December 27, 201212 yr Author Don't really like 'Hips And Lips' that much, Maxïmo Park have gone a bit downhill since 'Our Earthly Pleasures'. Yay for 'Disparate Youth' and 'Lay Your Cards Out'. 'Lay Your Cards Out' definitely their best single but still think there's 2 or 3 stronger on the album. 'Hips & Lips' definitely their best since 'Our Velocity'/'Books From Boxes', first song since then I've wanted to revisit. Disparate Youth. *.* Fantastic - it keeps getting better every time, I had no idea Santi could be that good. (and it is so high on mine) It really is great. I'm not sure how I ever thought it wasn't really, the intro alone is worth a top 100 place! Here's what I like from your countdown so far: 98 Arctic Monkeys 'Black Treacle' 95 Wonder Villains 'Ferrari' (my love of WV is well documented   ) 93 Django Django 'Hail Bop' 90 Gotye 'Somebody That I Used To Know' 84 Alt-J 'Matilda' 83 2:54 'Creeping' 81 Howler 'Back of Your Neck' 76 Josh Osho 'Redemption Days' Thanks, that's a decent amount. Really like Ferrari, but as I said, I find them quite hit and miss, but they are very good when they hit so I shall keep listening to their material.

But 'Angels' is lovely, and definitely the standout track from their second album. The Maccabees are the final act who have three entries to make an appearance, with middle single 'Feel To Follow' being the weakest. It's a great song that builds wonderfully, yet half of the album is better, a real show of just how strong 'Given To The Wild' is. iamamiwhoami charts with 'Goods', a great song which is about as upbeat as she gets on 'Kin' and there's another great track from Gorillaz, one of two Damon Albarn entries this year. Featuring LCD Soundystem's James Murphy and Outkast's Andre 3000 it's a typical Gorillaz fare, well written, catchy and vocalists that complement each other well.

It's very different for them, gradually building throughout, given that it's Muse it feels like it should explode at any point but I think by never really doing that it manages to make it more special. Whilst 'Madness' doesn't sound like that much of Muse, 'Songs About Your Girlfriend' and 'Like a Dancer' are very Los Campesinos! and The Enemy respectively, and that's what makes them great. They showcase the bands at what they do band, punchy, catchy and with a chorus that will stay in your head all day. Hot Chip's recent single 'Don't Deny Your Heart' is the strongest from the album, with another rather great Peter Serafinowicz directed video, again it's classic Hot Chip showcasing what they do best. '110%' and Jessie Ware infact I just never paid the attention they deserved, a great song I unfortunately never made any time for until downloading the album significantly after is release, a shame really. Superb pop music, rightfully highly rated, if only she were the successful Jessie around.

I've never paid much attention to anything by Orbital before, they were a little before my time and don't appear to have had a hit I'd recognise, helped by a wonderful vocal from Zola 'New France' is one of many excellent dance anthems in here. There's another fairly big chart it to appear in the form of '212' by Azealia Banks, emerging initially towards the end of last year it's something I've enjoyed throughout the year, though not the radio edit, that many blanks just doesn't work. A third hit overall for Alpines with 'Gold', as they continued their brilliant run of singles in the spring, a run which has gone on since. 'Everybody's On The Run' was by far the standout song on Noel Gallagher's self-titled album from the first time I listened to it, a shame it took so long for him to release it but it did become a minor chart hit, reminds me of how good Oasis could be. Maximo Park's releases this year reminded me when they were last good, an indie anthem followed-up by something more mellow. This time, the mellower song wins out, 'The Undercurrents' being something a lot more special and taking more time before I realised just how good it is.

'We Got It Wrong' is a wonderful combination of sounds and I seem to find something else in the song each time I listen to it, it's excellent to pay lots of attention to and St. Lucia is an apt name for the group, the make me long for the beach. 'Goodbye Kiss' was always the one song that truly stood out on Kasabian's fourth album, and so I was delighted when it was the final single from it, it shows a different side to them and is really rather lovely. As I said earlier, a lack of excellent stuff at the beginning of the year meant songs made the top of my chart which might not otherwise have done, and the first three number ones are all a long way below the others. 'Pelican' benefited from being from an excellent album, it is great but they have better to come. It was the perfect lead single though, sounded different enough from the last album but like it was the same band. The rest of the album showed better progression. This five rounds off with two electronic synthpop songs from Grimes and CHVRCHES, both quite instant songs but also growers too, there's something special about them that hooks straight away but offers more with repeated listens.

