February 3, 201312 yr To be honest, I think it's down to a number of things. First, the venue was tiny (or it definitely SEEMED to be), so we didn't really get that sense of atmosphere that we usually get. Second, the technical difficulties didn't help. It all seemed a tad unorganized. Third, Danny is awful as a presenter. And finally, most of the songs were shit. YOHIO really was the star of the show.
February 3, 201312 yr Looking back on last night, I can't help feel like Melodifestivalen is losing some of it's spark - I know it's only 1 heat in, and Semi 1 (Loreen and imo Marie aside) was pretty poor last year, but even looking ahead at future weeks, there isn't much that makes me think 'ooh, I can't wait'. They were never my favourites, but it feels like it's losing some of it's Swedish charm, as we're losing some real pop/schlager gems that Sweden deliver so well - instead we're being given all sorts of different genres to try and appeal to all crowds, but with a lot less 'wow'. David is this years 'big' pop male - and his dance-pop track seems a lot weaker than You're Out Of My Life/Popular/Amazing. I still love it, I just hope it picks up, because it was lacking that MF spark last night for me. I wasn't that keen on You're Out Of My Life, Darin's done far better and it's a shame that the one time he participated in MF he did so with a ballad. Love Killer would have been an AMAZING entry though. I sort of know what you mean but I'm sure I'll be whipped up in the hype come week 4 or the final, I always am in the end. 2008/9 were the best MF years for me, packed full of huge pop songs. I can see what you mean about more diversity coming at the expense of great songs but I guess it's a TV show at the end of the day and the more people that they can appeal to, the bigger ratings they'll get. They're a bit lacking in star names this year, in fact half of the people in the final heat I've never heard of before, I can just hope that they've got brilliant songs to compensate. I'm surprised that more stars didn't want to get involved, considering they winner has got a bye to the Eurovision final and a guaranteed audience of 125 million.
February 3, 201312 yr And it's exactly why Melodifestivalen has become SO popular around europe in the past few years. It's silly to only have schlager and pop competing really. Sweden is better than that surely? Oh, I don't want just schlager and pop - that would be silly, of course. I love a bit of variation, but the quality of all these variants seem a lot weaker PERSONALLY. You're Out Of My Life was SHIT as a big pop male track! And Melodifestivalen always HAS been pretty varied. The idea that schlager and classic Swedish pop predominates has been nothing more than a myth for a good few years - since 2007 at least. The difference is that now a lot of the songs could conceivably hit the charts, which is the way Eurovision's going as well. We're still getting distinctive entries, so I don't see that as a bad thing per se. And given you've only really been watching for two years I don't see THAT much of a difference between this first heat and a lot from the last couple Rob, so it seems a bit of an echo judgement! Oh, I loved You're Out Of My Life  And, as I said to Pavel, I do WANT variance, I don't want just pop & schlager, don't get me wrong - but while I do want Melodifestivalen to be modern, and to be made of stuff that will do well in charts - the schlager entries, that wouldn't do aswell, made it feel so Swedish, and I loved that touch to it. I know I've only been watching it since 2011 which probably does make that whole paragraph seem a bit odd - but I remember in 2011, the first heat. Try Again, Me & My Drum, Something In Your Eyes, Oh My God and In The Club - all great tracks, and that was the first semi I'd watched, having only seen the 2010 final - and it was that semi that got me hooked. Last year was a weak semi, but had the amazing Euphoria in it - this felt lacking of any AMAZING track to get me excited, even if there were lots of really good tracks. This is all completely a personal opinion, on the whole the show probably isn't getting worse at all, but I'm looking at the next 3 semis without even acts that I'm looking forward to. I couldn't wait for 'Amazing' last year, and of course, it delivered on a grand scale for me. I'll feel free to eat my words by the end of Semi 4 though, when I'm creaming over a Janet Leon/Anton Ewald/Ulrik Munther track that I hadn't anticipated to completely fall in love with.
February 3, 201312 yr I do agree there's less to be excited about this year (as with last year really), I also thought there'd be more big stars going for it this year. I'm really excited for Erik/Tone and especially Amanda Fondell but aside from those there aren't any 'omg I can't WAIT' moments, as I expected this year really with Sweden being the hosts and all.
February 3, 201312 yr Author A lot of people seem turned off or far less excited by the lack of big names (there are stars aplenty in here: we just haven't heard of them because they're pretty much Sweden-exclusive), but I really see it as a renewal of that we're getting in a lot of new and upcoming artists. I'd take YOHIO, My Heart Is Refusing Me, and Manboy any day over a half-baked Bengtzing return.
