July 23, 201212 yr That CD sounds WONDERFUL Tirren. The ones I know are some of the BEST of Swedish that I've heard and I want to hear several of the others. Hit me up please.
July 23, 201212 yr That run from Hall Om Mig to Kom is seriously NON STOP INCREDIBLE I know/love almost all of those of course, but it'll be nice to have a full run through all the same.
July 23, 201212 yr That run from Hall Om Mig to Kom is seriously NON STOP INCREDIBLE I know/love almost all of those of course, but it'll be nice to have a full run through all the same. Oh I KNOW, randomfurlong and I have frequently discussed our favourite parts of The Joy of Svex (COUNTLESS hours overall have gone into refining this tracklist and its order). For my money the build from Moving On to the 1-2 punch of Jag ljuger sa bra/Show Me Heaven with the post-orgasmic cooldown of Det gor ont is my personal favourite run on the mix.
July 23, 201212 yr Now that is what I call a harsh review. Track #16 : Here I realized it was time for my second martini. Best line. Now, if only the person who got my CD could get around to reviewing it...
July 23, 201212 yr That said I'd have made a place for Delirium, possibly over Lena Anthem - as *.* as it is. Oh and THE GIRL is more deserving than a couple of those too.
July 23, 201212 yr I thought it would be EXCELLENT to submit it in the hope it ended up with someone like Dandy* or Grebo (who I was secretly hoping would get this), but that Atonement was an appropriate victim was PLEASING. Tirren to be banned from the next CDSwap  Also you MUST try a Kopparberg Mixed Fruits if you're ever in the UK/a gay bar! *.* Truly DIVINE. The last (& only) time I was there was in 2009 (I'm talking about the UK - not a gay bar  !). I'll call you next time I plan to have my plane fly out there so you can hit me up. Edited July 23, 201212 yr by Atonement
July 24, 201212 yr C.W, THAT'S MIIINE. :D I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I was a bit scared that someone wouldn't 'get it' and just think it's a depressing compilation of weird songs. Haha! I love the way you wrote the review and some of your assumptions are spot-on! :D Horizons This is the building complex in Rennes, France called 'Les Horizons'. I took this photo one night on a walk into town in the rain with friends. It was a few nights before we left France. You could see this building from my room in the uni residence, and basically from anywhere else in the city. :P Track 1: So for a start we have a piano instrumental, and that's it. Its almost like the opening for Someone Like You, but does sound a lot darker (and quite obviously isn't that!), it starts to speed up halfway through and generally gets faster and faster, until a sort of siren like noise can be heard at the end, before coming to an abrupt finish. I almost imagine it to be the opening of this film, in which no dialogue is really needed, its quite dark and sets the tone well. 7/10 -- Ludovico Einaudi 'Fly' :: It is indeed the opening to a film! It's a French film called Les Intouchables. It was released in October/November 2011 when I was living there and is officially the second most successful French film of all time. I've watched it countless times since and the score to it is fantastic. :D Track 2: More piano, this is far more sinister and has soft violins in the background, there is no vocals but a faint sound of a vocal sample and humming of a female, I like it much more than the intro and think at this stage in the story, we would be getting an insight into the protagonists mind, possibly when walking through the rain, reflecting doubt. 8/10 -- :: I came across this when listening to the Hotel Costes compilations. I'd highly recommend them if you like electronic/lounge music. So so so good! Track 3: Now we come to our first vocal track - its a female, it starts out quiet and then erupts into a hushed but dramatic vocal about how far away she is going and something about 'bonfires', It reminds me of someone, but I'm not sure who. Its very angry, confused & sad, and possibly reflects the fears of the protagonist while the rain still pours down harder, there's also a solo after her chorus that sounds like a saxophone accompanied by thrashing guitars & sad violins, I really like it. 8/10 -- :: I was really skeptical of putting this on the 'CD' because most indie people would know it. It came on shuffle one evening in France (it was pouring rain and I had to go to a French language course at 6pm). Such a good song if you're in a bad mood or just dreading something. Haha! I'm glad you like it though, and I would recommend the rest of their stuff if you don't know them already. :D Track 4: This has got a slightly mad feel to it, a lot going on, the female's vocals sound slightly drawn out and mysterious, she seems to be singing about selfish love and how no one's there to hold her hand. I think it would further delve deep into the character's mind, maybe he thinks he's being selfish and blocking out all aspirations. The rain still pounding down. it wasn't one of my favourites, but its still very good. 7/10 -- :: I absolutely adore this song. It is a bit all over the place, so I can understand why some wouldn't be too fond of it. I listened to it a lot in January when we had really cold weather (it stayed