Patrick Wolf is preparing new album 'Sundark & Riverlight' as a celebration of his tenth year in music.

 

Has it really been ten years? Patrick Wolf released his debut album 'Lycanthropy' back in 2003, itself the culmination of eight years work.

 

Yet more than this, Patrick Wolf seemed timeless, out of step with the musical climate then and now. Toasting his tenth year in the music industry, the songwriter is planning an unusual double album.

 

Leafing through his own back catalogue, Patrick Wolf will re-work a selection of his own material for 'Sundark & Riverlight'. Offering up a quote by means of explanation, the songwriter said:

 

“This project started when I realised I had reached a 10 year jubilee as a recording artist. My first EP came out when I was 19 and in the 10 years hence, my voice has grown with me. I started out playing with just one instrument and singing with no microphones in folk clubs, on the streets and galleries. I missed that raw communication so much and the spontaneous energy of that live situation. When I went to the studio I thought I was going to record a one-man solo album, but I started to dream, and heard bassoons and bodhrans. This is my first totally acoustic album and so I made certain that we were working with analogue tape and recording equipment. I went on a mission to find a grand piano with the best bass response still full of character and I was told about Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios, but the piano there was too new for me. So Peter lent me his Bosendorfer Grand and later his bodhran and hammer dulcimer - the album and I are very grateful.”

 

Musing on the song selection, Patrick Wolf added: “As a songwriter I realised that some songs take on a life of their own once released. I never knew that 'Paris' from 'Lycanthropy' would become such an anthem for my crowd. Often when I sing the songs live after they are recorded, new words or meanings come to light then i improvise depending on how I am feeling that night. I thought It was time after ten years to take a moment to understand and document what these songs have grown up to be while I’ve been travelling them around the world the last decade.”

 

'Sundark & Riverlight' is set to be released on September 25th. Alongside this, Patrick Wolf has outlined the following shows:

Very excited about getting my hands on it tomorrow. "Overture" appears to have been released as a single to promote the new album, always was one of my absolute favourites from The Magic Position (great album opener) and so I am glad it has finally got the single treatment with this lovely acoustic version:

 

Listening to this album has made me realize that I still really, really love Lycanthropy and Wind in the Wires (and The Magic Position to a certain degree). However, this album is really boring and I also hate him too LOL idk why

Well I love this album, think it's going to make perfect Winter listening and while the arrangements can be a bit samey, I'm finding that I still really love the songs. It's made me realise that Patrick is one of my favourite musicians ever, although I agree that Lycanthropy & Wind In The Wires > the rest.
