While we learned a few days ago the release of a 3rd Volume of Under The Radar for the end of the year, I propose to return to the genesis of the first 2 volumes.

 

 

What is Under The Radar?

 

Officially, the albums "Under The Radar" are for songs that have not found their place on previous albums Robbie. This does not mean that these titles were bad, but that these titles did not fit the themes or the musical styles that Robbie had set for each album.

 

What are the supposed "source" albums?

 

If we exclude the different best of and albums lives, Robbie has recorded to date 11 studio albums (9 pop albums and 2 swing albums). During the recording of these 11 albums, Robbie worked with a multitude of producers. But in reality, which songs are retained?

 

As we saw above, if we stick to the definition of what should be an album "Under The Radar" and if we take into account the list of different composers with whom Robbie worked, we should find in these albums "Under The Radar", compositions from very different periods and recorded with many composers.

 

But it is clear that this is not really the case.

 

Of the 29 titles in the first 2 volumes, most of the producers Robbie worked with in the past are absent. We think in particular of the titles recorded with Stephen Duffy, or with Owen Morris, Chris Abbot, Antony Genn ...

 

On Volume 1, Guy Chambers is still present, with 6 titles, but no title on volume 2. Guy Chambers has also indicated that he was not very supportive of this type of album.

 

Some songs are recorded with members of Robbie's band: Jerry Meehan, Robbie's early career guitarist Fil Eisler, Karl Brazil. A title is written by Gary Barlow (title surely recorded in 2012 when Robbie wanted to release a duet album with Gary).

 

3 tracks are composed by the Mold brothers (Kelvin and Danny), two friends of Robbie and authors of many Robbie hits in the past.

 

But above all, 11 titles are composed by the Australian duo, Flynn Francis and Tim Metcalfe, who worked on the albums Take The Crown and The Heavy Entertainment Show.

 

So we conclude that the albums Under The Radar are not at all representative of the work of Robbie, contrary to what the singer wants us to believe. Most of the titles on the first 2 volumes actually come from the recording sessions of the last 2 albums: Take The Crown and The Heavy Entertainment Show.

 

We can also consider some titles. For example: was the title "Bully" really recorded during the "Take The Crown" session, or was it recorded specifically for the "Café Royal" advertising campaign?

 

Another disturbing element: most titles appeared on the first 2 volumes of Under The Radar, had not been registered with ASCAP (American equivalent of Sacem), while many titles listed at ASCAP have not yet been selected for Under The Radar volumes. To date, the number of titles still unpublished and listed at ASCAP is estimated at 157.

 

Why such a choice ?

 

So why does Robbie present these albums as being from old recording sessions?

 

First, he does not lie completely: some titles are really old (those recorded with Guy Chambers, or even the title composed with Fil Eilser, a former member of the group).

 

Then we can imagine that it is impossible to return to the studio with composers with whom he is not in contact at all. Some rumors indicate that Robbie would be "angry" with Stephen Duffy (Intensive Care), and he is surely no longer in contact with the producers of the beginning (Owen Morris, Chris Abbot, Antony Genn ....)

 

Besides, we know that Robbie recorded a lot of songs during the recording sessions of the last 2 albums. Robbie mentioned several numbers: at least 50 titles would have been set aside during these recording sessions.

 

And Under The Radar Volume 3, then?

 

In conclusion, the albums Under The Radar have for the moment given pride to the last 2 pop albums of Robbie, and not to the whole of his career. According to the first elements that we have, it appears that the 3rd volume will still be dedicated mainly to recent titles: the two Australian Flynn Francis and Tim Metcalfe were still in the studio recently with Robbie. Let's hope that this album will contain one or two songs composed before 2012.

Yes I'm reading some criticism.

 

The Glocks make guns. How does it parry with Soccer Aid etc etc.

 

But I admire him too much in having raised £24M to even consider for one second criticising him for it.

 

Freedom of speech is good though.

Robbie I believe is a personal friend of the family , we all know about the gun connection but I know them more for their interest in horses & showjuomping

 

Some people do not like RW full stop so criticism is nothing new, you should see what they say when he tours in Israel
