December 24, 201212 yr Author Some stats: 44 of the songs are sung by females, I'm not sure but I'd imagine that's a record high. Exactly half of the songs in the 100 are by acts who've never reached my End of Year chart before. 2 of the acts have only appeared once before, back on the first chart 10 years ago. 29 of the songs made the UK top 75, 19 of them are top 40 hits and there are four UK number one singles. 3 acts have three entries, a further 16 acts are here twice. The songs which just miss out on a top 100 place are: Alt-J 'Fitzpleasure' Beach House 'Myth' Fiction Faction 'Nina's Different' The Horrors 'Changing The Rain' Jessie Ware 'Night Light' Jessie Ware 'Running' Los Campesinos! 'Hello Sadness' Purity Ring 'Lofticries' Rudimental ft. John Newman & Alex Clare 'Not Giving In' School of Seven Bells 'The Night' 7 of those songs are by acts that are in the top 100.

One week wonder Swedish House mafia are at 99 with the only instrumental in the chart 'Greyhound', I thought it was alright when it was first out but it's something that's grown and grown over the course of the year, without a doubt one of the best club hits of the year. Arctic Monkeys extend their lead of most amount of chart entries as 'Black Treacle', fourth single from their fourth album, makes it a dozen top 100 entries for them. Reverend & The Makers and Veronica Falls also chart, making the top 100 where 'Bad Feeling' just missed out for the rather joyous indie-pop band.

It's certainly one of the highlights of their 2012 acapella album, and the only cover on it that's of neither a recent song or a song which is at least decades old, the original coming out in 1994 by Richard Thompson. Django Django get their first entry and No Doubt follow, their first release for nearly a decade and their first entry here for a decade, it's a superb pop song that deserved far more attention that it got. Album #1 Perfume Genius follow with 'Take Me Home', unfortunately one of the weakest songs on the album.
December 24, 201212 yr Swedish House Mafia have never had a hit in your chart prior to 'Greyhound'? Will be keeping an eye on this chart as it progresses. Remember being surprised at seeing 'Telephone' as your #1 of 2010 as I'd expected 'Not In Love' to get the honour.

Remember being surprised at seeing 'Telephone' as your #1 of 2010 as I'd expected 'Not In Love' to get the honour. They had in my personal chart, but 'Greyhound' is their first to make my End of Year chart, though I love 'One (Your Name)' now, but I never really paid any attention to it in 2010. Looking back 'Not In Love' is definitely my favourite song of 2010 now, but it was just that bit too recent come the end of the year. I'd still rank 'Telephone' second though! :D

Somewhat bizarrely, it wasn't until I saw the cover version by Walk Off The Earth that I really clicked with it, a wonderfully simple song which has deserved success this year. There's a first entry for Polica with 'Dark Star', a song which has surprised me looking back at how good its chart run is compared to how much I like it (or ever have liked it). The 5th single from 2011 album of the year 'Every Kingdom', 'Old Pine' also spent two weeks at #4, but it is his weakest single of the five released. It took me an age to really get 'Someone Purer', though as the chart run suggests I liked it a bit for a while, but it's grown to be one of their best singles, a definite grower. Rounding off this 5 is another big hit, for Emeli Sande. I always thought there was a good song somewhere in 2011s 'Read All About It', it turned out there was, a simple but emotive piano ballad, one of the few songs of hers I don't actually find boring, though it's easy to see why others might.
December 24, 201212 yr Great to see 'Greyhound' sneaking in despite the lack of success in your actual charts :D 2 acts that I've sent to BJSC this year as well (although neither are the actual songs). Can't get into Blood Red Shoes apart from 'Cold' which I really like. I have heard other songs of theirs (incl. 'In Time To Voices') but they don't interest me in the slightest.

Two of these have more to come, three don't. HAERTS is something I plucked out of a couple of other people's charts and is something I really enjoyed, reminds me of other things but I'm never quite sure what. Beautifully poppy though. 'Matilda' is the latest in a line of decent singles for Alt-J, their third best of five. 2:54 are remarkably consistent with their debut album, 'Creeping' is as catchy as anything on it. 'Hurts Like Heaven' was always an obvious single from 'Mylo Xyloto', a definite standout on their poorest album, should really have been third over 'Charlie Brown'. Howler are most like The Strokes on 'Back of Your Neck' from the beginning of the year.

Another 'to get' album is Dutch Uncles, 'Fester' is the first track I've heard by the Stockport band but it's a wonderful slice if indie pop that would be suited better to a summer's day, if this and new single 'Flexxin' are anything to go by their third album due for release in early 2013 will be a good one. Their not massively dissimilar to The Shins when they're at their poppiest, and they are on 'The Rifle's Spiral', the closest thing on 'Port of Morrow' to 2007's exceptional duo 'Australia' and 'Turn On Me'. Hot Chip get their first entry this year with their best song for a while, and Josh Osho finishes off, discovered him on Jools Holland, a brilliant voice but few good songs. 'Redemption Days' is wonderful but the album has put me right off him, would probably have been looking for top 50 if I hadn't downloaded it.

Maximo Park make a welcome return after 5 years of releasing crap with 'Hips & Lips', Santigold appears for the first time with a song I didn't really get into until I heard the album and Polica are the first act to appear twice the year, 'Lay Your Cards Out' finishing 18 places higher than the follow-up single 'Dark Star'. The other song here is the first personal chart number one to appear from Cave Painting, being released in the early part of the year, it pretty much got there by default as there wasn't a great deal decent out then. The first three of this years 16 number ones are the first three to appear, all of them significantly behind the other 13.

First up is one of the most odd top 40 hits of the year from B.Traits, sounds so wonderfully 90s it's an utterly brilliant dance track. I'd say it should've been more successful but I'm alarmed it made the top 40 anyway. Next is the third best number one single of the year from Florence + The Machine with some help from Calvin Harris. 'Spectrum' was always one of the better tracks on an album I found disappointing, but it lacked a certain something, that certain something was a remix from the trusted Calvin Harris, it gave the song more life and works so much better. It's a great combination that was used too good effect later in the year too, although 'Sweet Nothing' isn't as good. This is the third time a song has made my end of year chart because of a Calvin Harris remix. 2:54 get their second appearance with recent (and best) single 'Sugar', Alabama Shakes enter with 'Hold On', an excellent blues-rock introductory single, one of the few decent iTunes free giveaways (one more to come much later) and finally another song which never made my personal chart, I was quite quick to dismiss 'Primadonna' and the whole of this Marina & The Diamonds era, but one day I heard it out and it just clicked all of a sudden, and it's continued to grow on me since. I'm still quite happy to pronounce everything else I've heard from this era as crap though.

There's also a lovely BJSC discovery in there from Susanne Sundfør, wonderfully haunting and already certain to have an entry higher in my 2013 End of Year list! There are 4th hits too for Fixers and Plan B, both of them having previously had three in one year. Fixers last year and 'Majesties Ranch' suffers the same fate as 'Rio' by being an underperforming number one but did get there because of a lack of competition. 'Ill Manors' is superb from Plan B, not generally bothered by his rapping but superb lyrically, brilliant theme and incredibly delivered.
