Dannii Minogue 'I Don't Wanna Take This Pain' - a bit unfortunate for her 5th single, after the first 4 all went Top 20.
The one I always remember is Agnes' 'I Need You Now'. Gutted it flopped. Please come back to the UK charts, Agnes!

I still listen to that now, was really shocked it wasn't bigger.

Someone mentioned something about hits that peaked at number 40 with two consecutive weeks there:

Blancmange - What's Your Problem? - (5 Weeks) 07/09/1985 -51-{40}-40-44-73

Elton John & John Lennon - I Saw Her Standing There - (4 Weeks) 21/03/1981 -47-{40}-40-58

Emotions - I Don't Want To Lose Your Love - (5 Weeks) 24/12/1977 -{40}-40-42-40-42 - Great chart run!

Gary Glitter - You Belong To Me - (5 Weeks) 13/03/1976 -47-41-{40}-40-48

Holly & The Ivys - Christmas On 45 - (4 Weeks) 19/12/1981 -66-{40}-40-40

Larry Cunningham & The Mighty Avons - Tribute To Jim Reeves - (11 Weeks) 12/12/1964 -46-43-44-43-{40}-40-49-48-x(3)-46-49-49

Lynsey De Paul - My Man And Me - (4 Weeks) 22/03/1975 -44-{40}-40-48

Marilyn - You Don't Love Me - (7 Weeks) 21/04/1984 -59-56-54-44-{40}-40-60

Nick Kamen - Tell Me - (5 Weeks) 28/05/1988 -52-47-{40}-40-56

Osmonds - Down By The Lazy River - (5 Weeks) 25/03/1972 -50-47-{40}-40-46

Roy Buchanan - Sweet Dreams - (3 Weeks) 31/03/1973 -50-{40}-40

Tina Turner - Help - (6 Weeks) 25/02/1984 -54-49-{40}-40-40-47

So, nothing really recent

Not sure if this one's been mentioned yet, but Chris De Burgh's Christmas classic A Spaceman Came Travelling only ever peaked at number 40, way back in 1986 I think. Had hoped it might've seen a return to the T40 after the download era but I'm still waiting!

I can't see the embedded Youtube clips at work - so apologies if either of these long-forgotten indie tracks have already been mentioned. Both #40s

Urusei Yatsura - Hello Tiger (February 1998)

Rather strangely, this was the third release off the 'Slain By Urusei Yatsura' album, yet it became their only top 40 hit in their short career...the previous two singles having reached the Top 75. I'm not sure if it was because there was a good reason to buy both cd singles released or if it started receiving daytime radio play, but there it was. Urusei Yatsura managed one further Top 75 single before their 'difficult' (read 'not very good') third album saw the end of the band two years later. Three quarters of the band are still together but under the name Projekt A-ko.

Northside - Take 5 (June 1991)

Although it had already spent two weeks in the Top 50, Northside lurched into the top 40 off the back of an unlikely Top of the Pops appearance. If I remember, it was the first time in years that the producers had not managed to secure enough studio performances from the bands inside the top 40, so they offered Northside the chance to play as they were at #41 at the time. The band had previously managed a top 40 hit with 'My Rising Star' at #32 which was rather more because that track itself was the follow up to 'Shall We Take a Trip' which had steadily become huge in the indie discos the previous summer. Northside never had another hit, but did reform briefly for a few shows about five years ago.

I was going to mention those as evidence that even if you're a legend covering a song by an even more legendary act, you might not get higher than 40.

Good point there, I'll try and mention the titles in my next embed. I think Urusei Yatsura might just have made it because it was early in the year and sales were a bit low.

In 1997, at least one act who'd emerged in the previous decade made her last T40 appearance at the bottom rung:

(Suzanne Vega 'No Cheap Thrill')

'Tell My Why' by Genesis (1993) was their last hit with Phil Collins too, but it's not that good.

Also peaking at 40 in 1993 - 'A To H And Back Again' by Sheep On Drugs. They'd had a minor chart hit with '15 Minutes Of Fame', which looks optimistic in retrospect.

Meanwhile, I'm compiling my list of favourite Number 39 hits...

I'd normally agree, but the first single off the second album, 'Strategic Hamlets' was released exactly a year earlier and it only limped into the mid 60s. I guess they must have grown in fanbase - just a shame they didn't ever match it.

And Hot 100 and UK chart are not comparable because the latter is sales only.. #40 in sales in the US might not even guarantee a Hot 100 entry in the first place. It's much easier to get #40 single in the sales chart than on hit chart.
