April 6, 201312 yr Author Interesting dave, where did you get your sales figures from for bmrb period? Spent a few days in their offices in the early 80s. And the same for Record Business Research, too. During 1990, I also went down to Gallup's. I've also did the same for 1970s Panel Sales twice (in 1973 & 1980). Thus comparing RB & BMRB. Record Business attempted to do a chart panel based Best Sellers of the 1970s, But that fail fowl to using BPI figures, from 1970 to 1977 against RB's for 1978 - 79. That one makes incorrect viewing, for the non use of BMRB Panel sales from 70 - 77. I've a correct Chart Panel based BMRB Top 500 of the 70s. Which I may post in the near future.
April 6, 201312 yr Dave, why have you added extra sales to the 1983 Y/E charts? There was a revised chart published for the year (which I believe was sold as a supliment to the normal music week and you had to pay extra for) which was published sometime in early 1984 and included sales to cover the "frozen" chart of 1983.
April 6, 201312 yr Author Dave, why have you added extra sales to the 1983 Y/E charts? There was a revised chart published for the year (which I believe was sold as a supliment to the normal music week and you had to pay extra for) which was published sometime in early 1984 and included sales to cover the "frozen" chart of 1983. Have you got that to hand? I did not see that one, so I added on the extra's from MRIB to cover. The chart for the Best Sellers of 1983, went up to w/k ending 24th Dec, I thought....Or have I added the extra week & didn't need too? Is that what you mean? The chart for 31st Dec 83....Was it compiled then, coz I never saw it at Gallup HQ?
April 6, 201312 yr As someone with a statistics degree and a general geeky interest in chart numbers but no vested interest in any set of figures, I would love to be commissioned by the OCC to liaise with various people with their own figures to come up with a deifinitive list (or as closer to that as it is possible to get). Sadly, I think that will remain a dream :( There are lots of different sets of figures around and lots of people who insist they are right. It really needs some neutral arbiter to try and make sense of it all.
April 7, 201312 yr Author I don't think it's really a dream. The problem is BMRB & Gallup & whatever, probably put all their stuff in a vault soewhere, when they died & Milward Brown, don't have any access to it. It's what happens when they keep changing Market Research companies. The company that started it, should still be compiling the charts for continuity. It's lunacy that figures are way out in later compiled best selling lists (as in the Best Selling Christmas Songs, the other year). We do need to get it into people's heads that "OCC" do NOT compile the charts. The are mearly supervisors, with a hefty stake in paying Milward Brown. This 1983 talk (I believe) to be a myth. From what I have, Gallup didn't compile a chart for this "frozen" week in 1983. Radio One took figures from w/k ending 15th Jan 83 to w/k ending 17th Dec 83. The chart in the special supplement went up to w/k ending 24th Dec 83. Though (in truth) the complete best sellers should cover w/k ending 15th Jan 83 to w/k ending 7th Jan 1984. It could be that (likely) the "frozen" chart is wrongly placed in dates. Gallup would have compiled a chart up to 24th Dec 83 (to be announced on R1 on Tues 27th Dec). R1 wouldn't of used a chart that week....Though they announced one on the next week, which would of been upto 31st Dec 83....Which surely would really be a "frozen" chart for w/k ending 7th Jan 84? Gezza...Have you the run of figures for all the weeks that the Flying Pickets were in the chart & also the Top 10 sales, for the w/k ending 24th Dec 83? Then I can compare. The rest of the years 1980 to 82, make sense (with no missed weeks) & there is no problem with the 1984 to 89 sweep. A note somewhere says "December 84 was the first time Gallup did a chart for every week of the year" & the top sellers of 1984 covered w/k ending 14th Jan 84 to w/k ending 5th Jan 1985. I'll dig them out somewhere, however if you believe them to a myth then why are you interested you seem to have formed an opinion already? I do not say that a chart was ever produced for that "frozen" week (it hasn't as far as I'm aware) but the machines would still have worked and recorded data for the week so it's entirely feasible. As for the adjusted Y/E chart it was never produced in music week, I believe you could send away for it and pay a seperate fee and then they sent it to you (much like they started to do again), it came to light some time last year (possibly the year before). The 1983 chart that was originally produced by MW had the Flying pickets in the 60s I believe for the year (I could be wrong on that one) and then a revised one had them at No 9, this one was never produced by gallup as far as I recall. It was posted on the net years ago as someon'e best guess I believe, and has become "fact" over the years, it actually turned out to be correct when the revised one came to light (though other positions for records big during those 2 weeks did alter to include the remaining chartts in the year). As the frozen chart covered sales up to Christmas (well Christmas eve at any rate) it would have been a bumper week and as Gallup were given the job of making the charts "better" and more "complete" than BMRB I doubt that they would have missed this week especially as they had the technology to hand to deliver the results. Why 1984 is popularly assumed to be the first full week is because RM published the revised copy in its magazine (presumably as the take up rate for the 1983 Y/E was poor?)