dry and was -16°C for an entire week!). Really nice song to study to as well! It's off his Bunkka album. Track 5: This is a lot calmer, its held by a constant 'na na na na' hook, but it sounds very Laura Marling-esque. The lyrics are quite dark, talking about a monster on the...something, can't tell what she's saying. she says about how you shouldn't 'let them get you' so maybe this is a call to the world and how its moving them in places they don't want to go, I sense the rain has calmed down a little bit. As for my opinion, I have listened to Laura Marling's album and liked it, this reminds me of her so I like it quite a bit. 8/10 -- :: My heatwave song! :D It's dark but really calming song and perfect for a hot evening. We had 31ºC for two weeks in October so I stayed indoors most of the time (I hate the heat :P) and this was one of the songs that I played most often. I think Zech sent it to BJSC once if I remember correctly? It was a good while ago, though! Track 6: This is a rap song, sung by a female rapper and it ain't Nicki Minaj! its a very bluesy affair, saxophone solo's occuring after every chorus line. Its not normally my sort of thing, but I like this, brilliant mood going on throughout the track. It may be Speech Debelle, although I haven't heard any of her music, it sounds like a call out to independence and how they will always keep going on to me. The lyrics 'the sun will rise without fail...even if you only get a little bit, work with it'. it has a positive message ringing out and I think the character is slowly coming to terms with moving, like a talk with his conscience. 8/10 -- :: You guessed correctly! :D This is one I keep for the good days (and I was gutted to to it didn't qualify from the semis in BJSC :drama: ). A lot of Bonobo's stuff is good and I would recommend his stuff! Track 7: The most active track yet! lot of techno/synthesizers going on around another female vocalist, the key lyric here is 'but if you don't let me go, its harder to go', it seems like another call to independence like the last track, just a different genre. It seems like the character is now coming to terms quicker hence the very fast sound of this track. Another solid if not amazing track. 7/10 -- :: I adoooore this. It's on the soundtrack for the film Go which I would highly recommend. She's Canadian and her stuff is amazing. I felt I needed to include this to up the tempo slightly as it was getting a bit too sombre. :P Track 8: I'm guessing this song is called 'Half The World Away' as that seems to be the most prominent line. Again, a lot going on here, quite a lot of different instruments at a fast pace, swinging violins and has a slightly sadder feel than the other two tracks, I guess again reflecting the daunting possibility that they could be half the world away from each other, we seem to be going on a bit of a rollercoaster ride here! 8/10 -- :: Same artist as before. It's off her album Breath from Another which is stunning. If you liked this then I think you'd enjoy that album. :D Track 9: Ooh I love this! I think its clear that this is shifting to a different perspective or it could be a girlfriend of the character, she is lamenting over the loss of presumably a loved one. She uses various metaphors and there's even a plane noise in here somewhere. It then quiets down completely to a capella and ends with a creepy and sad instrumental. Its amazing if mainly for the second part and Its my favourite on the CD  9/10 -- :: I'm glad you like this! I hesitated a bit with this as I thought it was too dark, but thought it would be a good discovery for someone. :D It's one I played on my return from France (post-Erasmus depression!) and I'm still not sick of it. Track 10: And now we have quite fast paced instrumental track, plucking guitars, flashy synths and sirens all around! to me, it sounds like it would be quite good in a club, and that to me signals that the character and friends have found the club and are starting to lose their minds & have a good time. Its quite happy in that sense, as for myself, I love a good dance instrumental :D 8/10 -- Cardinale 'Synchronisation' :: This is a French group, pretty much unknown, and I came across them not so long ago. I think you described it perfectly! :D Track 11: Another fast paced dubstep-like track, with a woman saying what sounds like 'I don't want the stony dagger, exactomo' This probably just adds to the happy mood built up in the last track, maybe they're now all at the bar and drinking like there's no tomorrow, not much else to say, the vocals can get annoying, but the instrumental's very good 8/10 -- :: The French adore this group. They're from Belgium but their stuff is amazing. It's off their album 'Grand Prix'. I wanted to include 'Noir Désir' by the same group but the mp3 file was being a twat and it wouldn't play on my computer (although it works fine on my iPhone). Most night bars in Rennes played their stuff. :D Track 12: And now we come to a track bursting with positivity! the vocal lines consist of 'Ooh! I love you so, don't know why I love you, I'll never know and then a chipmunk repeating it, this vocal loop is repeated constantly. You can almost this being played while he's dancing round in a dazed, drunken circle, perhaps in this context, it works as a