me think that this could've been a Swedish Eurovision entry or an entry of Melodifestivalen (or whatever it's called). Track #05 : This is one I know thanks to JakeWild's entry in BJSC. This is ''Into the Clouds'' by Sound of Arrows. Though I like the track I don't think it's as good as ''Conquest'', which was one of my faves from that contest. Track #06 : Her voice sounds like Carly Rae Jepsen. The song is not something I'd choose to listen to again but the chorus is not all bad. The lyrics also kind of made me cringe. Track #07 : Really horrible chorus. Very cheesy song, don't like this at all. Track #08 : The first song that is actually in Swedish (partly). Didn't like this either with a non-event chorus and beats that are not interesting enough to make me pay attention. Track #09 : Again a Swedish one. This one could have been about sex but I wouldn't know unfortunately. It has an interesting guitar solo in the middle of the song but the beat is not all that. It is too long to be a Eurovision entry but it would've fit right in. Track #10 : Everytime a song starts it has a bit of interesting instrumentation and I hope that it will branch into something different and surprising but within 10 seconds the intro sound drops, a girl starts singing and it sounds like your average girl-led pop song. This is no different. Doesn't excite me. Track #11 : The instrumentation of this song is somewhat nice and overall I kind of got an ABBA vibe. This one was not all bad but going back to this now I don't remember listening to it. Track #12 : By the time we get to track 12 I was already going off on a tangeant about what to do with my life if my current study plans don't work out. And if I'd ever be happy living on the country side with a lovely man next to me. Track #13 : A male vocal. Interesting. The sounds after the chorus are nice and kind of sound like the Freemasons remix of Bittersweet (by SE-B). My feelings tell me I've just listened to an Eric Saade track, eeck! Well at least it's better than the dreadful 'Popular' (but what isn't?). Track #14 : Another dance track sung by a male. It passed me by unfortunately as I was drifting into my own thoughts. Track #15 : I feel SO incredibly ashamed but I actually know this song. It's the Swedish version (shocking!) of the Eurovision entry 'Invincible' from 2006, which is the year one of my friends has the CD from so I've heard it multiple times. This was one of the standouts tracks from that year (although that Romanian dude who had the long name and was singing in Italian was obvs the highlight - just saying) and IIRC it ended up doing pretty well. In my memory her voice was alot better though, is this the same woman? Track #16 : Here I realized it was time for my second martini. Track #17 : Another one that sounds familiar but this time I can't put my finger on it. The instrumentation rings a bell with me. The track didn't do anything for me anyway. Track #18 : Quite a break from the dance tracks we've had so far. It's kind of a powerballad. I'm not usually a fan of ballads but at least this was something different, I guess. I actually took notice with this song. Track #19 : Did not enjoy this one. A woman singing about a man who she adores but he's not into her. I liked the subject of the song but I don't think it was executed that well. We are back to the dance sound btw, in case you were wondering. Track #20 : Another female led-dance track which is quite surprising since this must be the first one in this compilation. YAWN. Track #21 : Something Swedish and something boring. Track #22 : Hearing another Swedish track I've realized that I really don't like the language. It's not as beautiful and mindboggling as French or Spanish and not nearly as dictating or unfriendly as German. Considering the upbeat nature of this song this lady is probably singing about getting naked on the dancefloor whilst consuming large amounts of alcohol. I approve. Track #23 : Someone stole the title from an ABBA track! Gimme Gimme Gimme is being sung over a dancy backing track. Not as catchy as the ABBA song, that's for sure! While she was singing 'Show me heaven' I was singing 'Show me the end of this CD' Track #24 : And my wish came true! The last few minutes of this one-track compilation kicked in as I was thinking I might have just listened to the world's longest track (surely 'Like a Wall in Which an Insect Lives and Gnaws' has nothing on this). Key tracks : Track #4 Tracks to avoid : Track 2,3, 6-24 (slight exaggeration but there's truth in it) I suppose this CD is Tirren's (the title gave it away - as Pavel said). Thank you for making and I appreciate the time you've put into making this but please don't do this to me again. Especially not this long, 24 tracks was way too much for me when it, frankly, sounds like one very, very , VERY (very) long song. I'd be surprised if this CD was not over 80 minutes in length (but maybe I'd lost track of time after I lost the will to live (around track #9) or after starting on my second martini (#16, as indicated). You have left me no choice but to assume this CD was made to 1) slowly kill me from inside or 2) as a torturing advice to get me to spill some secret information. I would have CAVED if I knew what it was you were after. At least I got one track I really liked, track #4 is a keeper and I've listened to it about 10 times over now. I think the Eurovision loons would appreciate this CD more, but on the other hand I think they already know all of these. ~
July 23, 201212 yr :D The compilation was of COURSE mine (and yes, it is 80 minutes - the three minute length of most of the tracks means you can get loads on for an 80 minute limit). A couple of months back randomfurlong came to me asking for suggestions for songs for a mixtape which would effectively be a primer on Scandipop for a friend of his who enjoyed the couple of hints he'd heard (who hasn't reviewed it since. TUT.), although after about five minutes I'd basically set off on making it myself with input from RF. Anyway, this rolled around and, even though the tracklisting is effectively a greatest hits of Kopečka and Melodifestivalen, I thought it would be EXCELLENT to submit it in the hope it ended up with someone like Dandy* or Grebo (who I was secretly hoping would get this), but that Atonement was an appropriate victim was PLEASING. Anyway, I've no doubt a few others here will enjoy this - it really is a CRACKER of a disc *.* 01 Lena Philipsson - Live Tomorrow 02 Lisa Miskovsky - Why Start A Fire (BUGGER OFF is this uptempo dance!) 03 Vendela - Punk Rock Song 04 Salem al Fakir - Keep On Walking 05 The Sound of Arrows - Into The Clouds 06 Tove Styrke - White Light Moment 07 Margaret Berger - Will You Remember Me Tomorrow? 08 Nanne Gronvall - Hall om mig (give this one another try actually - it took me a month or two to come around to it but when you get it it's a proper earworm) 09 Lena Philipsson - Lena Anthem 10 Charlotte Perrelli - Hero 11 Jenny Silver - Something In Your Eyes 12 Shirley Clamp - Min karlek 13 Eric Saade - It's Gonna Rain 14 Mans Zelmerlow - Cara mia 15 Carola - Evighet (same singer, yes!) 16 Sanna Nielsen - Vagar du, vagar jag 17 Timoteij - Kom 18 Sarah Dawn Finer - Moving On 19 Anna Sahlene & Maria Haukaas Storeng - Killing Me Tenderly 20 Sanna Nielsen - I'm In Love 21 Pernilla Wahlgren - Jag vill om du vagar 22 Linda Bengtzing - Jag ljuger sa bra (It's actually about pretending to not give a shit that you've left someone while secretly being absolutely SHATTERED by it. I love the juxtaposition between the most joyous production probably EVER and the heartbreaking middle eight. For my money, this is probably the second greatest Scandipop song ever) 23 Lili och Susie - Show Me Heaven (Second to THIS *.* A complete discotits stormer of a track with the most poppers-tastic chorus I've deigned to ever listen to. I imagine this is what Dandy*'s mind sounds like after his fifth D*+O as he bends over to RECEIVE Ms. Dandy*) 24 Lena Philipsson - Det gor ont Also you MUST try a Kopparberg Mixed Fruits if you're ever in the UK/a gay bar! *.* Truly DIVINE.
