June 12, 201312 yr I agree, dying her hair again would make all the difference. I totally agree with this, her hair is the main reason for all this flopping.
June 12, 201312 yr Author :D Jay Sean was and is a nobody. He got hits Stateside for a brief time when any male doing "urban" electropop could. People might be able to hum one of his songs but I doubt if anyone knows who the hell he is. A star he is not. You are missing the point. I really don't care about whether Jay Sean is a star or not. He clearly isn't. My point is he is proof that it is possible for a British artist who has previously flopped in the UK to turn it around and get a hit in America - obviously Jay Sean failed to capitalise on his success and soon faded into obscurity again but that doesn't mean it is going to happen to everyone. At the end of the day, I can't understand why people would write Alexandra off when she's got a fantastic management deal, a number of contacts in the industry which is only increasing and probably a record deal that is soon going to be announced. The UK situation really is irrelevant. In the States, Alexandra is basically a new artist who has had zero exposure so far. Slay summed it up perfectly tbh.
June 12, 201312 yr I'll never understand why her X-Factor guest judge stint is described as her downfall though. I remember coming away from that episode thinking she'd done a charmingly good job. I agree with this. OK, the press mocked her a bit for the "OK.com" thing, but I always thought that mocking was pretty lighthearted. People are saying in this thread she's been "demonised", but I've really never got the sense people dislike her as a person.

Cher Lloyd had a good reception over there after a lukewarm-hostile one here. Danny I know many who have many issues with her as a person. I rarely hear good things about her from the GP. That unfortunately says something. Even during Overcome I remember people being shocked she'd sold 4m records when she was on X Factor, as if she was bound to flop lol.
June 13, 201312 yr Jay Sean managed to break the states with 'Down' when he was dubbed a has-been in the UK. I remember that clearly and he spoke out about how the uk press made a "U-Turn" when he scored a no.1 hit in the Us and followed it up with another top 10 hit which proved he aint no 1 hit wonder.
June 17, 201312 yr Author Interview with That Grape Juice. That Grape Juice (Sam): Hey Alex! It has been a minute. How are you? Alexandra Burke: I’m good, darling. I am fantastic. I’m still on cloud nine because of my performance at the Apollo; I’m still pinching myself that I was able to be apart of that line up and to tribute Chaka Khan. There isn’t any better place that I could have imagined to give my first (US) performance. You don’t get any better than the Apollo! TGJ: Congratulations! As well as rocking the house solo, you shared the stage with powerhouses Jennifer Holiday and Deborah Cox. What was the preparation process like? Alexandra: The prep for it was a little bit stressful because I’m a perfectionist and I want the best for myself. I’m honestly my biggest critic (laughs), so I flew Jaquel Knight in to help me out and really bring out the best in me. Thank God for my management, because they helped me pull the pieces together to really help me do the number. I wanted to show Chaka how much I love her, how much I honor her and show her how much of an inspiration she is to me and she loved what I did! The feedback I got from her was great which meant a lot to me because I admire her and worked so hard on it! TGJ: We know you’re in the US to record your new album, which we’re so buzzed about. But before we get to that… Much ado has been made in the press about your decision to leave your label. In laying all of the speculation to rest, what exactly happened? There was some murmurs about ‘Heartbreak On Hold’ being the reason (we love that album by the way!) Alexandra: Ok. As everyone knows, I was with SyCo and then I moved to RCA for my second album (‘Heartbreak On Hold’). We had a great run, I was always treated like family, but then it got a point where I knew there was only so much jumping around I could do on stage. I really want(ed) to strip it all back and have my music be about my voice. Doing everything I did before came from the heart, but RCA still wanted a lot of the Pop stuff, which was great but I remembered the reason I won the X Factor is because I sang my heart out. People voted for a voice and I want my third album to be strictly about my voice. The label didn’t meet eye-to-eye when it came to deciding what I’d do. It was a mutual decision and they were and still are so great to me. But now I really want to go for it. I’m working with Drake’s producers right now, and there’s so much magic I want to create right now and I can do that with Kevin (Liles). He “gets” me as a person, as an artist… as a young woman. He gets where I want to be and that’s what I needed. I’m so humbled by the support he’s given me. So I’m going back in (the studio) with a lot of producers who understand me…Rico Love is one of them. I don’t want to put a tag on the music, but at the end of the day my voice is soulful so the music will always be passionate and soulful. I’d describe my “new sound” as a “Whitney Houston meets Coldplay”. It’s pure, it has influences of Pop, Soul, R&B, even Hip Hop- it’s really everything I love. But I’m making sure the focus is on my voice. The album is coming sooner than my fans think it is. I’m working on it now. In the meanwhile, I’m looking forward to giving them something as a pure Thank You for their support before that. TGJ: Regarding the album, any word on what label it’ll be released on? Alexandra: Kevin is working on things right now and there are labels we’re talking to now. There’s not one we’ve decided on (yet), but as long as they understand and share the same point of view it’ll all be fine. I’m literally doing what I love (on this record). I’m literally in the studio finding my own place so whatever label gets on board has to share my vision. TGJ: You’ve enjoyed so much success since going on the X Factor, but have also endured some challenging times. If you could, what would Alex today tell the Alex who JUST won the X Factor? I would