Last Christmas to me is much better song!

It's one of my faves as well.

By the way, you don't have to quote a whole post if not necessary, saves on space ;)

I heard a horrible dance version of Last Christmas yesterday in a pub. :(

You must be talking about Cascada's cover of it :P Wham's version is a lot better but I do like the Cascada cover :kink:

I hate the Cascada version - its just terrible and embarressing!

GEZZA’S NINTH CHART OF CHRISTMAS- 1987

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2012/3/22/1332437308143/The-cover-of-Pet-Shop-Boy-009.jpg

So to what so the Pet Shop Boys owe their Christmas No 1 placing to? Well obviously it’s a cracking tune but here once again the period covered for the Christmas chart was 14th-19th December which again probably heldback the major thrust of the sales for “Fairytale Of New York”. Indeed it is highly probable that FONY went even closer to the No 1 spot the following week which covered 20th-26th (no trading on 25th obviously) and indeed by my calculations the PSB would have clung on by the skin of their teeth (3k) and had the period been 19th-25th then it would have topped the chart.

Also there was the matter of Rick Astley. His version of “When I Fall In Love” had debuted at No 2 in the same week as the PSB’S AOMM went in at No 4, but Capitol had re-issued the original by Nat King Cole and as that track moved from 51-20 it took enough sales away from the Astley version and caused it to narrowly lose out to PSB and thus miss out on the promotion at TOTP and the honour of being No 1.

The release of AOMM was of course an accident of a kind, the duo originally having pencilled in “Kings Cross” as the single for December 87 but having to change their choice after the fire at the aforementioned station that November. Odd how fate conspires. Had Astley have gotten to the top it’s entirely possible that they never would have made No 1 and that FONY would have taken the honour from Astley W/E 02.01.88.

Other early favourites in the booking stakes came from Alison Moyet (with some help from French & Saunders) Michael Jackson, and Mel Smith & Kim Wilde (in aid of “Comic Relief”) but they all fell by the way side in the end.

1- ALWAYS ON MY MIND- Pet Shop Boys (107,000)
2- FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK- The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl (97,000)
3- ROCKIN AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE- Mel Smith & Kim Wilde (81,000)
4- WHEN I FALL IN LOVE/ MY ARMS KEEP MISSING YOU- Rick Astley (57,000)
5- LOVE LETTERS- Alison Moyet (53,000)
6- THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL- Michael Jackson (49,000)
7- WHEN I FALL IN LOVE- Nat “King” Cole (47,000)
8- HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH- Belinda Carlise (45,000)
9- CHINA IN YOUR HAND- T’Pau (44,000)
10- WHAT DO YOU WANT TO MAKE THOSE EYES AT ME FOR?- Shakin Stevens (42,000)

Quality to read this story - ididnt realise how fate conspired so much against FONY. Alos didnt realise the Rick ASTLEY/Nat King Cole story in that chart - Rick could have been no1 too! Good chart!!

My relationship with Always on My Mind and FONY has changed over the years. At the time I actually really disliked FONY and was a huge PSB fan in 1987 - not sure if those two statements are connected.

Then I grew slowly to like FONY and AOMM faded a bit - I went through a period where it wouldn't have even made a Best of PSB.

Now I love both of them again - but I respect that most people would have preferred FONY to have got the Christmas number 1 that year.

There are some brilliant songs in that Christmas Top 10. :D Always On My Mind, Fairtytale Of New York, Heaven Is A Place On Earth, China In Your Hand...
China In Your Hands love that record, that's a brilliant top 10, Always On My Mind is my favourite all time Christmas #1, apart from Rick Astley, the T'pau track was a landmark track it was the 600th #1

GEZZA’S TENTH CHART OF CHRISTMAS- 1998

http://cache.vevo.com/Content/VevoImages/video/3E814BC687051D93B90CA524450ABD41.jpg

The third Spice Girls festive victory was certainly their narrowest (their winning margins being 263k, 49k then 7k) pushed all the way by an animated Chef voiced by Isaac Hayes who, in the race, recorded the highest figure for a No 2 placing since Wham! 14 years earlier.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GPUsyGphKA8/TlSlHqSwePI/AAAAAAAABH4/19asXLUNle4/s1600/south_park_chef.gif

Immediately becoming the favourites for the festive No 1 after they announced there would be a Xmas single, the Spice girls were hoping to become only the second act ever to get a trio of consecutive Christmas No 1 singles after the Beatles (63-65)- honorary mention to Cliff for 88-90 who was on Band Aid II. Other early competitors came from Jane McDonald with her selection of camp Christmas tunes and Denise and Johnny’s cover of “Especially For You” for Children In Need but as the Christmas week commenced the only competition around came from Chef.

Although it was the closest race the Spice Girls were involved in, they showed no lessening of their selling power, actually selling over 120k copies MORE of “Goodbye” than they managed with “Too Much” (not being available on an album probably contributed here) but for all that Chef proved a worthy opponent.

1- GOODBYE- Spice Girls (380,000)
2- CHOCOLATE SALTY BALLS (P.S I LOVE YOU)- Chef (372,890)
3- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Denise & Johnny (141,000)
4- BELIEVE- Cher (129,000)
5- TO YOU I BELONG- B*Witched (108,000)
6- HEARTBEAT/ TRAGEDY- Steps (99,645)
7- END OF THE LINE- Honeyz (82,000)
8- WHEN YOU’RE GONE- Bryan Adams/ Mel C (75,000)
9- SHE WANTS YOU- Billie (73,000)
10- CRUISE INTO CHRISTMAS- Jane McDonald (68,000)

Gezza - Just wanted to say I've thoroughly enjoyed this and all the other countdowns you've done over the last year or so. Full of interesting facts and some surprises too! Will be interesting to see the conclusion of this one - know one for certain but can't think for the life of me what the other one might be!

Going back to the Cliff vs Kylie/Jason battle, just out of interest, do you have the sales for the other three weeks they were locked at no's 1 and 2? Have always been intrigued as to how K&J even at the height of SAW couldn't get past Cliff.
