Yesterday marked the 25th Anniversary of Kylie Minogue's debut single - a cover of Little Eva's 1962 hit "Loco-motion". After a performance of the track at a Fitzroy Football Club concert with other Neighbours characters, Kylie was signed to Mushroom Records and her version of Loco-motion was released on the 28 July 1987 in Australia. It became a massive hit in her home country, spending 7 weeks at number one and became the best selling single of the year and of the decade. Exactly a year after, Loco-motion was released worldwide, reaching the Top 10 in the majority of countries, including the UK - #2 and the US - #3.

UK Chart Run: 02-02-02-02-03-09-18-26-40-44-60-x

UK Sales: 440,000 (11th Best Selling Single of 1988 in the UK)

Loco-motion debuted at number two in the UK, and at the time this was a record for the highest entry ever for a female soloist. The four weeks it spent at number two were all behind The Only Way is Up by Yazz and the Plastic Population.

Loco-motion is my favourite UK single from Kylie: The Album (perhaps beaten by Japanese release Turn It Into Love), and it will forever remain a Kylie classic! I cannot believe it didn't reach number one - although I think on two occasions it was very close *checks out Gezza's Closest Races to Number One thead* - as it is a song recognised by people outside of Kylie's fans and I bet the majority of these people will have thought Kylie sung the original.

Below is the 1988 version of the music video, and July's K25 surprise which includes many different performances of the track - including a 2012 edition which I've heard maybe be released as a re-release!

Please do post your comments on the song! What would you rate it? What's your favourite performance of the track?

Pete Waterman was aapparently mortified by the 1987 version of what was one of his favourite records of the time so that's why it was remixed for the 1988 release in this country. If I recall correctly "the loco-motion" was the best selling single of 1987 in Australia and of the decade at the time but it was outsold by Jive Bunny "Swing The Mood" in 1989 which took the title of best selling single of the 80s over there. I know Wikipedia says otherwise but this was widely reported at the time.

As for being No 1 here yes it did lead the midweek charts going into the weekend of the charts dated 07.08.88 was outsold by Yazz who got TOTP that week as whe was at No 10 whilst Kylie was of course yet to chart. The following weeks she wasn't even in sight of "The Only Way Is Up".

Personally It's an OK track which I did love at the time, and the time it spent 4 weeks at No 2 was when I first got into the charts and I HATED yazz with a passion for stopping her getting to the top, I think I bought the album instead of the single back in August 88 but the version on it is pants in comparison to the single version so I picked up the 7" at record fair in the early 90s.

Loved the loco motion back in the day and i did love it today, im not so keen on the version that charted in australia but love the uk version, i just wish kylie would perform mor ein an out and out pop way that it was rather than the slow jazzy style version she often does.
I dont like it one bit. Its def in my Top 5 least liked Kylie songs. I never listen to it.
