Kicking off the end of year top ten is the third album by Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins. She finished in my end of year top ten in both 2005 and 2007 with previous albums The Sound Of White and On A Clear Night and despite a five year break she certainly didn't disappoint this time around, her songs just as melodic and affecting as ever. Nicki Minaj's second album was far more to my tastes than her first, the 'pop half' especially and it finishes a respectable 9th for the year! Loreen's debut album Heal wasn't perhaps the 'best album ever' that many may have expected but it was still an amazing debut album. Loads of growers but sometimes that's the best way! Fellow former Swedish Idol contestant Agnes provided a slightly better album, the brilliant Veritas, a worthy follow up to the monster that was Dance Love Pop. Chock full of strings and great choruses, the only missing element from the album was the lack of the 2011 single Don't Go Breaking My Heart. And my favourite Scandipop album of 2012 comes from Norwegian singer Tone Damli with her first career retrospective. Looking Back really made me realise just how fantastic this woman is at exploiting the niche that she nicely fills - radio freindly string-laden MOR pop. A couple of duds on there from her early career but post (and including) Butterflies, everything has been glorious!

A couple of 2011 albums kick off the top five! The first is Kelly Clarkson's fifth studio album, Stronger. It was #20 in my 2011 end of year chart but continued to grow into the new year when I began to re-explore albums that I might have not fully realised the potential of/got lost in the Xmas rush! Far better than All I Ever Wanted, it was possibly my favourite Kelly album since the defining Breakaway, complete with two absolutely killer singles that gave her back to back top 3's in my singles chart for the first time since 2005! Reformed in 2011, Steps' Ultimate Collection finished 2011 inside my top ten albums but goes even higher this year and into the top five thanks my enduring love for this retrospective (far more than their new studio album which failed to register for my top 40 of the year!). Packed full of turn of the millennium classic pop, I still regularly listen to this great pop collection.

American chanteuse Lana Del Rey kicks off the top three of the year with her debut album Born To Die. An absolutely gorgeous, sometimes haunting, album full of sombre balladry and self pity, I absolutely adored this woman and this album during 2012! But not quite as much as I loved the ever over-exposed Emeli Sandé. The former guest singer on rap singles, she broke off into her own this year and became the biggest female solo artist since Adele! The beautiful Our Version Of Events is mostly a ballad heavy affair, save for Next To Me and Wonder from the repackage. But when the ballads are as great as Beneath Your Beautiful, Mountains, Read All About It (Part III), My Kind Of Love and River, it really doesn't matter. And then the great Massive Attack influenced sounds of Heaven and Daddy, it's like listening to a greatest hits album, even though it's her debut. She's had every promo slot going this year and would probably attend the opening of an envelope but it truly is one of my favourite albums of 2012 and I'm glad that people are hearing it and her stunning voice.

And onto the album of the year. After the slightly lacklustre Delta followed my two favourite albums of all time, Innocent Eyes and Mistaken Identity, I wondered if Miss Goodrem had lost her spark, or at least lost it in my eyes. After a huge five years away my favourite artist returned with Child Of The Universe. I fell in love instantly and Delta provided chart domination not seen since her dominance of 2003/2004! Providing no less than four chart toppers in my singles chart - the jolly comeback single Sitting On Top Of The World, the dancy Sophie B Hawkins soundalike Dancing With A Broken Heart, the gorgeous and emotional Wish You Were Here and the Tori Amos-esque stormer Hunters And The Wolves - Delta was back on top form. Add to this the jaunty country-tinged pop of Knocked Out, the Motown of When My Stars Come Out, the frantic drama of War Of Love and Child Of The Universe, the Mariah warbling of Safe To Believe and the Brian bashing Alcohol and it made for a stunning comeback. If you haven't heard this album I fully recommend it, I'm just praying for a UK release at this point!

Our music tastes are poles apart as usual but I'm sure we have more correlation in our singles rundowns! I do adore Jessie's album though, effortless brilliance from start to finish. Glad you enjoyed the Freja Loeb song, it was ridiculed at the time for sounding more like a BJSC entry but I stick by sending it!

