Nightwish - Storytime - 1 week

 

Commentary: Nightwish hold on this week almost by default, but with Lana Del Rey's Born To Die increasing again, surely its time at the top is limited. The week's biggest new release comes from the return of Alesha Dixon, a singer who has always done well in my affections, her last #1 coming just over a year ago with Radio.

The resurgence of Owl City's album track Honey And The Bee sees it claim a place in the top 5, making it the joint-highest peaking song from All Things Bright And Beautiful along with lead single Alligator Sky, with Little Mix filling the top 5 up.

Just announced as my biggest hit of 2011, and with its impending chart success in the UK, Titanium races back into the top 10. They shoot me down, but I don't fall....

Commentary: Owl City proves to be a brilliant grower (considering I've had the track for over 6 months now), and finally gets Owl City a second #1 on my chart. Ariana Grande's debut single goes straight in at two, while the previous #1, Nightwish, falls to 3. Another Nightwish track enters lower down at #6. The most notable climber is Gotye, truly this is the week of the growers, it leaps up to #4.

Séyetanian Canadian singer Alyssa Reid is on the verge of the top 10 also, as are the Scissor Sisters. Commentary: This week's chart, the same as many others, but more pronounced, is now the week of the songs which I never thought would get popular in the UK when I first heard them, but now are insanely popular beyond my wildest dreams. Turn Loose The Mermaids stays at the top for a second week, as the chart expands to a top 75 (temporarily of course) to deal with the volume of new entries I'm getting from the combined forces of Eurovision, BJSC, Unknown Pleasures, with a few popular songs as well. Euphoria and Bad Girls head up the charge into the top 10, with strong debuts at #2 and #3. Some Selena Gomez album track makes a jump into the top 10, I'm being honest here, it's amazing.

A lot of Nightwish album tracks decide to enter here, also a couple of their older songs (For a 14-minute track, I'd listened to The Poet And The Pendulum loads this week, so that's enough to put it in, also Amaranth). And Secret Garden follows it in as I was introduced to it the other day... (they are disadvantaged by being older, it's a one week acknowledgement really).

These Nightwish people are unstoppable, aren't they. 2nd single The Crow, The Owl And The Dove flies to the top of the chart. Pun duly noted, song also contains a swan. I suppose that 'The Crow, The Owl, The Dove and The Swan' would have been a little too ridiculous as a title. Poor swan.

In other news a mirror appears in my top 10. It's catchy, ok. Never thought I'd be saying that about a Lil Wayne song, but there you go. Billy The Kid (:wub:) and Redlight are the other additions to the top 10.

Ass Back Home is quite catchy, also Sprawl, which I decided to give a chance to as it has a UK release date. Pleasantly surprised there.

When I Held Ya is destined to be THE BJSC entry from XLI that I'm regretting not even giving a commisseration in my votes. See also Show Me, Wear It Like A Crown, Little Numbers and Jane Doe. Although, Still and Only One are running it quite close...

Commentary: Double Nightwish is knocked down by Alyssa Reid, who clearly has the best song this week, with a heart-wrenching song using Heart's Alone chorus, perfect in every way, can stand high up against the original, brought it up to date, and fully deserving of its #2 peak in the UK and it's #1 peak here. Long success and health to you, Alyssa. You truly are the second coming of pop music. Now release The Game and complete your dominance.

 

Besides, anyone who doesn't like this has clearly never listened to it under a clear sky just before the sun sets, (and just after listening to Twilight :D) and just letting yourself go. #notguaranteedtowork

 

Elsewhere, the Minaj enters with a spacey/beachey themed track. Ah, who am I kidding, it's the rap version of any Katy Perry track you care to name. But it's really good.

 

Ass Back Home and Live Tomorrow climb themselves into the top 10, with Xenia snapping at their heels. All the top 15 I'd currently rate 10/10, it's really good this week. Hyper Crush and a number of Eurovision/Melodifestivalen songs make up the majority of the new entries, but there's also a bit of mainstream synchronising too.

It's all change with a total of 22 new entries. Well, 23, as Kaskade's entry I've made a double A-Side as I love Eyes (the song, I'm not that much of a narcissist) but never charted it. That'll help Room For Happiness out here quite a bit.

Commentary: And so Cover Drive overhaul Loreen to gain their first #1. It took a while, but they're here now. And here to stay, on the 'Eyes Top 75' at least. Taylor Swift gains her first top 5 with Eyes Open, while a load of Eurovision amazingness crams into the lower half of the top 10.

Commentary: Having seen the Hunger Games and loving it yesterday, the Taylor Swift songs do well as well as a 2nd entry for Arcade Fire on my chart with Abraham's Daughter. Sparks holds strong at the top as Euphoria threatens to return to #1, with 30 Days, Never Forget and a re-entry from Call Me Maybe being the changes to the top 10.

 

My BJSC entry re-enters from a time before I had a chart, all I know is it peaked at #1 once. ^_^

 

And I just discovered that Aura Dione - Friends has been the second single and done well in Germany. So me picking it as a #1 months in advance was inspired. :D

Loreen falls to #2 with a good debut from Poppy & The Jezebels at #3. Santigold shoots up the chart into #4 and Scissor Sisters make a graceful fall to #5, pushing Sparks out of the top 5 already. :o

 

A big entry for Little Boots, and it's a bit of a quiet chart down below (hence an excellent week for me to finally give Why Start A Fire the peak it so richly deserves).
