I think it's kinda funny how such "minor" artists can get #1's with their first few singles (Cover Drive, Rita Ora, Wiley, Chipmunk, Dappy, Professor Green, Wretch 32)

Wiley's first #1 was the lead single from his tenth album, eight years into his career. I wouldn't call him a 'minor' artist anyway, he's one of the most prominent artists (if not the most prominent artist) in British hip-hop.

Wiley's first ever chart appearance was in 2002 as part of the group Pay As U Go (charted at #13).

Wiley's first ever solo single was Business Man in 2002, and it failed to chart:

Rita Ora's first ever chart "appearance" was on a #58 hit in 2008 (but she wasn't credited): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnCaov4ZxEk

Together Again peaked no higher than #4 but had an insane Top 20 run and sold about 750k

Yeah that was a pretty mad chart run at the time, even though it's a fairly commonplace chart run for a #4 single these days:

{4}-6-5-5-4-5-8-8-9-10-15-17-20-24-30-36-44-63-75->19

Got to be Billy Fury, easily.

aww the lovely Billy. :heart:

Never heard of Billy Fury before this thread (is that bad? :P) but he did have an extremely impressive singles career.
Come to think of it Missy Elliot never had one did she?

She did appear on Mel B's I Want You Back. But she's had plenty of good songs on her own that should have been #1.

Shania Twain :(

That Don't Impress Me Much - # 3

Man! I Feel Like A Woman - # 3

In this day and age, it's got to be Alicia Keys. Also The Killers and Linkin Park stand out.

Of yesteryear, Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Genesis, Ultravox.
