The Song: What About Me

The Year: 2004

Chart Points: 1,885 points

Chart Run: 2-2-4-6-5-5-6-6-11-13-10-6-5-8-8-11-13-15-22-32-46-X

Comment: In 2003 Australian Idol premiered on TV. Shannon Noll, managed to get to the final before losing out to winner multi-million selling Guy Sebastian. Noll's debut single, a cover of the Moving Pictures' single "What About Me" topped Australian charts and went Top 10 in New Zealand. Surprisingly, the song managed to reach #2 in Ireland, possibly the only country in Europe for it to chart. Since 2004 Noll has had 9 top ten hits in Australia but never charted in Europe since.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

2004: "Drive" #4 (Australia)

2004: "Learn to Fly" #1 (Australia)

2004: "C'mon Aussie C'mon" #2 (Australia)

2005: "Shine" #1 (Australia)

2005: "Lift" #10 (Australia)

2006: "Now I Run" #6 (Australia)

2006: "Lonely" #8 (Australia)

2006: "Don't Give Up" (with Natalie Bassingthwaighte) #2 (Australia)

2007: "Loud" #3 (Australia)

2007: "In Pieces" #26 (Australia)

2011: "Switch Me On" #42 (Australia)

8.5/10 - His career is still strong in his homeland, despite it fading out slightly. It is possibel for him to chart again, especially after the randomness of his first entrance. Despite that, he is a one hit wonder.

Comment: Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III decided to us the name Aloe Blacc as a stage name for releasing music. As one half of the 90s rap duo Emanon he has released 5 albums and toured Europe and the US. As part of his second solo project Blacc released "I Need A Dollar". 15 charts from all over the world saw the song enter thanks to multiple television appearances and the promotion of iTunes single of the week. Israel and Belgium saw Aloe Blacc top the charts. His album "Good Things" saw 2 more singles being released. Blacc has now rejoined Emanon.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

2011: "Loving You Is Killing Me" #8 (Austria)

2011: "Green Lights" #69 (Austria)

8/10 - Although it's still very soon to bestow the title of one hit wonder on Aloe Blacc, as he has rejoined Emanon, it's quite possible we'll never see any solo work of his again. However all it will take is for one of his singles to feature in a TV show or movie to see it re-enter now in the new Top 100.

Comment: Australian singer Sam Sparro caught the eye of soul sensation Chaka Khan while singing in church. From then he went on to star in a McDonalds advert and have a music career. His debut, self-titled album was home to hit "Black and Gold" a song we wrote while working in a London coffee shop. The song charted in 13 countries. His second album released in 2012 was a success in Belgium and across Europe but failed to make any impact anywhere else. Sparro is still writing music.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

2008: "21st Century Life" #42 (Australia)

2012: "Happiness" #1 (Belgium)

8/10 - Like Aloe Blacc it's too soon to call. But it's possible that he can get another single to re-enter. However it's not looking likely.

Comment: Cork based Wedding band Natural Gas topped charts withe their song "The Langer" (which is a slang Cork word for someone foolish). The song lasted 24 weeks in the chart off the back of a Late Late Show performance. The band are still doing weddings and haven't released any new materials since.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

this was their only release.

10/10 - The band only released one song as they don't really have a music career, they are mostly a wedding band. It is a bit of a bizarre entry to begin with so the probability that they'll re-enter is incredibly low.

The Fools Garden song led to a paraody from Dustin The Turkey. It featured on one of his albums and although it never charted there was a promo video which was shown quite a bit on TV that Christmas.

Comment: Moldovan duo O-Zone had a #1 in 12 European countries during the summer of 2004. The song was so successful it was the highest selling single in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, The Netherlands and Belgium. The song was the third highest selling song in Germany between 2000-2009. The song sold over 2 million copies across Europe. The song is in Romanian. A cover version by Italian Haiducii was also successful, but it's success was a spring board for the original's success which was originally only successful in Romania. They're follow-up "Despre tine" was also very successful charting in over a dozen countries across Europe but never made it to the British Isles. The band had a #72 hit in Japan before splitting to pursue solo careers.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

2004: "Despre tine" #1 (Norway & Romania)

2004: "De ce plang chitarele" #17 (France)

2005: "Koi no Maiahi" #72 (Japan)

10/10 - The song was huge, and then the band split. Although they're unlucky not to be one hit wonders in the British Isles. They are most definitely two-hit wonders world wide so they do deserve the 10/10 because there's no way "Despere tine" will ever re-enter.

