Was going to say exactly this. Cascada beating Michael Jackson to #1 is still the worst thing to happen in the charts since I started following them.

What about those nine songs that blocked 'Hold My Hand' from #1 :P

Did
ever charted in the UK?

Nope, the very minor Euro hit "Kushas Las Payas" never got a UK release.

Gezza, How many songs in your list ?

Edited by AlexRange

I was happy, when Cascada got # 1 and her single was over Michael Jackson.

I respect Michael Jackson, but new charts for new songs, not for oldies, even if they were very good !!!!

Not that that MJ song *was* good.

I can't believe this thread is *still* going!

MY LOVE IS LIKE WO...- MYA

PEAK POSITION: 33

SALES: 8K

FOLLOW UP TO: LADY MARMALADE

Just like Lil Kim, Mya didn’t fare too well post the collaboration (naughty Pink and Christina seemed to get all the luck) with this track becoming her last to chart in the UK. It did much better in the US where it went to No 13 but even Missy Elliott on production duties couldn’t salvage it here.

PEAK POSITION: 37

SALES: 8K

FOLLOW UP TO: YOU SEE THE TROUBLE WITH ME

As far as I can tell the follow up to “You See The Trouble With Me” differed depending on country with a rather cut and paste version of the Doors “Light My Fire” being offered up in Europe whilst the UK had to wait until 2001 for this pleasure. Seems like they only had one idea and let’s be honest that was all about the Barry White sample.

ANY ROAD- GEORGE HARRISON

PEAK POSITION: 37

SALES: 7K

FOLLOW UP TO: MY SWEET LORD (2002)

This track is only here obviously due to the British public giving Harrison a posthumous No 1 with “My Sweet Lord”, “Any Road” was recorded in 1988 but only saw the light of day after his death and struggled to make any mark on the charts, even in death we’re a fickle lot.

Mya...that song was not *that* bad but what the hell was all the 'wo' about?

Black Legend was ALWAYS going to be a one hit wonder.

FOLLOW UP TO: MAKE LUV

I don’t know about you but I remember towards the end of its tenure at No 1 I was rapidly getting very bored of “Make Luv”, thankful then that the follow up didn’t trouble us for wrong. A lot of these unsuccessful follow up tracks are from acts who just struck lucky once, and Room 5 were one such act who used adverts for Lynx deodorant to promote the track for months before it was available and without that oxygen this was the result

CRY BABY- SPILLER

PEAK POSITION: 40

FOLLOW UP TO: GROOVEJET

No record sums up the summer of 2000 like “Groovejet” perhaps it was too daunting a track to follow up, but Spiller could have done better than this. The Royksopp remix is in fact much better than the official version, the fact that it took Spiller two years to release a follow up might help to explain why everyone forgot him.

SONGBIRD- EVA CASSIDY

PEAK POSITION: 56

SALES: 7K

FOLLOW UP TO: WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD

Proving the power of mortuary pop, popstars are in many ways better off six feet under, no embarrassing dating, falling out of clubs drunk, growing older, making increasingly bad records. Cassidy was of course already deceased long before she found Radio 2 fame and started to sell albums by the bucketload but she only made the singles chart on 4 occasions and the top 40 only once so perhaps this isn’t a surprise.

MORAL OF THE STORY: I DOUBT SHE CARES

 I doubt she cares about even having a number one single! :P

No doubt about it, Eva Cassidy was one of the most amazing musicians ever.

I have a soft spot for Over The Rainbow and Fields Of Gold. ^_^
