No Substitute Love should've been massive, one of the best on a really strong album!

Emeli Sandé on everything would actually be quite good and would annoy Bré so all is good. :kink:

aNYway is miles better than "Barbra Streisand", such a shame it didn't do that well.
RAIN OVER ME- PITBULL

PEAK POSITION: 28

SALES: 83K

FOLLOW UP TO: GIVE ME EVERYTHING

With some collaboration Ho’s it’s a bit difficult to tell exactly what a “follow” up release is, fortunately for me Pitbull made it easy in 2011 with this “contribution”. With help from ex- Mr Jennifer Lopez this only just made the top 30, it’s your typical Pitbull fair, even the magic of Red One here can’t improve its fortunes though his ability to appear on every third track in the chart remains undiminished.

it's weird that this song didn't chart high in either the UK or US, given it has gathered more than 360 million views on YouTube.....

The flags in the back of the single cover may give you a clue.

Never Be A Right Time is such a great song, such a shame it flopped

I like Never Be a Right Time. I was surprised it didn't do better, and it was discounted aswell. Even more surprising was that singles 3 and 4 managed to be bigger hits than it, I thought that would be it for top 40 hits from the album at the time.

I think part of the reason Estelle dwindled off after American Boy is because she got so much bad press for what she said about Duffy, Amy Winehouse and Adele.

I remember that Duck Sauce song. I used to hear it a lot on the radio, I thought it would do better in the charts.

I was going to say I expect No Love to be up soon, but then I remember Love the Way You Lie never made #1. That definitely has to be one of the most extreme contrasts in succes between consecutive singles for an established artist though.

LOVE LIKE THIS- FAITH EVANS

PEAK POSITION: 24

FOLLOW UP TO: I'LL BE MISSING YOU

After the death of her husband Notorious B.I.G the tribute record by friend Puff Daddy and his widow Faith Evans sold a million copies of the track “I’ll Be Missing You” but it seems our sympathy was markedly short term. Heavily using a loop from Chic’s “Chic Cheer” this song is perhaps far better known as the base for a No 1 by Fatman Scoop in 2003 so she can claim some sort of victory I suppose!

NATURAL DISASTER- EXAMPLE

You would think two straight no 1 singles behind you that your next single might at least go top 30, but that’s the joy of the charts, you just never know. Perhaps it was do with the album being available by the time this was released which had drawn the sales away from it, or maybe it was just a single too far, he was back at No 2 by August 2012 so this appears to be just a blip in his chart career.

FOLLOW UP TO: BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM

A follow up that’s actually better than the No 1 that preceded it? Well when that track was the sh**e that remains “Boom Shake The Room” perhaps that more easily understood, Will Smith therefore makes our list with both his chart topping follow ups- evidence that his success in this field remains a complete mystery!

MORAL OF THE STORY: NOVELTY RECORDS DO NOT A POPSTAR MAKE

My least favourite follow up to a #1 smash was Spiller's Cry Baby in 2001, absolutely abysmal noise and probably ranks in my top 20 worst songs ever, Groovejet is close to the equivalent top 20 in my favourite songs ever!

I remember hearing Cry Baby some time last year. Took me a while to get over the weird-ass vocal, but i actually kinda like the song now! :o The Royksopp remix is better though

'Natural Disaster' was the last decent thing Example was involved in. :(

Midnight Run is my favourite on the album  (although it should have done miles better).

Vanilla Ice - "Play That Funky Music White Boy" should be on this list.

EDIT

Maybe not seeing as it got to #10.

Instead it should be Jimmy Nail - Laura a #58 smash hit from 1992.

Are you going as far as 1980s? Starship look to be a possible contender. The follow-up to "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", "It's Not Over (Til It's Over) made #86!

Phyllis Nelson of "Move Closer" fame, made #81 with her follow up "I Like You"

I’M NOT YOUR TOY- LA ROUX

PEAK POSITION: 27

SALES: 34K

FOLLOW UP TO: BULLETPROOF

Perhaps by the September of 2009 we’d all had enough of Elly Jackson’s rather marmite voice, or perhaps this fourth release from her debut album simply lacked the instant catchy appeal of “In For The Kill” or “Bulletproof”. A second album is yet to materialise so who can say if this was just a blip.

MORAL OF THE STORY: WHEN YOU’VE ALREADY HIT NEAR PERFECTION WHY TRY AGAIN?

I'm Not Your Toy will definitely be my favourite song on this countdown. It's so incredible, as is the entire album. I really hope the second album actually happens, I've been waiting for 4 years!!!!! :drama: Looning over.

DO IT- TONY DI BART

PEAK POSITION: 21

SALES: 33K

FOLLOW UP TO: THE REAL THING

Sometimes when an act gets a No 1 then only thing they can do (if they are short on ideas) is to make the same record again, the law of diminishing returns quickly kicks in. Di Bart was a bathroom salesman who gave up his business after he made No 1 with “The Real Thing” in 1994, not a wise move as this made No 21 and was his final top 40 hit.
