To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Madonna's seventh studio album Ray of Light, Song of the Week brings you the five official singles from that era...

Background

A Madonna-Leonard-Orbit production, Frozen was a huge change from the classic pop-dance Madonna from the 80s, having a more darker and personal mood. Madonna also embarked on a new vocal range after the lessons she took in preparation for her Evita role. This transformation, however, was very strongly received by music critics and fans alike, resulting in Frozen being considered one of her best songs.

It's tremendous chart success echoed the praise, reaching the Top 10 in all charting countries including #1 in Finland, Italy, Spain and UK and #2 in Austria, Canada, France, Germany and US. The reason for the number of #2 peaks was mostly due to Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On. In the UK, Frozen became Madonna's first single to debut at number one and also became, and still is, her highest debut sales for a single with only a few thousand off 200k sold in its first week. Frozen has since sold enough copies to place it #9 on Madonna's all-time best selling singles.

Madonna included Frozen on her Drowned World Tour, Re-invention Tour and Sticky and Sweet Tour, the latter sampling Open Your Heart and Calvin Harris' I'm Not Alone.

Opinion

Frozen is my third favourite single taken from Ray of Light, but I certainly have no complaints about it being dubbed her best ever single, as it is so different to her other material which makes it real special when I listen to it. You can tell she's had vocal lessons as on the live versions of Frozen as she sings it perfectly. Great choice of lead single too, really sets the mood for the album.

Frozen was such an amazing comeback track ! I remember at the time of release the song was all over tv and radio ! I remember being very optimistic that it would go to number 1.

The video is simply one of her best , I don't probably listen to this song as much as I should ! Was a shame that all the copyright issues have come about in recent years!

I don't listen to it as much either, but I guess that helps make it sound more special when I do listen to it. The video is great too.
Great song, I'm not an avid listener either but it's great when I do hear. The live performances were excellent I think my favourite is the Re - Invention tour just her singing infront of a microphone and a stunning corset, excellent vocals and a great backdrop. As for S&S09 that was great too it shows what a great dancer she is and how good frozen mixes with I'm not alone.