February 3, 201312 yr So far from the bits I can understand, Loreen won last year AND won eurovision, Danny was really good but didn't get there, and is spending the next 6 weeks getting "it" rubbed in his face (I'm not sure what "it" is though.) The Swedish version of Euphoria was really good, even if I don't think it was an actual translation, Gina is just hilarious. Danny is a metrosexual apparently, not a homosexual despite liking to dance in gay clubs? Did I hear that correctly? Anyway now they are talking about his glowing penis/underwear. Anyway time for Song 1. I am glad they have the runway intro songs back again, David is a dancer and singer or is he a singer and dancer, even he doesn't know. There is some serious hand choreography going on here, from his yellow bandanna in his back right pocket, he implies he is a submissive fan of watersports. Still wearing the same clothes as when he sang Shout It Out, singing a slightly better version of that song but worse than a song that beat it last year (Amazing). Danny has now changed his outfit and looks much much better for it, why is this not the Danny show? Time for song 2, by Cookies and Beans... Really? What an odd mix. Oh girl with a guitar? Not sure how far that will get them. What is with the blue rug/curtain combo. Anyway I am bored of these bints now.
February 3, 201312 yr Ah Gina is back, I miss Sarah though, her back and forth with Gina last year was so good. Anyway time for song 3, he hasn't even got on stage yet and I am bored of him. His shirt is too big for him and not enough buttons are done up on it. This is really dull and needs to finish bottom of this heat but will probably get it's way into AC. GET YOUR WORDS OUT DANNY! Time for song 4, is this girl that won The Voice? Anyway straight away she is coming across like a female Sean Banan, which is alright as his song last year has gone on to be one of my songs that motivates me at the gym, so we can accept this. Very repetitive, meh it was alright.
February 3, 201312 yr Author How the fuck is Mary N'Diaye anything LIKE Sean Banan?! For a start she isn't a WALKING ADVERT FOR IRANIAN ABORTION LAW REFORM
February 3, 201312 yr Moving onto song 5. Could we actually show another countries selection process? Would that be allowed? I would love to see this on British TV. Anyway this song is alright, I am not too fussed for the performance or the actual act though. Ooooh he has made use of the runway. WOW! Anyway song 6, I thought this was a girl... It's apparently male though. Awkward... Anyway I really don't like the styling of it, and if it was styled as such I don't think you would all be loooooning over the song so much. The image really doesn't fit the song at all. Yes I know contrast is good but this is just a bit jarring. Oh now it it's raining glitter! Now over to the suddenly manly looking Danny, who I would still like to sex me, for the introduction to song 7.
February 3, 201312 yr (and she was only a semi-finalist) Well at least I now know one result :P Cause I defiantly aren't watching this now, I'm just randomly posting my comments 25hours later than everyone else. Edited February 3, 201312 yr by Martyn
February 3, 201312 yr Author Well at least I now know one result :P Cause I defiantly aren't watching this now, I'm just randomly posting my comments 25hours later than everyone else. No, I meant she was only a semi-finalist on The Voice, not the winner.
February 3, 201312 yr Anyway time for song #7, some old woman who looks very lost. Has she misplaced the bus home. Anyway it's standard boring ballad. It's pleasant but meh. Some awkward dancing there from the host... OMG WHY IS THERE A MAN CARRYING A TRUMPET!? Oh I was hoping she would be able to sing after all this, ah that explains the saxaphone (it's a brass instrument, I don't care for specifics) The singer looks a bit lost on that stage, she looks like she needs a hug. You too can claim first credit on the song by just playing an instrument. Anyway time for the recap from our good friend the narrator.
February 3, 201312 yr Author Also, out of interest, has anybody got any rips of the 2:30 clips/live performances yet?
February 3, 201312 yr No, I meant she was only a semi-finalist on The Voice, not the winner. Whoops, oh even so I would expect her to be able to sing better. I would say about the semi finalists on the UK version of the voice but I am not even sure I could name anyone on that show other than Vince Kid. Meanwhile back in Meldofestivalen we are having some technical issues with everyone being shown as having the number for Skyline, if this was in the UK there would be an ofcom investigation underway about now, it seems to be fixed and we are back to recapping ahoy!
February 3, 201312 yr Oh we had a "Big In Japan" that doesn't make you any less annoying, POD would have a field day with him.
February 3, 201312 yr Author I think The Voice was quite big in Sweden, I'm not certain though. Leave YOHIO alone
February 3, 201312 yr So we now have Danny looking gayer than ever, (who is Eva Hamilton) via a suit, in some rubber looking leggings and we now have his entire crotch bejeweled... If he had only done that last year he might have won Melodifestivalen... haha or not.