The myth I have in mind is that the w/k ending 7th Jan 84 is the actual chart, for the w/k ending 31st Dec 83. (As in) up to the sales to 24th Dec. Hence why Frank Kelly, George Cole etc are still climbing. That is the opinion I have in mind. I'm not knocking your figures. I'd just like to compare them to what I have to see, which week likely may have really missed a chart. The Radio One show had Flying Pickets at 26 for the year. The one you refer to has them at #9. The MRIB Top 50 of 1983, has them at #4.

It would explain why the chart of 14/01/84 had so many climbers and was rather volatile if in reality two weeks rather than one had passed since the last chart sales week. However I did a quick check: on the 07/01/84 chart 'A Rockin' Good Way' by Shaky and Bonnie is new at number 57, I checked to see if I could find a release date and at 45cat.com it lists the date of release as being 30 December 1983 which indicates it is a chart with sales to 31/12/83. http://www.45cat.com/record/a4071

Thanks for that useful piece of info. Looking at the Top 100 for the year & the send away supplement, "Victims" & Culture Club is #98. This indicates that that chart covers up to w/k ending 24th (I think) as the Gallup Panel Sales (if I've the right multiplier) gives something like 160,000 sales. Which would have to be just 3 weeks of sales i.e. w/k endings 10th/17th/24th, as it couldn't possibly be 4 weeks. I await Gezza's figures, patiently.... Edited April 7, 201312 yr by davetaylor
April 7, 201312 yr The revised 1983 chart that I have (copied from a post by MFR at Haven back in January 2012) has 'Victims' at number 48. The revised 1983 chart I have is a top 105 and was obtained by MFR from Record Mirror in early 1984 - I'm guessing here but I think he might mean he sent off for the chart rather than it being published in the magazine. The top 21 is the same as the chart you have that has 'Victims' at number 98. Below number 21 there is mainly just singles moving around one or two places but there are some significant differences: My Oh My #30 (#65 in the chart you have) Let's Stay Together #46 (#68) Tell Her About It #72 (-) Thriller #77 (-) Marguerita Time #97 (-) Edited April 7, 201312 yr by Robbie

Though rather strange the Top 21 remained the same. Only You would surely have risen passed #9 in a week? Could be that the one with Victims at 98 is wrong? Edited April 7, 201312 yr by davetaylor

April 7, 201312 yr I agree that it looks strange that the top 21 has remained static. The top 100 that you have, with 'Victims' at number 98 must be the Music Week version though. I have a copy of that top 100 and saved it from a website (now sadly long gone and I've long forgotten its name) that posted all the official year end charts from 1970 to 1999. The website listed both the original year end charts as broadcast on Radio 1 / published in Record Mirror (back when there was an early to mid December cut off) along with a separate list of revised year end charts that later appeared in, I presume, Music Week. The website existed in the early 00s and vanished sometime around 2004 or 2005. This particular website was probably the source of the chart Gezza refers to in his above post (post #22). All the other revised charts from the 70s and 80s at that website seem correct so it's a puzzle where the 1983 chart comes from if it is an incorrect chart.
April 7, 201312 yr Author Great. So, it's almost certainly including the missed week. Though doesn't seem to include the w/k ending 7th Jan 84. I'll work around it & go for a full 52 week run & also incorporate it into the 80s chart & take out the MRIB sales, I put in. It seems to cover w/k ending 15th Jan 83 to w/k ending 31st Dec. So, we lose a week in January 83. I wonder why that is?

If the latter the sales week is 03/01/83 to 08/01/83, the first sales week of 1983.
