Posted June 17, 201312 yr Crazy for You ● (1985) ● 'Vision Quest (Original Soundtrack of the Warner Bros Motion Picture)' http://i40.tinypic.com/15vqwy.jpg Background The first single from the soundtrack of Harold Becker's film Vision Quest, 'Crazy for You' was written by John Bettis and Jon Lind after producers of the film, Jon Peters and Peter Guber, and music director, Phil Ramone, took interested in Madonna's voice once they were introduced to her previous material and tested out her vocals. 'Crazy for You' is based on a scene where the main characters dance at a night club and the song is sung over this scene. However, Bettis and Lind were unsure about Ramone's idea of Madonna singing the song, claiming "'Borderline' was out at that time and I said, 'Excuse me? This is for Madonna? Really? Can she sing a song like this?'". The proved disappointing, but the second was approved by those involved with the track and film. 'Crazy for You' was Madonna's first ballad, which was one of they key reasons why it was pushed to be released as a single: Madonna wanted to prove that she could sing different genres to 'Like a Virgin' or 'Material Girl' which had since become hits since the start of the songs production. However, Warner Bro bosses were opposed to this idea, claiming it would drag focus away from Madonna's then-upcoming album Like a Virgin. In fact, it was requested that Madonna's appearances on the Vision Quest soundtrack to be scrapped, however the producers of the film were very strongly against this idea and thus, 'Crazy for You' stayed and was released. Chart success for 'Crazy for You' was strong worldwide, becoming Madonna's second number one in the US, Canada and Australia - displacing her own 'Into the Groove/Angel' from number one in the latter country, a record setter - and the Top 5 in UK, New Zealand and Japan. It was such a success that in the UK, Vision Quest was re-titled Crazy for You, as well as being certified Gold by the BPI. It was critically acclaimed as well, praised for being "sophisticated" and "a serious ballad", something which "had been missing from her past recordings". 'Crazy for You' was nominated a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and was ranked #11 in Q Magazine's public vote for Top 20 Madonna singles in 2003. In 1991, 'Crazy for You' was re-released to promote The Immaculate Collection in the UK (latter followed by a re-release of first UK hit, 'Holiday') and matched its 1985 peak of #2 in the charts. Overall, 'Crazy for You' has sold over 670k in the UK, placing it 4th on Madonna's all-time list. It's been performed on both The Virgin Tour and the Re-invention Tour Opinion 'Crazy for You' is probably my favourite Madonna single from the 80s and certainly one of my all-time favourites from her. I love that occasional deep sound in her voice which can also be heard in other ballads such as 'Live to Tell' and 'Rain', plus there is a strong element of emotion which adds to the message of the song. Quite surprised she hasn't performed it on tour more than twice. I love the rawness of it on The Virgin Tour but vocally, the Re-invention Tour performance is much better as her voice is more mature and that definitely reflects the song. June 18, 201312 yr When I became a fan I never really like it (vibe will probably think wtf) what teen would really like a slow ballad like that ?, unless they are loved up I guess. I didn't really like the song till the RIT it was just perfect and slow and really fitted the mood, fans singing along and even Madonna saying thanks to her fans before hand was so cool!.