statement to life, there are times when you love life, but don't know why as you can hate it the next, I'd guess the character is still highly drunk at this stage, so more club ridden joy really, I love music like this, so this floats my boat very well. 9/10 -- Cassius 'I <3 You So' :: Ahhh yes! The party track! Every single party in the residence would have this song playing. It's French and they love it. On NYE I witnessed a naked party (the less said the better :D) in the studio opposite mine and they were all dancing to this song! Track 13: The hangover kicks in instantly, a very melancholy piano led lament, I think the character is passed out at this point and the alcohol in his system is making him have strange visionaries and the doubt kicks back in, just like the rain outside. Its a nice track that reminds me again of Laura Marling or PJ Harvey, quite understated. 7/10 -- Lanterns on the Lake 'You're Almost There' :: Hangover indeed! Well, not literally, because I don't drink alcohol, but I know what you mean. :heehee: They're a band from Newcastle, I think! It's one for the low rainy days! Track 14: The shortest track here, it all sounds very heavenly and dreamy, I'm gonna say the character's having a dream and is maybe having a bit of a 'Christmas Carol' type experience, I can't really say much else as its quite hard to put down in words. On the track itself, its alright but definitely one of the weaker tracks 6/10 -- :: I get why this may not be everybody's cup of tea, as it is quite dreamy. It's featured in the film J'ai tué ma mère. ^_^ But I'm glad 'weak' is only 6/10! Yay! :D Track 15: The first track with male vocals! Its also the longest. I can picture the hungover character waking up after his same dream and walking round his empty house, no one there on the day he leaves. not remembering anything that went on last night until he sees a picture of the Horizon building! (this has given me so much inspiration for a story!), I can picture him just sitting and thinking about what went on, the track gets bigger and bigger until a full blown choir is singing, I can imagine he is slowly building in anger and frustration until he moves out instantly, the world doesn't care, he's moving away now without even saying goodbye. Can't tell who's singing, sounds very James Vincent McMorrow/Ben Howard though, I really like it, the harmonies and the sole sad voice make it really strong. 9/10 -- :: Oooh I adore this and I'm so glad you liked it! And I think you described it perfectly as well (minus the hangover :P)! It was also the intro and outro of the Danish/Swedish TV series The Bridge which was aired on BBC4. :D Track 16: We finish with two piano instrumental tracks, this is the more negative and very powerful, I really like the emotional strength garnered from just a piano. I can picture the character shrouded with regret and leaving what everyone remembered him for - a wreck who'll never come to anything. That's what I get anyway from this track and the last. (I'm sure you didn't intend for this :P) He sits thinking on the train, I hope it ends happily :( 9/10 -- :: This is one of my favourites of his. It builds up to a nice finish. It was in the German film Goodbye Lenin! and I couldn't not include it! It ends happily! :P Track 17: More piano, and a long one at over six minutes. This to me sounds like he got a text or phonecall from his family/friends saying that they loved him and wished him well and were so sorry they couldn't be there for him. This I think gives some reassurance, and its reflected in the slightly more positive tone in the piano. I can just imagine this being played over the end credits of the film really. Its a really good way to close the CD. 8/10 -- Ludovico Einaudi 'Una Mattina' :: Again, this is from Les Intouchables. And I think this actually plays at the end of the film, so I thought it would be nice if it closed the CD. I agree about the more positive tone, which was necessary the end of the CD I think because I didn't want whoever got my CD to be depressed and top themselves after listening to it. :P Glad you liked it! Overall: 9/10 I guess I've gone totally off on a tangent here but it really did put a story together in my mind, I can genuinely as a short independent film or a proper soundtrack album as they all fit together so well there was no bad tracks on there so this was a truly fantastic discovery and great way to begin with this, thank you, whoever you are :D I guess if you're an indie kid ~ you may already know some of these songs or not find it as good as I did, but I didn't know them so it made it all the better, I would certainly recommend it! -- 9/10 is more than I expected, so thank you! :D I'm glad you felt that it put a story together, as that was exactly what I wanted to portray. :D I'm sorry I couldn't be more detailed in my responses but I have the flu and I'm late for work! :D If anybody wants the link then please feel free to pass it on, or people can PM me for it. But yeah, I'm thrilled you enjoyed it! :D
July 24, 201212 yr Crystal Castles and Cassius   I was surprised they're the only two i know actually, judging by CW's review. I wouldn't mind a listen! (although I can't promise I'll get round to it any time soon, ha.) I'll try my best to get my review done tonight!
