No Doubt? :P The whole world has gone Gangnam Style crazy and I love it. It's probably the cheesiest UK no. 1 we're likely to have all year but everyone loves a good novelty track - especially one that could actually do wonders for more K-pop artists.

Some of the best UK hits start off slowly, building up their popularity before becoming massive hits and impacting the charts with a potential #1 peak. :D After 'One Day' has taken off all over Europe, I'd be gobsmacked if this didn't officially make the top 40 at some point.

It was inevitable though. :( Shame because I'd read comments comparing the success of No Doubt to that of Nelly Furtado which is unfair. Why? Because 'Settle Down' is a cracking track whilst I've really struggled to enjoy both of Nelly's two singles this year. The duet with K'Naan should've had its UK release as I still think that track had potential to be a hit in thr UK. Oppotunity missed.

The Romanian dance wave is over. :P After the success of 'Stereo Love' it even amazed me how many Romanian dance acts were suddenly creeping out of the woodwork at attempting to recreate the success. 'Mr. Saxobeat' and 'Fly' were the only tracks that succeeded. As for Smiley, this is more of a Europop sound that moves away from the textbook Romanian dance sound so might explain why this has stood out of the crowd. Top 10 this weekend? We shall see. :o

Despite all the love for this track, I don't think it's a strong as the synthtastic 'Live For What I'd Die For' which provided goosebumps it was so haunting to listen to (thanks to the glorious production on the track). 'For My Sins' is still good but, imo, not a slice of pop excellence.

I've not really checked out the album previews yet. I think Alex Clare is most likely always going to be remembered for 'Too Close'. Maybe he will let another company use another of his tracks for their own advertisement campaign. Worked wonders for Moby 'Play'. :D

I hadn't actually noticed. However, I'm impressed to see Olly Murs making the US Top 100. Doesn't like it's going to pick up but still a good achievement and promising start to his US chart campaign. :D

Indeed. :D It's a truly brilliant novelty hit and I'm glad it's going to be successful in the UK.

To be honest, I've never liked 'Blue Velvet' - it's one of those songs my dad liked from the 50s and I find it so boring to listen to. Even Lana can't make me feel excited at the prospect of covering a song I can't help but describe as boring. If anything, I'll be moving onto 'Ride' once I hear it. :D

I think it's a great track that has simply suffered from a lack of support from Radio 1 and I'm guessing Capital haven't playlisted it either? I've seen the video about 2 times in the last month which suggests a clear lack of airplay for the track on the music channels.

Hmm, will it last any longer. I'm sort of over 'Lies' now. :( It's still a great track but some months BJSC has a massive impact on my chart, then others my fave songs just can't compete the big hits in the UK chart and from Europe.

Is this a new album or her debut album? It seems like ages ago when 'Live For What I'd Die For' was released. That was such a fantastic track, made #7 in my chart.

So basically any Kylienips song that qualifies for the final. :P I regard Amatorski as one of my finest DNQ's - it finished something like 14th in Unknown Pleasures. :D

True, I've not really got the buzz over Biffy Clyro's new material. I guess 4 years after 'Mountains', they should've considered experimenting with their sound to connect with more people. Muse, The Killers and Coldplay have managed to stay successful over the years by having a trademark sound but still trying out new tricks along the way.

I guess it goes to show that with the track track/hype/promotion/airplay, any track can be successful. K-Pop was bound to breakthrough eventually but it was always a case of who. By being a novelty song, people in the UK are less likely to take K-Pop seriously in the future.

As mad as it may seem, I actually think 'Settle Down' would've done better had it been released OA/OS. Since its international release, there doesn't seem to have been any hype or buzz surrounding the return of No Doubt so you can see a flop in the distance before we even got close to it. :(

I've not had chance to see the video yet. First time I listened to it, I was a bit disappointed but I guess it was purely because I was hoping another 'Spectrum' style track. With more listens I'm sure this will click, but then 'Bounce' never clicked with me at all.

Everyone thought that when 'Kickstarts' "only" made #12 in my chart. If Example releases a single as awesome as the mighty 'Changed The Way You Kiss Me', then he could easily find himself back at no. 1 in my chart. I agree with you, this is alright but nothing spectacular.

Its her debut album which is due early next year apparently, already had a few singles, but they haven't connected with the official chart apart from Fighting Fire which she was a featured artist with Breakage, love that track. There is a lot of her material on you tube. By the time she releases her album, there won't be any tracks to release as a single, unless she is planning to write new stuff for her album.

By the time the album is released, Jess Mills will be lucky if there is any hype left whatsoever. 'Fighting Fire' was released in March 2011, and 'LFWIDF' was released around June time iirc? Will the planned album release even happen? If it's taken this long already to get an album out there then the towel might be thrown in before it surfaces.

They haven't really done any promotion to speak of as yet (I hear they have J-Ross this weekend) so I suppose it was to be expected. I hope to see 'Push and Shove' make a similar impact for you - possibly my track of the year!

 

Solid debut for 'For My Sins' - far from her best as far as I'm concerned, her other tracks were more haunting. But I can't wait for her album and am irritated it's such a long wait. It'll have been almost two years since 'Fighting Fire' when it comes out!

I really like 'Settle Down' and it was always heading for the top 10 as far as I was concerned. Has it appeared anywhere on the iTunes top 100 this week? :o I might have to check out Ben's iTunes updates and see there. I've not heard 'Push And Shove' yet so will reserve judgement until that happens.

 

As for Jess Mills, as mentioned in reply to Mikey, I do wonder why it's taken so long to release a debut album. Either they've got something special up their sleeves and are waiting to unleash it in early 2013. Or the whole project will be a complete and utter anti climax and no album will be released at all. There should've been more of a push when 'LFWIDF' was released as, for me, that was a real gem of a single - but one that failed to chart (according to Polyhex).
