43 Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger

First Heard: October 2005

This is another song that I've appreciated more as I've got older. It's got so much emotion that it's utterly impossible to resist or deny. The lyrics are gorgeous and comforting as well, even if they don't really mean anything. It's another anthem that is so human in its approach and too beautiful to ignore. This is definitely up there as one of the most gorgeous songs ever and I can confirm that one more Britpop song is yet to come.

44 The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

First Heard: August 2001

I think this was the first song I ever heard? It's crazy to think about how long ago that actually was. Anyway, this song defines iconic. Everything from the instrumental to the lyrics define perfect and really stuck out to me at a young age. I actually remember thinking how brilliant it was when I was FOUR YEARS OLD. I'm not joking. And cynics might label the song as unoriginal but come on! It's got everything that you want in an anthem and it's bloody incredible. I'll say it again, it's a perfect song with no flaws whatsoever.

41 Pulp - Common People

First Heard: May 2005

I see this as the anthem that really did break Britpop into the mainstream and I'm pleased to say that it's my favourite Britpop song as well. The lyrics are genius, the delivery is exceptional and the feeling of the song is euphoric. It pains me to say that this hasn't made the Top 40, but at least it's not quite as bad as being stuck behind #2 by Robson & Jerome.

42 Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart

First Heard: October 2005

This was actually in my Top Three at some point, until I realised that it wasn't actually as good as I made out it was. Still, it's a wildly emotional song that releases so much frustration and angst that's it utterly impossible to resist. Everything from the verses to the structure to that instrumental before the final chorus is stunning and I'm pleased to say that it's this high up in my chart.

40 The Killers - When You Were Young

First Heard: September 2006

The Killers' second best song is up next. I remember hearing it first on the way home from my grandparents' when it entered the chart at #5, but I never really thought much about it until I actually gave it a proper listen one day last year. Packed with energy and emotion, When You Were Young really does remind you of the old rock songs from the 20th century with added synths of course. It's just a solid rock song with a genius structure and an incredible range of dynamics. The lyrics represent a lot of emotion as well. It's got everything that I want to hear in a song. Perfect doesn't even define it. Utterly stunning in ever single way possible.

39 Kate Nash - Foundations

First Heard: May 2007

I remember hearing this on a music channel for the first time, loving it instantly and gradually getting more obsessed as the summer of 2007 went on. The reaosn why I love this song so much is because it describes frustration that you don't actually want to feel about someone else. The verses are very witty, but when it gets to the chorus, you know that Kate is being serious when she talks about the foundations that her and her partner have. It's possibly the most perfect song I've ever heard from a lyrical perspective and the instrumental really gets the song that added push as well. The fact that it was 16 copies behind the #1 actually physically PAINS me, but I will always have and will continue to have incredible memories about this song as I go through life.

38 The Libertines - Don't Look Back Into The Sun

First Heard: December 2009

I first heard this on a trailer for Gavin And Stacy a few years ago and I instantly thought this was a brilliant tune. It's only grown on me over the years as well, and the reason for that is because it's so simplistic in its approach that it ends up becoming an emotionally charged anthem by the end. I can't really describe exactly why I love it so much, but that guitar riff is so euphoric that I just can't deny it. And by the end of the song, I can't help singing along to it. If you haven't heard it already, please listen to it, because it's incredible in every single way possible. What a bloody brilliant song.

37 Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles

First Heard: January 2003

This was one of the first songs that I ever heard and it was also one of the songs that made me sit up and take notice of music. Whenever I hear this song, I'm transported back to being a six year old eating McDonalds meals up in Edinburgh. And at the time, I knew that this was something important and something that was potentially going to change my life, as stupid as that sounds. But I think that the main reason why I have such a strong connection to this song is because it captures youth and innocence perfectly. It seems like it's an emotional ballad for children and I think that's the reason why I have such a liking for them these days. And the structure of the song is perfect - the way that it builds and builds is very humbling to listen to and I can definitely see why people dislike it but it sums up my childhood perfectly that I will never ever be able to detach myself from this song. It's pure beauty compressed in four minutes and this has definitely led me on a route in my life which I wouldn't be living today if it wasn't for this song. So thank you for everything, Vanessa Carlton.

Let's finish this off. I'm shit at commentary anyway so it doesn't matter too much.
