Overnight ratings: 10.2 million

Full week ratings will include recordings and iPlayer views, so we should expect a sizeable increase, probably close to about 15 million. And of course that's also excluding cinema viewings which I imagine were PACKED. :cheer:

It'll more likely be 13 million as iPlayer views aren't counted in the official ratings. They are only counted in the Live7+ (or whatever it's called) which isn't anything official, just an indicator.

The 2010 Christmas special had 12.19 million so when the full weeks come out, this could be the highest ratings for a special since then at the least, it could even beat the 13.31 that the 2007 special got! :o

Btw, it anyone missed it, here's the trailer for the Christmas special:

We didn't get shown the Christmas Special trailer in the cinema. :( Have since seen it though, and it's going to be AMAZING  (and if that woman who said 'Trenzalore' is the villain then that will be a BIG YES - we need another enemy like Dervla Kirwan).
It has been confirmed that ORLA BRADY (Mistresses, Fringe) will be in the Christmas Special playing "someone from the Doctor's past". Actually cannot WAIT for this, such a brilliant actress and to see her in Who will be AMAZING!

The Christmas special is titled 'The Time of the Doctor'.

Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.

Episode description sounds like "The Pandorica Opens" really. I guess and hope it'll be very different.
The cinema screenings made £1.8 million, a record grossing for alternative content in cinemas. It was also the third highest grossing screening at the weekend; behind 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' and 'Gravity'.

Just got round to watching this, and if any episode could make me excited for more Doctor Who, this was it. Hurt was brilliant, lovely to see Tennant back in the role and Smith was great as always. The Zygon part was a bit filler-y but I wasn't too bothered by that, because the main attraction for me was having all 13 Doctors 'in the episode' (my jaw dropped a little when Capaldi showed up), and the chemistry between the actors. I've been annoyed by this show a lot over the past year but that's really brought it back for me. I think they did the best they could, and I even love that the plot was quite haywire and all over the place, it was quite a production.

Definitely worth the exercise, and now I'm excited to see where it goes from here.

'The Time of the Doctor' is apparently airing at 5:30pm on Christmas day (still just a provisional date on the BBC's guide, though).
That seems rather early, hasn't it been at 7 or so the last few years? I guess they want to try and maximise the audience.
It was 5:15pm last year, and the overnight's suffered because of it. I'd have thought they would've learned from that mistake, but evidently not... (and last year's was probably the darkest Christmas special we've ever had, so for it to be the one airing earliest is a bit strange )
I wouldn't say the overnights matter at all really, the media will make a fuss over them but ultimately it's the final figure that will matter to the BBC.

Fair to say I cannot WAIT for this now! And Orla Brady is going to be AMAZING. <3

the reason it's on earlier on Xmas day is because it isn't the biggest show the bbc have anymore. They need their biggest shows on at primetime to at least try and beat itv.
It's airing at 7:30pm now. Quite a difference to the provisional time, but I'm glad it is as late as it is now. I want to be watching Doctor Who when I'm relaxed and ready to watch Matt Smith's era come to a FANTASTIC end, not when I'm just finished tea + still recovering + drinking.