July 24, 201212 yr Do you use itunes? If so, happy to send you over a copy - I do think you'd probably like it actually. I'm not an iTunes user. Cant stand Apple, to be honest. I'll investigate on youtube instead. Thanks for the offer.
July 24, 201212 yr The mix you've got sounds really interesting! I'd like a link to that as well. I'm writing up my review now. Tirren you're gonna love me :D I'll forward it to you (and anyone else who wants it) you may enjoy it better than the one you received  @Cal: (to prevent a lot of scrolling) Well, I'm glad I wasn't completely off the mark! I actually looked up the building, but I only found the hotel in Sydney! :P I did think Ludovico may be responsible for the piano tracks, I know I Giorni from him, so I think I should listen to more of his material from this CD. Thanks again :D
July 24, 201212 yr @Cal: (to prevent a lot of scrolling) Well, I'm glad I wasn't completely off the mark! I actually looked up the building, but I only found the hotel in Sydney! :P I did think Ludovico may be responsible for the piano tracks, I know I Giorni from him, so I think I should listen to more of his material from this CD. Thanks again :D You're welcome! Even if you had only liked one track I'd have been happy. :D I must look up more of Ludovico's stuff myself actually. I've not heard many of his works! :o My review of Here Come the Girls will be up tomorrow or Thursday at the very latest! I'm so sorry for taking so long, whoever you are! I've listened to the CD a lot now and there's one song that is just a huge *.* moment for me. Overall, the CD is great and the review will be very positive, so I hope you're not too angry with me for taking so long! :D
July 25, 201212 yr I'm SO SORRY for the shit review I'm about to post. It's so badly written that I'm not doing the CD any justice. Here Come The Girls Note to member :: The first few tracks for me were a bit hit-and-miss, but I did enjoy the latter part of the compilation very much, thus making the experience a very good one! So yeah, apols for the low scores near the beginning, I do make up for it in the end! :P 01 :: Okay, this sounds really familiar! It’s a heavy track that you would hear in a dark bar in the rural States. I really like it, even though it’s not what I’m into these days. Having said that, I’d gladly listen to it again! 7/10 02 :: This is more upbeat and quite punk rock. Is it The Slits? I’ve only heard a few of their songs and this sounds like it could be one of theirs! It’s a lovely contrast to the previous track. 7.5/10 03 :: Really liking this. It’s one for the car. I’m not sure if this is a recent song or not, but it sounds like something from the 90s. Black clouds in a summer fire / Black clothes in your memory /Your wicked plastic smile, a transparency / The fire's dancing just like me. Great lyrics! 8/10 04 :: Oooh, this is The Shangri-Las! I’m not a fan but there’s no denying that they were amazing back in their day. The song is still really good and it’s one I think most are familiar with even if they don’t know it. The Train from Kansas City, I think? 7/10 05 :: This is quite short. I like the 80s indie sound. I know I know this though, but I can’t remember who it is! It’s a bit too high tempo for me, but it’s nice enough! 7/10 06 :: Oooh my god. I detest this. It’s Shonen Knife or something, right? It sounds different to the original 80s version. Perhaps I’m going mad? :D I adore the whole pop/punk/rock scene in Japan but I think that this should have stayed in Japan. 5/10 07 :: This is quite 70s-sounding. I like it! I like the singers voice and the tempo is good. I’m guessing it’s called All Pop No Star (it’s repeated quite often haha)? 8/10 08 :: Really like this! Would ‘electronic’ be the best way to describe this? I’m not sure! The beat is great and the lyrics are catchy. It switches a few times from upbeat and more rowdy to mellow and electronic, which is really nice to listen to. It’s quite modern-sounding, which is a change from the last few tracks. 9/10 09 :: This is my *.* moment. So so so good! It’s exactly the type of music I’m into. The chorus sounds like 90s pop but with synths, guitars and slightly distorted vocals. The singer's voice is lovely too. I can’t think of what singer/group it reminds me of. Thank you for this! 10/10 10 :: Is this Polish? Or something Slavic? It’s gorgeous! The sound reminds me of the Dutch band Autumn. It has a bit of a dark 90s feel, but I could be way off here! Whoever they are, I’m gonna check out more of their stuff! :o 9.5/10 11 :: Another 80s, possibly early 90s alternative song. Really nice, and I think I’ve heard it before. Something about a girl going missing. 