Couldn't agree more! Why they excluded it is still a mystery to me, it fits in perfectly with the album! In fact I've added it as track 2 on my iTunes. :kink:

It's really odd, it should have at least been a bonus track and that 'sound' paved the way for the era! I was hoping for a beefed up version with a new string intro but even the original would have done, instead we got nothing! :drama:

Christina Aguilera feat Blake Shelton - Just A Fool (EOY #23)

Kicking off this year's top 40 is South African singer Nádine with my Christmas (and current) #1, I Will Be Strong. I first heard this song in 2009 following Kath sending another song of hers in BJSC and me downloading the album which it was on. Originally a stunning soaring ballad not dissimilar to Spice Girls' Viva Forever, it was recently transformed into a dance anthem which is what sent it soaring in my affections, both versions are perfect. Steps' Christmas comeback studio album might have been a bit of a miss but comeback single Light Up The World should have been FAR bigger. A classic Steps song which also sounded like it could be a lost Bond theme, it fits very nicely into their catalogue with a big swaying chorus and huge Claire ad-libs. Another of my BJSC entries falls as Norwegian singer Mr Little Jeans' pounding and catchy electro-song Runaway comes in at #38. Back to Brazil for #37 and Michel Teló's world conquering (UK excepted!) anthem Ai Se Eu Te Pego (Nossa Nossa) which is followed by top ten UK hits from Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift, with the fantastic Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) and I Knew You Were Trouble.

My love for Euphoria hauled Loreen's first single, My Heart Is Refusing Me, back into the chart and to a new peak of #2 early in the year, and the single release only helped its cause, the now transformed electro dance anthem finds itself at #34. Skylar Grey and Eminem are at #33 with their cheeky innuendo packed collaboration, C'mon Let Me Ride, time will tell if this can be a 2013 hit. It's no Titanium but David Guetta and Sia's second collaboration, She Wolf (Falling To Pieces) is more than worthy of a place in the top 40 and it comes in at #32, just behind yet another fantastic lead single from Cheryl (Cole), the excellent Calvin Harris produced stormer Call My Name!

Robbie Williams kicks off the top 30 with his chirpy comeback single Candy, probably his best work in over a decade and certainly his biggest hit, deservedly so, it just wouldn't leave my head for weeks! I was one of the forum's biggest and first supporters of Cover Drive's UK #1 single Twilight and the glorious slice of Bajan pop/R&B comes in at #29, I'm here for the stunning bridge/chorus and recycled Keri Hilson beats! Always reminded me of Spanish Eyes by Fifth Avenue, check that out if you don't know it! Criticised for being generic across Buzzjack, Chris Brown's Don't Wake Me Up for some reason had a HUGE appeal to me, and actually isn't all that different production wise to Euphoria, dark dance beats in the verses before opening out into a triumphant and soaring chorus, it's fantastic! My favourite single of his since No Air, and easily his finest solo hour pour moi. British pop band Saint Etienne score their first end of year top 40 finish since 2000's Tell Me Why (The Riddle) with the majestic and nostalgic, very middle-class spoken word song Over The Border. 'In 1974 I bought my first single from Woolies in Redhill, I started to memories the charts, memorise the leaks' - replace 1974 with 1998 and Redhill with Brighton and this IS my life!

Back to Eurovision for #26, the fantastic Romanian entry Zaleilah by Mandinga. Already having been a huge local hit, it was the favourite to win the Romanian NF and deservedly so. Sadly it didn't quite finish top ten on the night, even though it deserved to but it got some airplay on UK music channels and should have been a much bigger Eurohit! But a slightly better dance song for me was the crazy Bom Bom by British dance act, and likely one hit wonder, Sam & The Womp. Sounding like a mash-up of Bjork and Touch & Go's 1998 dance hit, Would You, I was all over this in the late summer and it made for a brilliant UK #1! And onto another UK chart topper, I instantly fell in love with Labrinth and Emeli Sandé's duet Beneath Your Beautiful when I got the former's album back in April. A stunning string-laden ballad with an interesting sub-dance beat in the background from the second verse onwards. It hit my top five as an album track and peaked at #3 towards the end of the year when the song suddenly took off after a performance by the pair on X Factor! Who knows what would have happened if not for that performance, it had looked like a low top 20 at best beforehand! But it fully deserves its success, it's always great to see an original ballad do well in the charts and this has the hallmarks of a future classic.