It was one hell of a grower though. The first time I heard 'Last Night I...' in January I felt it was poor, a vastly inferior James Blake. But that soon changed, I began to really like it and see the James Blake comparison as sheer laziness, and as the year has gone on it's continued to become more specials. The first song here is 'Wonder', the follow-up to 'Heaven' I always wanted and had to wait so long for, it was well worth the wait and I thought it was going to be a masive smash hit, but it's chart performance was rather poor given Emeli's stature this year. 'The Keepers' is probably quite simple (for want of a better word) for a Santigold song, but it's one which is ridiculously enjoyable and very sing-a-long, perfect amongst the more challenging songs on the album. The incredible vocals on 'Breezeblocks' give Alt-J their second of three entries, and an excellent use of sampling and narration see Public Service Broadcasting fall just short of the top 30 with my Xmas number 2 'Everest'.

Ben Howard is the only act to have two songs in the top 30 (a feat he manages for the second year running) with 'The Wolves', one of the standouts from 'Every Kingdom' from first listen. Jay-Z & Kanye West chart for the second year running with the years best rap single (though not the highest rap song on the countdown), incredible lyrics, wonderfully quotable, exceptional beats. I can see why a lot of people like 'No Church...' more, but for me 'Paris' is leagues above everything else on the album, and its shown remarkable longevity in the public eye this year. The return of Yeasayer earlier this year completely passed me by for which is a crying shame as the best song on the album was released four months before it, 'Henrietta' builds so exceptionally throughout. We finish here with 'Losing You' by Beyonce's sister Solange. It strikes me as a song which in a years time I'll probably wish I put quite a bit higher, but given I only downloaded it exactly a month ago today, it's just too fresh to put higher just yet. I almost think it's as good as 'Cosmic Journey', and that's an exceptional song.

The fourth of sixteen personal chart number ones to appear comes from Kindness, with 'That's Alright, based heaving around 'Still Smoking' by Trouble Funk from 1986. iamamiwhoami released the whole of 'Kin' individually in fairly quick succession and I only charted the ones I liked most rather than all, 'Idle Talk' being my ultimate favourite of them and the one which made me think that I might end up liking the project a lot, it was certainly the song that kick started it for me. Just missing the top 20 is the second highest song I never charted, 'Wildest Moments' from Jessie Ware. I was exceptionally late to the party when it came to her but at least I got there in the end, an impressive debut, some excellent singles, but the way 'Wildest Moments' builds makes it more special than the rest. The other song here is actually a few years old but, like at least 99% of the population, 'Harder Than You Think' was brought to my attention thanks to Channel 4s Paralympics coverage. London 2012 was an incredible two months and it really showcased some stunning music during that time, 'Harder Than You Think' making the UK top 5 because of it and being the perfect soundtrack, it's inspirational, and is an excellent hip-hop group at their best.

I wasn't wrong, it was like most Alpines singles but everything was a bit better, the music more haunting, the vocals more powerful. Given their success with Sub Focus on 'Tidal Wave' I live in hope they can be big in 2013. Radiohead are a band I've never really liked save for the odd single from the 90s, I've always understood the appeal, but they're not for me at all. Released a a AA side, I first paid attention to the other song 'The Daily Mail'. Safe to say if the subject matter was anything else I wouldn't have given it anywhere near as much time. I happened to catch 'Staircase' on the radio, it was a couple of weeks later and I was hooked from first listen. If you're familiar with it it sounds quite similar to lead singer Thom Yorke's debut solo single 'Harrowdown Hill' from 2006, the only other Radiohead related song I've liked from the 21st century. No matter how many listens it never gets boring. Songs like this really make me wish I could get the rest of their material.

The second of three Olympic songs comes from Elbow, in the form of the BBCs theme tune, a piece of music which brings back so many wonderful memories to so many people, but one they struggled to find to buy. Unavailable from the majority of major retailers and not available on its own anywhere, it prevented them from being given two sizeable hits because of London 2012. It manages to sound like very much like an Elbow song without sounding like one, but the absence of Guy Garvey on vocals isn't a bad thing. The choir works so well, as does the orchestra, the build, the percussion and the ambition, everything that make Elbow great is on this piece of music. The longer version is simply stunning.

It's much more poppy and accessible than most of their material, more 'fun' if you will, but certainly no less brilliant, it just shows how wonderfully versatile they can be. 'Pink Light' ended a four week run at the top for 'Fineshrine' but Purity Ring, this was the moment where I realised that they weren't merely an alright band but they were actually great with the potential for some stunning songs. A great chorus delivered very well and whole host of wonderful stuff going on in the background. This and 'Crawlersout' are their definitive moments.

It's such a marvellous seven minutes of music, so dreamy and delivered in such gentle fashion, the array of guests not hiding what is most definitely an Underworld song. Something a bit more recent is at 13, from the rather excellent Liverpool based Dan Croll. This year has been lacking in decent male solo artists, Ben Howard aside, but Dan Croll offers a lot of hope for 2013. 'From Nowhere' being the most delightful slice of indie pop I've heard in a long time.