8/10 12 :: Japanese again! This is a cute little song, although I don’t really like the singer’s voice. That said, I’ll definitely look into more of her(?) stuff because I like the overall sound of it. 8/10 13 :: This is OF COURSE The Dresden Dolls with ‘Girl Anachronism’. Such a fantastic group! This is one of the songs I’m not too fond of, but it’s still great. I prefer ‘Missed Me’, ‘Half Jack’, ‘Coin Operated Boy’ and ‘Gravity’ (my all-time favourite!) off the same album. Still, a great song and I was really happy that it was included in this! :D 9/10 14 :: I have no idea who this is but it’s quite good! It’s like a diet Hole. Love the whole sound and the mood. Definitely one I’ll be looking into further! 9/10 15 :: Almost wet myself when I heard this. It’s Furslide!!! ‘Over My Head’ <3 To be honest I don’t have any of their albums but this was one of my favourite songs off the Buffy soundtrack. I completely forgot it existed until listening to this CD! Yay for nostalgia! 9.5/10 16 :: This is like going back to the beginning of the album. It’s heavy, but rather fast. I like it. I don’t know what it reminds me of? Perhaps track 01? Haha! The singer’s voice is nice, and she makes some weird sounds throughout the song which I fully support. <3 8/10 17 :: Wow. :o This is really, REALLY nice! This has an old feel to it but with it’s production I’d imagine it’s relatively new? I’m hopeless at guessing so it’s probably a classic that I’ve been blissfully unaware of. :P 8.5/10 18 :: This is a nice little folky song, quite dreamy. The singer’s voice is familiar, but I can’t put my finger on who it is. A strong but calming song that is at the perfect length (just over 4 mins) for what it is. I’d be keen on listening to more of her/their stuff! 8/10 19 :: I know this one, but I can’t remember her name! It’s ‘Gone, Gone, Gone’. It’s a bit of a mix between country, folk, and rock. Not a bad thing at all! It’s a song that would be perfect for hot weather (GOD FORBID WE ACTUALLY GET ANY) but still a good one for any occasion. Sounds like she wants to get out of a small town and never go back. Been there, done that! Go, go, go! :P 8/10 20 :: It’s only the DAME herself! Shirley Bassey! ‘Light My Fire’. Such a classy song. I have to say, I was rather surprised to hear it on this CD, but it fits in well (surprisingly!). The ending to this song is always a MOMENT! 8.5/10 21 :: Another absolute anthem. Again, a little surprising but I’m not complaining! It’s ‘Les Fleurs’ by Minnie Riperton. *.* I love her voice, although admittedly I’m not a fan of many of her other songs. 9.5/10 22 :: Oh LAWD. What is THIS? Jesus. I hate it, yet love it at the same time? It’s frantic and annoying, but I know I’d love it if it wasn’t so... crazy. I’m usually into this kind of music, but it’s not happening with this song. Lyrics are bizarre and the strings and sounds are just intriguing! I’m going to give this another chance because whoever made this compilation clearly knows their stuff. I’ll try listening to this another day when I’m in a fitting mood. For now, it’s a 6.5/10 23 :: Was this in Tomorrow Never Dies? 'Surrender' or something? I know those words are in the lyrics but even listening to it after one second I knew it had to be a Bond song! Like tracks 20 and 21, this is a belter and stands out from the rest of the CD. Kudos to whoever selected it, as it’s not one to be forgotten! 9/10 Overall: 8.15/10 I’ll admit it, I was really skeptical about this CD when I saw the title. I had images of me receiving Tirren’s poptastic Melodifestivalen compilation nightmare. But when I listened to the first track I was so relieved! The first third of the compilation was a bit rocky for me. I liked it, but I was more into that sound a few years ago and my tastes have changed, but I still appreciate good music regardless even if it doesn’t do much for me anymore. The CD picked up and ended up being very, very enjoyable. Whoever made this did put a lot of effort into selecting the songs, so I do feel a bit bad it wasn’t given to somebody who would’ve been able to review it better. I’m hopeless at writing reviews! But I made some great discoveries from this, so thank you! :D
July 25, 201212 yr I'm enjoying how the Joy of Svex is being referenced ALREADY *.* I hope it goes into CD SWAP canon.