Another ballad duet at #23 and it's an unexpected country song from the legendary Christina Aguilera (who topped my EOY charts last year alongside Maroon 5 with Moves Like Jagger) and fellow The Voice judge Blake Shelton. An instantly radio-friendly and classic sounding chorus, I really hope this is big for them in the US next year because it was the easy standout from Lotus and probably her finest single for me (as a lead artist) since the iconic Stripped era! The first of four Delta Goodrem singles (and chart toppers!) in the top 40 is the album's second single, Dancing With A Broken Heart. Panned by many fans as her worst single to date, I completely disagree. The dance song was a brave choice of single, even if I can't help but recall Sophie B Hawkins' Right Beside You every time I listen to it. Rather dated production perhaps but it's a strong melody and it's a shame that it flopped so hard in Australia, and was so unliked by fans that she put a different mix altogether on the album. I'll stick to the majestic single version thanks! And just missing out on the top 20, Amazing was a VAST improvement for me from Danny Saucedo's previous Melodifestivalen entry In The Club. Generic again yes but it was a beefier generic rather than the tinny and slightly empty In The Club. Amazing was unfortunate to come up against Loreen's Euphoria in Melodifestivalen because with the huge number of votes it got in the final, it would have walked it any other year. And to be honest, had Euphoria not existed and Danny had gone to Eurovision instead, Amazing would have been a top three finisher, probably second behind the Russian grannies. Amazing lives up to its name, yes even the dubstep breakdown!

Join me for the top 20 of 2012 tomorrow!

Here's the moment, it's the LIVE top 20 of the year!

20. Maroon 5 feat Wiz Khalifa - Payphone

Chart run: 18-13-16-10-4-3-5-4-5-10-13-19-34

Having topped my end of year chart last year at the last minute over Ed Sheeran's The A Team (a move I still fully support, as they currently sit at #19 and #29 respectively in my all time favourite songs chart), I wondered if my love for Moves Like Jagger was more down to Christina Aguilera than the band that I formerly had no time for at all. However they returned with their first new material since said monster smash and not only did they topple Xtina in my EOY album chart but they beat her highest entry in the singles rundown too! Payphone was another instantly catchy pop song with a huge hook which always reminded me of the forgotten boyband LFO's Summer Girls. With rapper Wiz Khalifa's slightly shoehorned in rap actually adding another dimension of charm to the song for me, I was addicted to it for a couple of months in the summer and they get another end of year top 20 finish! It was their first UK #1 and seemed to cement them as comeback kings, having been in the wilderness for about three or four years between Makes Me Wonder and Moves Like Jagger!

19. Björn Ranelid feat Sara Li - Mirakel

Chart run: 2-3-2-4-8-21

The joke of this year's Melodifestivalen, local fans, viewers and Euroloons alike were up in arms when Mirakel by aging tangoed poet Björn Ranelid and generic fempop singer Sara Li made it to the final. Personally I'm not sure what everyone was smoking, to use a Mikeyism, because Mirakel is a fantastic pure pop anthem and Björn's performance was one of the visual highlights of the year. So many highlights - the last 30 seconds alone feature off key 'drunk uncle at a wedding' singing from Mr Ranelid, 'karleken karleken karleken oy oy oy!' 'herregud!', a triumphant twirl at the end of the performance and the overreaction of the year when the crowd start to cheer. All whilst (the stunning beauty that is) Sara Li looks on bemused, supporting her unlikely duet partner. It's a pop classic, haters to the left.