tell myself to always remember to be honest and pure when it comes to what you love. It’s easy to become sidetracked and listen to others when it comes to making what you love or looking a certain way. So I’d tell myself to always remember who you are. I’d tell myself to surround yourself with people who humble you- to remember everything you have is a blessing because everything can be taken in an instant. I’d also tell myself to make music that speaks to who you are, and that shares the right message. TGJ: Speaking of the X Factor, we saw pics of you on set of the US show last year. How are things with Simon? My relationship with Simon is great- I rarely see him but I always love seeing him. I saw him a couple of months ago, it’s always a pleasure to see him. But it’s rare that I see him because I’m not on his label anymore. I’m still a fan of his and when I see him I’m always the same girl he met five years ago. That won’t change. TGJ: Naturally, then the excitement around this show begs the question – when next can American fans see you in action? Well you know what… I hope it’s soon. There are a lot of things I’ve been put forward for, but right now the focus is the third album and being in the studio. But I’ll tell you what- I’d give anything to perform at the Apollo again! TGJ: Message for your fans? I want to thank my fans for being loyal to me and understanding the transition- I really want them to love what I’m doing now because I’m having a blast making it. I can’t wait for them to hear it! TGJ: Alex, always a pleasure! Alex: Thank you, That Grape Juice! June 18, 201312 yr I think she's working on an EP/mixtape which is great. This new sound will be a shock to some (who a) wrote her off (and understandably so) b) didn't expect to like anything she'll ever do because it came from her. I hope she sings some songs on Jools Holland from it too (he seems to like her) as long as it's really good enough. Also it'll be live instrumentation led, so it'll be 'real sounding' stuff, sorry to say that in that way. She's vocally diverse enough to actually make this transition work and has enough charisma to pull it off too. I'm so glad she's in black American hands. She does belong there, they'll do right by her, which wouldn't really happen here tbh. She'd have to do everything herself sadly. I hope her new album comes out in late March 2014, with a late December single premiere and radio adds in early January. Or it may even be out here before that! If she does enough UK promo with her new team, she can get a good peak and good first week sales, so long as she remembers to SELL THE ALBUM THROUGH THE MUSIC, which they didn't do previously, sadly despite her cross appeal and talent. Radio 2 needs to be targeted here too, and sweeting up radio 1 and Capital (Capital with ££ and ensuring she does their little summer and winter gigs etc) bosses. People imo did want to like her, but the music let a LOT of people down, and so they don't have much respect for her. Adele, Amy and Florence have respect because like their music or not, they put their all into it and it's good throughout. Overcome was a great start, the follow up not so much. Glad this new record is vocally led. She never gets enough credit for her voice weirdly. People act like she can't even sing lol.
June 18, 201312 yr That interivew has made me Exicted for her looking forward to hearing the new music from her I think she is in very good hands :D.
June 24, 201312 yr Author I don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread but Alex has been working closely with Vinylz, who is Drake's producer. :D
June 26, 201312 yr Author There are rumours that Alexandra has signed to Def Jam. Nothing's confirmed yet but it doesn't seem like a big stretch considering her management.
June 26, 201312 yr I heard these rumours as well she's followed Def Jam on twitter as well so hopefully it ends up being true :D. Edited June 26, 201312 yr by troylovesmusic
June 26, 201312 yr I think she has. I really hope she gets it right, which I think she might just (Kevin Liles wouldn't be wasting his time and money would he?). So much love for that girl and her talent. I do wonder...if she DOES have success there, as in 2 top 20 hits and a hit album, could we see UK media being all nicey nice to her. I mean DM alone with the 'the only Brit at the event' for the Apollo Gig, like most British acts know how to properly network in US, hell, in black American circles... I think that was part of her problem, the success level. Leona being a WW superstar made people take her seriously, whether they wanted to or not. Alex lacked that (hopefully not for long). And many see Alex in Leona's shadow. If the tables turn, that's not really an excuse anymore and so imo, most of her detractors (as long as the music's right, her styling and her tv persona (ie Chill the F out girl!) are right too) would be silenced. It's sad she had to leave her own country to actually get the support network an act of her calibre deserves (talent and potential wise). Shame...(Same for Leona and many others).
August 15, 201311 yr Interview with That Grape Juice. Important points: - Album will be Whitney meets Coldplay - Album coming sooner than we think - Something will be released for the fans in the meantime (for free?) - Discussions with a few record labels That's interesting! I love Leona's Echo and I think this album could be similar with the Whitney meets Coldplay, but more commercial. I hope Alex releases something soon! Would love to see her on the charts again. :cheer:
August 30, 201311 yr Author Alexandra performed a track called "If There's No More You" during the Metropolis gig and she said it'll be on her third album. It's performed at 11:20. B-S78ihzOtk Edited August 30, 201311 yr by SceneofSIXCrimes

November 20, 201311 yr I doubt she will have a hit again in all honesty, but I am still excited to see what she brings. The last album wasn't amazing, but I do still love the singles.
November 20, 201311 yr Yes! Can't wait for some new Alexandra! Hopefully a late January, early February release for the first single?
November 20, 201311 yr That poor excuse for an EP has made me lose most of the interest I may have had in this. This better be nothing like that.