July 26, 201212 yr Thanks for the ace review Cal! Yep that one was mine, I'll do the track-list tonight. Nothing less than a 6.5/10 as well! (Apart from the Shonen Knife track that is... :D )
July 26, 201212 yr NOBODY BUT DEATH CAN TAKE HER FROM ME 01 9 02 6 03 8 04 9 05 9 06 8 07 6 08 8 09 6 10 7 11 9 12 4 13 10 14 8 already known: 01 sbtrkt 'pharaohs' 02 toro y moi 'new beat' (weird ass remix tho) 04 jai paul 'btstu' 05 gold panda 'you' 08 james blake 'lindisfarne i' 10 camille 'mars is no fun' By the 5th track of this i was simultaneously thinking OH NO i'm going to know every single song on this cd and being incredibly thankful that at least it was going to be full of songs i like, even if they're not necessarily discoveries. I was half right. Pharaohs, New Beat and BTSTU were some of my favourite songs of last year, and hearing them all together seems to make them even BETTER so kudos for that little grouping right thereee. The New Beat remix threw me off entirely at first because i KNEW the tune but just could not place it (even resorting to shazam at one point to get my out of my misery, only to find that the remix is SO OBSCURE even THAT can't locate it!) It is a pretty good remix but I do think I will be sticking to the original i'm afraid. Track 3 seems a bit weird sandwiched in the middle of 4 electronic bangers but it's a really nice upbeat indie-piano song that I enjoyed greatly nonetheless. 6 and 7 are both NICE, but 7 in particular seems to pass me by entirely if i'm not totally paying attention, whereas 6 is certainly one of the more interesting songs here, with quite morbid lyrics being at odds with his almost happy voice/the music in general, which makes for rather compelling listening. Then comes James Blake, obviously (with far from my favourite song of his but still SO GOOD) to break the longest run of unknown songs yet, before actually a rather nice, ethereal tune comes along and sings gently about a sonic youth with sonic dreams and suicidal tendencies, before fading out almost as soon as it seems to start. Hmm... Not so sure. There was one AWFUL moment at the beginning of track 10 where I thought it was an Olly Murs number, but Camille's voice (and the strategically forgotten artwork... whoops) reassured me that it was something much, much better. Camille has always been a little hit and miss with me but I do really like her when I'm in the mood and this was no exception- to the latter part. Track 11 was one of the highlights of the cd definitely, some booming male-vocalled electro, whereas 12 was exactly the opposite. I can only assume this is by Glass Candy (as they kindly advise me to call them for a good time) but I am really not a fan of faux-60s hippy vocals and find it far too contrived and annoying to be honesttt (the beat itself is really quite good though – just without the singing please). 13 was my absolute favourite of the compilation (and what a discovery), ushered in by Sleigh Bells-esque beats, I actually thought this must have been a sample at first but on second listening I think it's just a really similar, really good tune. The rap/r&b vocals fit this SO WELL and feature my favourite line of the whole thing- 'because a n**** go hard / kinda like a eggggg'. Amazing. The rapping also sounds a bit Childish Gambino, except good. The CD ends on another really good rap tune, with summery violins and lyrics that only just really seems to get going and then suddenly ENDS. And that's the CD done :(. I'm coastin ~ I think this review sounds far too negative for what the CD was, as there was only really one track that I didn't enjoy at all, and the rest I really, really did like. I wish it could have been a bit longer (the ending REALLY DOES creep up on you) as it seems to go by so quickly (testament to the CD creating skills I guess). Without the rap, I'd have thought this was maybe Brett-Butler's. With rap? I have literally no idea. tonyttt was the first idea but he's all but denied it so I'm going to go with ATONEMENT. Stab in the dark is better than none ehh. 7.8