Mirakel.

18. Whigfield - 4Ever

Chart run: 10-5-1-3-5-11-19

Whigfield are certainly not an act that I've have ever expected to appear in my end of year top 20 in 2012, but 4Ever was Sanne's best song since Saturday Night (or at least Think Of You!). Having seeminly not aged a day in the joyful summer bliss of a video, the Danish pop legend's electro pop single has a brilliant chorus and up to date production and is just utterly charming to listen to. It was an unexpected #1 in my chart and of course I was all set to send it to BJSC before it was cruelly snatched away from me by Numayania. Ironically it winded up as one of their worst performing entries of the year but my eventual entry Fireflies by Still Corners only beat it by one position and ends up almost 40 places lower in my end of year countdown so it wasn't exactly a sweet victory! The Rontvians aren't a bitter nation though, and still awarded 12 points to 4Ever by virtue of it being by far the best song in the contest.

I tired of Mirakel quickly, very quickly but it was fun while Melodifestivalen lasted. Bjorn is such a great performer, undeserved last place.

Lovely seeing Cover Drive and Labrinth nearly reaching the top 20, perfect songs.

17. Haloo Helsinki! - Maailman Toisella Puolen

Chart run: 3-3-6-18-9-2-2-3-5-11-20

The Finnish charts are not ones that I follow regularly I'm sad to say, and hence I missed this 2011 mammoth local smash when it first came out. However it came to my attention when I got hold of a Finnish NRJ Hits compilation for cheap in early May. This song instantly jumped out at me when listening through - a Finnish language mid-tempo pop song with a sublime melody, pop-rock production and a 'ba ba ba du da' hook which anybody can sing along with. I wondered if it was a little too risky for BJSC and sent Mr Little Jeans Runaway instead to the May contest but a month later I decided to take the plunge and go with it. Turns out they both finished in 8th place so it didn't exactly matter! But this is a lovely song that I still listen to, it's a bit of an anomaly in their back catalogue though, the rest is much harder rock/metal!

And I'm enjoying the other things I've heard from them very much (currently LIVING for Huuda!). Maailman is still their highlight, fantastic song, so glad you found it, I would have missed out on some great Finnish pop-rock otherwise, and I always like that sort of thing. :D

16. PSY - Gangnam Style

Chart run: 42-28-14-1-2-2-7-15-28

My first ever K-pop chart topper, it's quite refreshing that a foreign language song can still top the charts in the UK (and go close to doing so in the US!), although it has a pretty wide appeal which completely breaks down any language barrier. With what's easily my favourite music video of the year, PSY's famous horse dance and zany sense of humour, and the 'heyyyy sexy lady, Oppan gangnam style!' refrain, the song has so much going for it. I remember first hearing the song months ago and discussing with somebody at work (when it wasn't even top 100 on iTunes), that I felt that the song would probably get quite a bit bigger in the coming months - little did we know just how big of course, it's surely set to be the highest selling non-English language song EVER?!! And if it opened many people's eyes and ears to K-pop then it's certainly done it's job, novelty or not, LMFAO rip-off or not...

15. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe

Chart run: 34-OUT-54-60-OUT-33-25-11-7-4-2-5-8

'Earworm' of the year, Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe first came to my attention in September 2011 where it charted at #34 for me, making a good first impression but soon falling away. I liked it a lot and briefly considered it for BJSC but found the strings a little too stuttered at first. Justin Bieber heard it and pushed it and the rest is history and I soon got caught up in the hype and though 'wow this is actually a GREAT pop song that I shouldn't have overlooked'. I'm all for pure pop returning to the masses and Call Me Maybe is as sweet and sugary as it gets, as is Carly herself, who has clearly been drinking from the fountain of youth, looking a good 8 or 9 years younger than she actually is! Definitely one of 2012's future classics, cheers Bieber! Ignore the bizarre chart run for it, my chart was a top 20 at the time and the 8-out of top 20 fall was due to it being caught up at the peak of Eurovision season!