Comment: Las Ketchup, the 4 family members from Córdoba, Spain went #1 in 20 countries around the world while selling 7 million copies of their debut single "Aserje - The Ketchup Song". The album "Hijas el Tomate" sold 12 million copies. The song is the 18th best selling song of all time in Ireland. Unfortunately their second single wasn't as big a success ad the band disappeared until the 2006 Eurovison song contest where they came 21st in the Final. The band never made another entry in the charts of the British Isles.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

Comment: What is arguably the most famous sitcom of all time, every "Friends" episodes begins with this theme song. So it is no surprise that the song charted in 12 countries worldwide. In Ireland the song last 26 weeks in the chart half of which were in the Top 10. This was not The Rembrandts first hit. There debut hit "Just The Way It Is Baby" went top 10 in Europe and #14 in the US. Even though the band never split, they reformed in 200 but only released Greatest Hits since then. They have been working on new material while helping write for bands such like the Plain White T's.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

1990: "Just the Way It Is, Baby" #6 (Germany)

1991: "Someone" #45 (Germany

1992: "Johnny Have You Seen Her" #48 (Canada)

1995: "This House Is Not a Home" #17 (US)

10/10 - Made it big off the back of a sitcom and never appeared again. Surprising that their debut single never made it big over here though.

Comment: Grammy nominated Chicago five-piece Plain White T's, topped the US chart in 2007 with there single "Hey There Delilah". The song also topped charts in Canada and Germany as well as Top 10s in 9 other countries. The song which was written about steeplechase runner Delilah DiCrescenzo sold over 4 million copies. Since their breakthrough Plain White T's have released 2 albums both of which featured Top 40 singles in the US.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

2006: "Hate (I Really Don't Like You)" #53 (UK)

2007: "Our Time Now" #37 (Canada)

2008: "1, 2, 3, 4" #27 (Germany)

2010: "Rhythm of Love" #38 (US)

8/10 - I believe that the Plain White T's won't end up being one hit wonders. Especially with the new Top 100 available, there new album will probably render a hit that will reach the Top 100. They have been unlucky that "1,2,3,4" and "Rhythm of Love" haven't charted. Unfortunately there's no promise of there's next album, so until then they'll remain one hit wonders.

Comment: The Neapolitan song "Guaglione" which won the fourth Napoli Song festival in 1956 was covered by many artists including Dean Martin. However it was when Guinness used the version by Perez Prado in an advertisement the song re-entered earning Prado a posthumous #1 in Ireland. The song was prevented from achieving the same title in the UK by Robson & Jerome. The use of hi song "Mambo No. 5" in another Guinness advert aided Lou Bega in getting a #1 hit with it's cover. Prado had died in 1989 aged 72 so never got to see its success.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

this is only release since the charts began in 1962.

4/10 - It's unfortunate that Prado appears on his list because the height of his career existed before this chart did. He had 2 Top 10 hits in the UK in the late 50s which were sure to have been hits in Ireland as well.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

2004: "Make My Body" #42 (Austria)

10/10 - I'm not going to lie, I have no idea, why or how this song ever entered the chart. The only other chart record they have anywhere in Europe was a #42 entry in Austria. The duo have very little details available anywhere on the net. So it's safe to say that Klubbhoppers won't be making any sort of re-entrance any time soon and are therefore 10/10.

Comment: Australian, indie pop band The Temper Trap formed in 2005 when Indonesian born busker Mandagi met fellow band member Dundas and decided to start a band. By 2008 they had released their first album "Conditions". The album went Top 10 in Australia. Their lead single "Sweet Disposition" performed better in the Uk and Ireland than it did in Australia due to it's use in the movie (500) Days of Summer, an advert for 4Music and an advert for The Good Wife. The song also charted in The Netherlands, Japan and Italy. 2 subsequent singles were released from Conditions but never made it to the Irish Top 50. Temper Trap's self titled second album reached #25 in the Irihs album chart but non of the singles off it entered.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

2010: "Fader" #47 (Australia)

2010: "Love Lost" #32 (Australia)

2012: "Need Your Love" #39 (Australia)

2012: "Trembling Hands" #42 (Australia)

9/10 - as is the case with many acts on this chart it's a bit too soon to call. But the failure of the second album indicated that temper trap won't be making a new appearance.