July 26, 201212 yr Here Come The Girls: 1. Silverfish - Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal (2:47) This is indeed a noisy start to the CD! The chorus (HIPS!TITS!LIPS!POWER!) was the catchphrase of Reading 1990 (I think it was 90! Long time ago and all that.) 2. The Slits - Instant Hit (2:43) As you correctly identified, it is The Slits. I love their mix of scratchy guitars and reggae rhythms. 3. Patti Rothberg - Flicker (3:45) I know nothing about her at all but it is indeed from the mid 90s. Nothing else on the album is as good as this unfortunately. 4. The Shangri-Las - The Train From Kansas City (3:20) Got this right as well! Have preferred this to their bigger hits lately. 5. Shop Assistants - All Day Long (1:50) Seminal (well they were on the NME C86 comp anyway) indie girl group. 6. Shonen Knife - Summertime Boogie (2:18) Don't think I need to say much more. It's love them or hate them really. 7. Slingbacks - All Pop No Star (3:16) Glorious power pop from 1996. Every track on the album is fabulous. 8. Client - Lights Go Out (4:14) I honestly thought you might know this as certain people round here really love them and they do deserve way more recognition. Members include Sarah Blackwood of Dubstar and Kate Holmes of Frazier Chorus. 9. Dot Allison - Colour Me (4:33) So glad you loved this one. Dot is the ex-lead singer of the totally fab One Dove and her solo stuff is just as wonderful. 10. Kayah & Bregovic - Trudno Kochac (3:57) Collaboration between Polish singer Kayah and Bosnian composer Goran Bregović. First heard this on a Charlie Gillett World Service show in a beach hut somewhere in South East Asia. Totally drew me in then and still does now. 11. A.C. Marias - One of Our Girls Has Gone Missing (4:41) From one of the great lost albums (in my opinion!) 12. Chara - Yasashii Kimochi (3:31) This was a huge hit when I first lived in Japan in about 1993-4. Her voice is a bit of an acquired taste. 13. The Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism (2:59) I could have chosen just about anything by the Dolls. Brilliant, brilliant band. 14. Kristin Hersh - In Shock (4:12) Solo song from the Throwing Muses front woman. This didn't register anywhere from what I recall but it is a right gem. 15. Furslide - Over My Head (3:04) This is soooo wonderful isn't it? I have heard their only album but nothing stuck out like this. 16. Lunachicks - Sugar Luv (3:25) More heavy lunacy. Kind of a low-rent L7. 17. Smoke Fairies - Let Me Know (2:57) Newest track on the album. These are a British folk duo but they sure upped the umph factor on the new album. 18. Marissa Nadler - River of Dirt (4:24) Goes a bit country on the next couple of tracks. She just has a voice I love and this track is so sweet. 19. Nikki Lane - Gone, Gone, Gone (2:53) Not the sort of thing I usually like but it's so damn catchy. 20. Shirley Bassey - Light My Fire (3:27) Yes it is the dame. I think this cover is fantastic. 21. Minnie Riperton - Les Fleur (3:20) One of the best songs of all time. 'Nuff said. 22. PJ Harvey - Man-Size Sextet (2:18) I thought you might recognise her voice. It's an alternative version of the single with just a string sextet backing. 23. k.d. lang - Surrender (3:56) So good it should have been the main title of Tomorrow Never Dies. Sort of thing you can just imagine Shirley belting out. So there you have it. My usual mixture of old and new and loud and quiet. I always seem to open with something loud and abrasive so think I'll have to change some tricks next time. Thank you for a brilliant review.
