Does anyone remember the Undertones? I was looking up their music recently and came across a video on The Guardian Channel called My City: The Undertones bassist Michael Bradley gives a tour of Derry

I havne't heard much of them recently so I was wondering if anyone knew of any upcoming gigs or something?

they were great, especially teenage kicks, you've got my number, wednesday week & others. Feargal Sharkey is a music industry figure but hasnt sung in decades sadly, I think, though his number one solo A Good Heart is poptastic as apposed to new wavetastic:)

The Undertones are still together, albeit with a new lead singer. As this year sees Derry as the UK City of Culture, expect to be hearing a lot about them in 2013, especially given that the media seems to think they're the only rock band to come out of Derry, much to my chagrin.

I saw what was originally due to be their last ever gig on 9 July 1983 at Selhurst Park (home to Crystal Palace FC). They were supporting Peter Gabriel with the Thompson Twins as an additional support act. A quick Google search reveals that tickets were £8.30 :o Phil Collins turned up to play drums for PG which I think was the first time they'd palyed together since Gabriel left Genesis.

Of course Teenage Kicks was John Peel's favourite song. Accolades don't get much better than that. However, I always preferred Jimmy Jimmy

Singer Feargal Sharkey teamed up with Vince Clarke to make a one-off single as The Assembly

He also featured in a classic live televison cock-up. I've tried to find it on youtube but without success. I think it was on one of Noel Edmonds' Christmas Day programmes that he used to do but it m ay have been another programme. Feargal Sharkey was supposed to be "performing" a song on a plane. Unfortunately the sound didn't work so we could hear the song but Sharkey was just hanging around waiting for his cue

...and that Cashier No 9 record listed (Oh Pity) is just awesome. Downloaded and huge hit in my charts a couple of years back..

sorry - not the undertones but its great anyway!

Great group, I have a compilation album of theirs. Guitarist John O'Neil was perhaps the main songwriter, he wrote Teenage Kicks. Bizarrely, Feargal Sharkey's creative input was just singing, but he has always been the best known member of the band.

Interesting to hear suedehead say that he preferred Jimmy Jimmy to Teenage Kicks. I to like Teenage Kicks, but much prefer You've Got My Number.

As I understand it, the phrase "teenage kicks so hard to beat" is written on John Peel's gravestone.

Excellent band, one of the best out of the punk rock era, and arguably the best band to come out of Northern Ireland.

There's a documentary on about The Undertones on BBC1 Northern Ireland at 10.35pm on Monday. Might be of interest to any fans of the band. I'm sure it'll be on the iPlayer as well for those who can't pick up that channel.

Thanks for that info. Set up to record as I'll probably forget :D

I love the Undertones. They had their style. "Wednesday Week" is my fave track from them. I also like a lot "Teenage Kicks" and "My Perfect Cousin". However, i consider them more like the band who were doing great singles, but didn't manage to do a truely great album (like the Jam did with "All Mod Cons" or "Boomtown Rats" with "The Fine Art of Surfacing"). Each of their albums have 3-4 very good track and the other are fillers.

I think their first S/T album is pretty solid. Not quite as good as any of the Clash, Jam, SLF albums or Nevermind the Bullocks, but still a good one!