Comment: Buffalo natives Goo Goo Dolls were propelled to stardom when the lead singer John Rzeznik was approached and asked to write a song for the film "City Of Angels". The Grammy nominated "Iris" was produced and earned them their second US Top 10 hit. The song topped charts in Australia, Canada and Italy as well as Top 10s in Belgium, Ireland and Netherlands. The song has re-entered in 2006 and 2011 due to it's use in reality TV talent shows. The song has been covered many times by different acts. Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne and The Wanted all performed it while on tour. 2010 saw the release of Goo Goo Dolls' seventh album. They also have written for other movie soundtracks including Batman & Robin and Tranformers

2005: "Give a Little Bit" #37 (US)

2005: "Better Days" #36 (US)

9.5/10 - Huge song. No follow-up. They lose the 0.5 on the off chance they write another song for a movie and chart with it. Until they disband, they won't be a full 10/10.

Comment: The 1994 Eurovision Song Contest saw Ireland host the competition for the second consecutive time and win it for the third. However the talk of the show wasn't the winner, the talk of the show was the interval act. Bill Whelan composed the music "Riverdance" to which Chicago native Michael Flately lead a seven-minute piece on choreographed Irish dancing which began a world-wide craze or Irish dancing and Celtic music. The instrument was released in the UK & Ireland and stayed #1 in Ireland for 18 weeks and reached #9 in the UK. The show was performed at the Royal Variety performance and In Radio City Music Hall. In 2000, New York's Broadway commissioned a performance and the show opened for a year. Whelan, who had produced songs for U2, Kate Bush and Van Morrison, focused all his attention to Riverdance before calling it a day after winning a Grammy and a Life Time Achievement Award. Riverdance is the second highest selling single of all time in Ireland.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

rhis was his only release.

8/10 - Longest ever stay at #1 and 2nd highest selling song ever! That is definitely a hit, however Whelan was technically a composer not a singles-act. He worked more as a producer than for is own solo-exploits. Because of this it's hard to say whether he deserves a 10/10 or not.

Comment: In December 1981 Journey released their 18th single, "Don't Stop Believin'" in hopes for their 12th entry in the Billboard Hot 100. Not only was this hope achieved, they also managed their second Top 10 hit. From then on the band managed a further 13 entries 3 of which were Top 10s and the last of which was in 1996. By 1996 the band had 8 Top 40 albums and sold over 20 million copies. However their success was limited to Canada, France, US and Japan as their highest peak anywhere else in Europe was #62 in the UK with "Don't Stop Believin'". In 2007 music charts accepted any song that was downloaded, not just singles. So now retro singles and album tracks were now allowed into the chart is they sold enough. It was this new addition combined with the use of "Don't Stop Believin''" in the final scene of The Sopranos that helped Journey re-enter in the Irish chart. The song was then adopted by The Waterford hurling team in a bid to win the All_Ireland hurling championship which, combined with it's growing cult following saw it enter into the Top 10 in 2007. The song hung around for 63 weeks. In 2009 the song re-entered again after the use of the song by X-Factor Finalist Joe McElderry and it's appearance in the pilot episode of "Glee". The song has the longest non-consecutive chart run in the Irish Top 50 ever. Worldwide the song has sold in excess of 7 million copies. As of 2012, the band have sold over 80 million albums.

Hits That Could Have Charted:

1979: "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" #6 (Canada)

1980: "Any Way You Want It" #5 (Canada)

1980: "Walks Like a Lady" #15 (Canada)

1981: "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)" #24 (Canada)

1981: "Who's Crying Now" #2 (Canada)

1982: "Open Arms" #2 (US)

1982: "Still They Ride" #19 (US)

1983: "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" #3 (Canada & France)

1983: "Faithfully" #10 (Canada)

1983: "After the Fall" #23 (US)

1983: "Send Her My Love" #9 (France)

1986: "Be Good to Yourself" #9 (US)

1986: "Suzanne" #17 (US)

1986: "Girl Can't Help It" #9 (France)

1987: "I'll Be Alright Without You" #9 (France)

1996: "When You Love a Woman" #6 (Japan)

8/10 - Journey aren't releasing any new material and any re-release that would have charted would have already done so. However there worldwide success has to be taken into account and because of this they only deserve 8/10.
